285/70/17s do fit in spare spot (PICs)

I know I have seen this question floating around the forum about whether 285/70/17s fit in the spare location, and most of the answers have been yes. I changed out my stock spare for a Goodyear Duratrac and thought I would post some picks of the clearance around the tire in case anyone had doubts. It is close to my KDSS sway bar but I think there is enough room for it to clear the tire during its range of motion. If it does contact it during my next off road trip I will just have to get a rear bumper made.

At first it was too close for my taste to the sway bar.

I readjusted it after Discount initially installed it.

It did have to be right up to the hitch to fit but not super tight.

Now I just need a spare trail rim.

Added Shots of the back of truck. Hangs down a bit but not too bad, wish I would have taken some with stock for comparison.

Yup I got a 285-70-17 BFG Mud-Terrain up there.

I dig it. Looks badass under there. I will take a pic of my stock one at the same angle for comparison when I get a chance.

I have a 3 way hitch ball. It has two different places for the hitch pin to fit depending on which ball is selected. I had to lower the spare and push it all the way towards the sway bar so I could connect the 2" side of the 3 way ball mount. So these pics tell me it would no work with the larger spare tire.

295/65x18 fits also :boink: but like the 285 it hangs a bit low but :shrug:

I think Harper is going with 315's don't think that will fit though :lmao:

Going with 305/70/17's which are 33.9's but sticking with my 285/70/17 spare til I get a skinnier spare tire.
As I said before it would be best to use a skinny "pizza cutter" tire like a 255/80/17 KM2 that is still over 33" but over an inch skinnier so it tucks up in more.

What I really want is a good rear bumper with a tire carrier but since I lack the funds and skill to custom build one and no one makes one for sale. I am going to go this route for awhile. But Harper7s idea about a pizza cutter is a great idea. If I hit it a lot on the trail I will just mount it on my sliding tray inside or on the roof while hitting the trails.

Would a 255/80/17 work well as a 285/70/17 spare? Even though it's a bit taller? Or at least better than a 265/70/17?

I've had my 285 hanging like that on my truck for a long while now, and I've never done any damage to it while on the trail. I rarely hit it, and while a 255 might be a better fit, I think it would take some pretty hard hits and extremely sharp rocks to damage the tire in that configuration.

Agreed. Mine has been there for a while as well and I break other things instead.

You will be fine with KO2's in 285/70/17. Will hang a touch low, but it will fit.
