3.4l Conversion

Hey guys,

I'm lookin at buyin my first 4runner, and havin a hard time findin a 3rd gen with the 5 speed that isnt beat to all hell. am i better off just holdin off and hunting, or snagging a 2nd gen for cheaper and just doin the 3.4l swap?

I would go with a second gen and do the swap. It's just my opinion though. I would rather have a vehicle with less bs and less wiring in it. You can get a 2nd gen much cheaper too. Drive it till it dies then throw a 3.4 in it.

Yeah don't get specific with the search either. A simple "3.4 conversion" on Google will bring up a ton of write ups from whether to do it, to parts that you need to acquire. Also search "3.4 conversion theory" and take a look at the write up on the wiring. I've read that thing a couple of times just to familiarize myself with it for when I have to make the decision.

hold out for what you want. get the 3rd gen and dont worry about a swap. 2nd gen with a 3.4 swap has less wires than an actual 3rd gen?? how many wiring issues do you really hear with toyotas. hardly ever hear anything wrong with toyotas wiring unless its a rat or someone messing with it.

There aren't really too many wiring issues on vehicles if they're left alone. But I (and many others here) never leave things alone. Once you start having to tinker with things and go the wiring is when it starts to become a pain in the arse. I would rather have a 2nd gen than a 3rd. I prefer the older toyotas. Just my personal preference.

well you usually dont mess with the factory wiring for most mods. the older gen trucks are better like you said. but there isnt to much difference when it comes to 2nd and 3rd gen to not go with a 3rd. both have v6, rear coil spring set up, 4 doors. the 3rd gen has a better v6 and the coil over up front makes for a much nicer ride even lifted. much more aftermarket support for 3rd gen. depends on the trails your going on i guess. if i had to choose between a 2nd or 3rd. i would go 3rd anyday.

this thing is gonna have 2 main uses in the near future. number 1: i live in tucson but i have a ranger im building in nevada so im going to have to make the pull with it. not optimal i know, but its a one time pull, after that just a family car/play toy. i found a 2nd gen with a newish motor/tranny (65k) for 2k checkin it out tomorrow
