2nd gen multi-purpose build for daily driving, offroading, and overlanding

Got some washers installed on the top of my front shocks to space them down. This gave me back my full range of suspension travel, plus some! Couldn't have asked for an easier, cheaper solution!

 
Went and did some "testing" of the lift kit today! I'm going to need longer rear shocks, they are limiting my down travel pretty good. Figured that would be the case, but these will have to make due till I get paid again!



Front end does great though!

I feel the same way about the chrome. But rather then black out my bumpers yet I have been trying to sell them to local body shops. So I can afford some new high clearance bumpers. They seem to go for enough to almost get one from.

So I have been doing my best no to mess mine up in the mean time. Now all I need is a second gen to get in a wreck.

I actually bought a new chrome set for <$80. After 20 years, the original ones are slowly growing flaky rust. Need to clearcoat the insides and install them some time.

Sorry though. I'm sure someone's looking for clean chrome bumper corners.
 
nice trick with the washers on the shocks, good thing it had so many extra threads!

I think its better with the chrome gone... Haha
 
Took it to get aligned and I need to replace both lower ball joints and my idler arm before they can align it, guess they are severly worn out... Sick of spending $$$ on this thing, but that's part of a 20+ year old vehicle! :/ Sooo... to make me feel better, I went and played around a little...

Last in 13 i did my BJ's all 4 just because mine were toast. I got the duralast life timers..... and need to do them again. This Year I did the steering "soup to nuts" all moog. I will be getting moog BJ's when I do them again. If you are going through the efforts do it all. I slowly bought a few parts at a time then cut out a weekend to knock it all out. It does get pricey. This year when I did do my steering I also got the Energy Suspensions front and rear control arm kit and couldn't be happier. Just my two cents. I think I need a new steering dampener too my wheel was a little jerky on the last outting

:lmao: 20+ y/o truck things are going to break down.
Went thru the maintenance money spending myself... It's nice to get all that done for a while and focus cash to other mods.

It was a nice day out, so I buffed this god awful red toyota paint and gave her a good wash. Its never looked this good!

Seriously. Some build threads are, well, you know. Everybody likes different things, and sometimes they don't interest me at all. I didn't know what to expect at first (probably at the mention of dropping a Chevy motor in it...) but found it to be informative, fun, and easy to read. I am not interested in show and shine "trucks," nor do I think every rig needs to be a rockstomper. You use yours for what it offers. That is the point, am I right? You take that sucker off the road to grab eggs at the store! I have been known to do the same. :)
Keep up the frequent trips, spend time outdoors with your kids, and kick up some dust!

*and, I prefer the truck to sit either level, or a little lower in the rear, which is actually level, as the rear wheel well is meant to have less space than the front*

Thanks man! I appreciate the kind comments. You're exactly right, the truck is used for what it offers. I like to push it to the edge of it's abilities, but not beyond it's limits, and I'm also not scared of a few scratches. I'm sticking to only doing modifications that are necessary and worth it. Sure it would be super cool to have a SAS and a V8, but do I need that for what I do? Nope. Yes, I mentioned a Chevy motor, as I have a background with them, but that won't happen until this sad little 3.0 gives up the ghost, and even then I'll still have to evaluate if it's really worth the effort and $$$ or not.

I definitely plan to keep up the frequent trips and I plan to keep this truck on the road for a long time to come, and hopefully passing it on to one of my boys when that time comes. I can't wait for them to get a little older so they can truly enjoy overlanding and the outdoors with me.
 
Getting this thing ready for a trip to the local offroad park this weekend...

Doing new lower ball joints and new idler arm, so I can get it aligned.



Also installed new, longer rear shocks. (Procomp ES3000 series, 25" extended) Other users on here advised against ProComp shocks, but I just couldn't turn them down for the price, even if they are junk, I just needed something ASAP and CHEAP to get me back out in the dirt.





Also picked up some factory cupholders from the local salvage, as mine were broken! Got them for free, score!!!
