3lte to 22R W56 Swap

First to say Im a 2wd hot rodder with no real sense of transfer case or jap autos so with that here I go. I have just bought a toyota surf with a 2lte motor auto for a project to do for my little bro, decided I dont want to mess about with the diesel 2lte and just going to put in the 22r with a W56 trans. Has anyone done this swap? if so my main concerns are that the transfer case is not going to carriage up to the tranny or be able to operate the 4x4. Will this tranny work in the surf? and attach to the tranfer case or will I need a different transfer case as well??

Most of the guys on this board are in the States, and sorry to say we don't know the diesels very well . Try toyotadiesel.com, I'm betting those guys have way more info than we do particular to the swap you're looking at.

Having said that, I'm skeptical that the transfer case from your diesel transmission will mate with a w56 without a custom adapter. Any particular reason you need to use that tcase instead of the one that matches the w56?

First, is it a 4wd or 2wd W56 trans? Obviously it needs to be a 4wd version.
The best thing would be to get the appropriate t-case that goes with that trans.
Keep in mind there are 5 versions of the 4wd W56, and some use a top shift t-case and some use a forward shift case. Additionally, the forward shift case from a G series trans won't mate to a W series trans.

As for swapping, you'll probably need to install new engine mounts for the 22R, and possibly need to relocate the crossmember the t-case mounts on.
You may also have to address exhaust and cooling issues, depending on I'd the 22Rs exhaust is on the same side as the deisel's, etc.
And of course there's the wiring to deal with to make everything work.

I believe I've read on the Aussie sites that the 2lte and the 22r share a tonne of common parts. Double check but I believe the mounts are the same. The bell housing from the 22r will swap over to the existing trans. And than it should bolt right in.

That being said I have a 2lte and love it. U just need to do a few relatively inexpensive mods and it runs like a champ.
