3rd gen just leaked red fluid everywhere. won't drive

driving down the road and pushing the gas pedal is no longer making the car move forward. it's just revving.

i pull over and i'm leaking a lot of red fluid. i just had the truck towed to an auto shop and am waiting to hear what the deal is.

Chances it's just a hose that came undone? I couldn't pinpoint the leak and wasn't in a good roadside position to do so.

Could I have trashed the tranny? 2001 SR5 with about 180k miles on it. Didn't look pink milkshakey....just red.

ATF smells, not like fish or trash but weird chemical, rubber, plastic smell. My return lines had busted fortunately as I pulled into the garage but wouldn't do a thing accept rev. When those return lines break it could just be a hole smaller than a needle but spewing out a quart a minute when the system is pressurized. Went through quite a bit of ATF looking for it.

I wouldn't think you would have done to much damage to the transmission if it blew and you pulled right over. I've been wrong before though. Best of luck!

thanks for the reply. when I started it this morning, it smelled like gasoline. I thought maybe my catalytic converter was going. a couple of miles later, I have this problem. I guess they were related.
