3.0 fails to start after mud bath

I know 2 things;
1- You guys will figure it out and get her running down the road.

2 - You will never do the mud thing again. This I know from experience. I ruined a 6 month old 2000 Tacoma doing the exact same thing. As much as what you are dealing with sucks, just know it ain't gonna cost what that one cost me. I haven't seen serious mud since.

That has to be it. We have fuel, air and spark. The only thing left is timing. And the timing would make sense on why we couldn't get it to start using the ether spray.

If this doesn't fix it, I'm going to blow up his motor :gun4:

The good yay came a few minutes before we filmed the motor running. We got it running and then I suggested that we get a video of it for you guys The "yay" was for an added affect after the fact.

Can't put this thread to bed quite yet.

Ok, so she is running. Starts right up and seems to idle just fine. Ignition timing is set and seems ok. Problem is she is backfiring like mad.

Possible problems?

TPS?
Clogged cat?
Other issue?

As always I am stumped. Pulled the TPS (whole throttle body) and "I think" I adjusted it correctly via the FSM. Makes the same backfire whether the TPS is plugged in or not, so I don't think that is it.

Not sure if mud can get in to a cat and clog it up, but is there a way to test that?

I've checked plugs and wires and she is firing on all cylinders.

Kind of stumped here. AGAIN!

We know the mechanical tining is good. It was set then double checked.

did you set timing with the pins jumped? sounds like timing is off or the dizzy is off a tooth or two

I guess you could call it mild. Drove it around town a bit. It seems to run fine minus the backfiring at idle or when I let off the gas.

just wanna cover the basics and make sure you checked timing with the pins jumped??
since you got the engine pretty wet when it was pretty hot, i would check the headers for cracks. what brand plugs are you using?

so i typed this before i saw the video. crack exhaust pipe somewhere is where i would start

crappy converter

my 95 did the exact same thing after i re did my Head gasket i checked and rechecked the timing to prob then i took my cat off problem solved id say its probably your converter you could always disconnect it at the the down pipe and see if the poping goes away. but my guess is the converter is crap

NEVER!!!! Buy Xact spark plug wires from Advanced Auto! I was chasing the issue. My plug wires kept coming apart at the metal piece that plugs on the spark plug. On whim I took them back (kudos to Advanced Auto for honoring the lifetime warranty) and exchanged them for a set of Denso wires. Put them in and started her up, problem solved.

I've never run anything but NGKs. I hear Densos work great too, but one of the first things my Toyota guy here told me when I first got the truck was to stay away from the parts stores house brands and keep it OEM, and I have.
