3rd gen 2wd tranny problem

I recently got my 2000 4 runner in November at around 109,000 miles From a used car lot. Last week my tranny blew out. It was out of nowhere! While I was getting it fixed the guy said the planatery gear set "Exploded". When he showed me the part there were chunks of it missing and the metal shavings all over. The guy said this always happens on this particular transmission. Is that true?? Or is that just bad luck or maybe it had something to do with the previous owner. Again this happened out of nowhere so it's not like I felt it going bad, other than that everything on the car is perfect. The timing belt was done at around 83000 miles and the guy at the tranny shop said the cats were done and whoever did the welding did an amazing job. That just leads me to think that the previous owner did take care of it but then again I could be wrong.

I haven't heard much at all like this

anyone else? I could be wrong but gearset exploding!? I can see wear on critical components over time and some complain of whining noises.

So let me get this straight, while your rnr is being serviced by a mechanic its tranny exploded? Test driving it? wound it up too much?

Man oh man...sorry to hear this.

No I was driving on my way to work and it just crapped out on me. I took a picture of the Part after the mechanic took the tranny apart. Not sure if exploding is a good choice of word that's just how he described it.

I'd say abuse from previous owner. You can check into IPD or Makco Transmissions for replacement parts. Planetary Gear Sets aren't cheap, you may wanna go with a recycled trans.
