35's, running boards, and 16 mpg FTW!

Yea the 35's are just for looks mostly. My Jeep Wrangler had 35's so thats always kinda been the size i judge everything by. I like being high above everyone else and knowing that i could use em' if i ever wanted/needed to. DFW just got 12" of snow last week(unheard of here) and this thing was phenominal in 4WD with the Toyo All Terrains. I mean, other cars were sliding off the road and im doing 60-70mph easily.:reddance:

Im not sure how a K&N would mess up the MAF, are they saying it lets in too much debris? I have a K&N on the SRT6 as well as every car ive owned. Its not the freest flowing but seems to clean the intake charge pretty well. Then again most my other cars are MAP not MAF. BTW im not sure if i made this clear but its the entire intake with tube and box, not just a drop in filter.

Nice job in the snow! :)

I figured they were referring to the over-oiling, but wanted to make sure. And like you, I'm used to MAP...not these dang MAF sensors.

Out of the box, the K&N should be fine. It's only when you clean it and oil it and you either over oil it so that it's dripping, or you put it back in the vehicle and drive too soon. They really need to set overnight at least, and then make sure you don't have any beads of extra oil anywhere before installing.

The 4runner looks nice.

I've used a K&N in my 4runner and haven't had any problems with the MAF, then again I don't over oil it and I clean the MAF every so often.

How do the intake tubes work?

Any Oiled air filter that is over oiled will screw up the MAF, I know of a few few 4runner that run K & N oiled for many miles without MAF issues, and many other vehicles will a lot of miles on them with no MAF problems, 99% of the time it is user error that messes up the MAF.

Be that as it may, but there are still problems with MAF fouling up. With so many people having problems, it has to be concluded it is largely due to the user friendliness of the product.

And this is only ONE of the many problems with k&n. Won't even go into what I found on my UOA.

ditch the k&n and get an amsoil, if you've researched as much as you've said you would see they are know to be troublesome in our vehicles.

k&n airtakes are known to be problems with 3rd gens? why is that i was just about to buy one of these..

I've read mixed reviews on the Toyos, so I'm still on the fence about them. Order yours online or local pickup?

Same here, I was looking at these before I found a pair of used BFG all terrains I can pick up. I'd really like to try them....or I'd really like to get the baja 4runner's general grabbers!

240m3srt, your Runner looks sick! I like my running boards for too many reasons to take them off and whenever I get the SS 7.2 I plan on leaving the boards on still.

Another K&N debate? I put my on at around 60 something thousand miles and am at 140k+ with no MAF issues other than having to clean it. And the K&N can't be blamed for the connector terminals that needed to be cleaned to bring the resistance back into spec. I do read instructions and am careful not to over oil or clean at too frequent of intervals so take it fwiw.

It's hit and miss on if a K&N is going to give you issues and most people don't have problems but when you re-oil don't get carried away.

What kind of tires are those? They look really good, I'm thinking of upgrading from 33" to 35".

The tires are Toyo All Terrains. I have been very happy with them. They are very quiet and handle any conditions ill ever drive in. I went on ebay to get an idea on the best price, and then asked discount tire co. to come as close as they could.

The k&n intake retails for $275 but i found it on ebay for $225 shipped. Ill keep an eye on the air filter and the MAF, worst case scenario i just replace the filter one day with an AEM or similar.

I've had the Toyo's on two different trucks and they suck! If you are looking for some mall-terrains the Hankook ATM's I have now are orders of magnitude better than the Toyo's.

I also ended up having the Dakota Digital speedo calibrator installed and all i can say is it was well worth the money. The vehicle shifts better, speedo and odometer are dead on to the mph, as tested against both GPS and the mile markers on the highway.

So, I love what you've done here, can you provide more info? I calculated my actual mileage is about 19mpg after thinking it was 16.

Can you explain what you did and provide links, etc? I really want to do this and you're the only one I've seen do it so far.

PLEASEEEE AHHHHHHHHHHHH lol thank you!

I believe this is what you bought: http://www.dakotadigital.com/index....tegory_id=287/home_id=59/mode=prod/prd126.htm

Some of you might remember i was debating between nerf bars and rock sliders. Well this delima sort of worked itself out. I had been told by everyone that factory running boards and 35's wont jive, not even close. Well thats simply not true, not for my setup anyways. A bit of trimming was needed on the front plastic caps but no biggie. Now many are probably wondering why, isnt this a step backwards? Well for me no. I dont do any serious wheeling. My parents, grandma(yes lol), and friends all complain about how hard it is to get into. And my buddy who welds for me wont shut up about how i need to paint the frame because its ugly. Well, problem solved. And for $0.

The vehicle shifts better, speedo and odometer are dead on to the mph, as tested against both GPS and the mile markers on the highway. Im getting 16.33 mpg's on 35's.:naughty: I have the t/b gasket mod and a smooth air tube. I hope to break 17 mpg with the arrival of my k&n intake.

Oh, and i installed a grille gaurd from WAAG. I had debated and researched this for about 6 mo. I could not be happier with my decision!

I know these arent cool off-roading pics, but at least you get the idea of how it looks now.

ps, notice on that last pic the muddy spray from the tires on the side of the truck. The running boards block all that. Yea i know, 4WD is meant to be muddy.:D

I believe this is what you bought: Universal Speedometer Signal Interface

That is the product i used, the SGI-5

When i needed help installing it i didnt find much help on the forums, so i paid the shop who did my lift. The thing i realized quickly is not every 3rd gen has the same wire colors based on yr, model, trans type, limited or non, etc. My tech actually hooked it up incorrectly the first time and had to redo it after spending a lot of his personal time searching on the forums. All the splicing was done up by the ecu which is in the passenger side dash above/behind the glove box. Its important to alter the signal in the right place, iirc the signal goes from the sensor to the speedometer then to the ecu...all i remember is it is ass-backwards from what i expected. The way he had it hooked up the first time made the tranny shift badly but no affect on the speedo. Oh btw there are two speed sensors you have to use the right one. If you have a shop that has done one of these before id recommend using them. They quoted me way too low and stuck to their guns, if they had charged me hourly id be broke right now for how much time they spent getting it figured out.

I don't care what anybody says, your rig looks great with the running boards!!!

Thanks a lot! I appreciate you saying so.
