30,000 mile maintenance help!

I'm at the dealer now, i thought it was included in my 2 year free maintence. do i need it ? dealer quoted me $389. valvoline told me its a good deal if they changing all 3 gear boxes. dealer said they are only inspecting them.

I paid a little less than that with oil in all the right places (transfer case etc). Wasn't excited about it, but it is what it is~

The 2 yr "Toyota Care" is good up to 25K miles only...basically you get 2 free oil changes (at 10K and 20K) and a tire rotation every 5K...oh and they check your floormat to make sure it's snugly connected...

Here's what the 2012 Maint and Wty guide says should be done at 30K: ($389 sounds a little steep for this)

Check installation of driver’s floor mat
Inspect and adjust all fluid levels
Lubricate propeller shaft
Re-torque propeller shaft bolt
Replace cabin air filter
Replace engine air filter
Replace engine oil and oil filter 1
Rotate tires

Inspect the following:
__ Automatic transmission fluid
__ Ball joints and dust covers
__ Brake lines and hoses
__ Brake linings/drums and brake
pads/discs 4
__ Drive shaft boots (4WD)
__ Engine coolant 5
__ Exhaust pipes and mountings
__ Front differential oil (4WD)
__ Fuel lines and connections, fuel tank
band and fuel tank vapor vent system
hoses
__ Fuel tank cap gasket
__ Radiator and condenser
__ Rear differential oil
__ Steering gear box
__ Steering linkage and boots
__ Transfer case oil (4WD)

Additional Maintenance Items for Special Operating Conditions
Driving on dirt roads or dusty roads:
Replace transfer case oil (4WD)
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis and body
Driving while towing, using a car-top carrier, or heavy vehicle loading:
Replace front differential oil (4WD)
Replace rear differential oil
Replace transfer case oil (4WD)
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis and body

Hey OP, I went through the same thing a couple months back.

You can bring it down to under $200.

- Change your own cabin air filter, it's a piece of cake,l if I can dro it anyone can.
- Fuel flush can be remedy'd by using fuel cleaner every 10k miles.
- Tire rotation, I suggest going to a place like Firestone or similar, and buying lifetime rotation/balance package. Believe it or not, they use the same machine as dealer.

Agree with Danny. You can do all these. Plus you know you did it instead of some 18 y/o with a cell phone in one hand and an Ipod with Facewaste in the other.

I had them do all of these in that price (iirc it was 315 out the door).

I needed to get in there for the headlight tsb and the driveshaft TSB anyways- trying to start off on the right foot with this local dealer (didn't buy the truck there).

Sure, I could do it all myself, and sacrifice time at work or with the family...but I don't have enough time as it is.

I sat at the dealer and worked remotely and made enough to pay for the service and then some, so I came out ahead.

The do it your self items that we are referring to is changing the cabin air filter, takes exactly 45 seconds and they charge $40 for labor.
Yo make $45 a minut?

Adding fuel injection cleaner takes even less, about 20 seconds to open up the bottle and dump before refueling.

Just sayin :)
 
Never been to a dealer for service - ever BUT.

DIY:
Change oil - $30
Cabin Filter- I dunno, I breath regular air all day so I really don't need special air when I drive.
Check my fluids? I've never had them low on a Toyota BUT lefty loosey a nut and stick my pinky in - FREE
Change the fluids pretty easy (Tranny is a PIA)
The OP quoted price is rediculous.

I agree with all but this one. I live in an area where the insect population is kinda outrageous in the summer months. The filter keeps them from getting in the vehicle as easily. I usually run with the windows up. Eventually the filter is gonna get clogged if your using the blower all the time.

The tC didn't come with a filter, but had a place for one. Definitely installed it to keep the bugs out.

Even still. Change it yourself.

If the OP or any of us that go off roading, all the dirt does pile up and after a number of trips it starts to smell like a mechanic's shop inside the car. At least thats what I experienced.
 
My $.02

If some of you bought your vehicles with the lifetime warranty, it is a MUST to get all scheduled maintenance. However, all scheduled maintenance does not have to be performed with Toyota as long as you save your receipts. Once my 75,000 mile maintenance plan(bought through Jerry) is up, I plan on taking it to a local, reliable mechanic charging cheap hourly rates.

If I did not have the lifetime warranty, I'd just take it to the local, reliable mechanic rather than pay the amount originally posted. :cheers:
 
I just got coffee in my nose reading the 'reliable mechanic charging cheap hourly rates'

I've found some cheap stuff at Harbor Freight and Big Lots but no where else and no cheap labor at all.

I go to WallyWorld for one thing only - Our beloved 0-20w synthetic oil (5 qts. for $22.00) then on my way home I pass a Toyota dealer that I would only buy one thing from - oil filters. I ask "How many do I need to buy to get the best deal" it varies by who is working but, I usually have to buy 4-5 and I get them for $4.50 ea.
So, rough math 22/5= $4.40x 6.5=$28.60+$4.50=$33.10 so,
You're right plus tax, I'm probably closer to $35
The local place charges close to $70.00 for an oil change and it's bulk oil plus they don't rotate the tires.

I like doing my own because it gets me under the rig and I know I let my oil drain for about an hour so all the crap is getting out.

Also, when I rotate I use that opportunity to wash the insides of my wheels and get all the brake dust out and I wash the rotors etc.

What the others said is true and also there is no requirement by Toyota to have a fuel flush. That is just dealer BS for increased profit. The old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies here.
 
Well someone said, "ALL gas is the same" and I'm not even going there. That thread would go 31 pages. I'm 51 years old and have been a "Car Guy" since I was 4 yrs. old.
Owned Many many many amazing vehicles (what is not important) In every car/truck that I used cheap/crap gas in early on, I had trouble. Once I started making some $$ and could afford "Good Gas from Good Stations" ......
Funny have never had a problem ever again.
No water in the system, no flushes, no fuel injector cleaner or injector problems - nothing NaDa. What a coincidence!

My Wife who never used to listen to me....we had to get rid of her 4runner (Her favorite vehicle ever) Why? something wrong with the fuel delivery and after many dollars wasted changing out injectors and coil packs and whatever - we traded it.
Care to guess what kind of gas she used to buy? Cheap crap.
Not anymore.
 
Thanks all, got most of it done but the transfer case. Where can I get that fluid? Toyota says its just 75/90 but I've heard it's a special Toyota fluid. Any thoughts. Thanks!
 
I havn't changed mine yet but I did check it. Not needed IMO....Clean/Clear as new at 50k miles.

In the Owners Manual, Sec.6-1
Transfer 4x4
Oil capacity
Part-time 4WD models
1.1 qt. (1.0 L, 0.9 Imp. qt.)
Full-time 4WD models
1.5 qt. (1.4 L, 1.2 Imp. qt.)

Oil type* Toyota Genuine Transfer gear oil LF or
equivalent
Recommended oil viscosity SAE 75W

**Note: “Toyota Genuine Transfer Gear oil LF” is filled in your Toyota vehicle
at factory fill. Use Toyota approved “Toyota Genuine Transfer Gear oil
