Hi guys new to the forum here I hope im putting this in the right spot! Mods feel free to move if nessesary. Just replaced my third stolen catalitic converter in the past year.... Very frustrating but nothing can really be done if they want it bad enough. Im gonna start to try and make it tougher than unbolting to bolts and cutting, gonna try and use some SS aircraft cable to make it harder to take, will post pics here as I go.. Great site!

Do they cut it off or unbolt it? If they unbolt it use allen or torx head bolts, or just grind them off. Or use an oversize washer and bend it around the bolt head.

What I would do, weld razor blades all around the whole area.

Well I fabed A cage that wraps around the entire manifold, if they want it bad enought they will be able to cut it out but by then I would probably hear and have A shotgun on ones face... Will post pics soon.

Had mine stolen last night...at work. It sucks, but on our 2nd gens it's only about $160 parts/labor to have it replaced. Either way, i've been told they won't go for the aftermarket replacements b/c they have less platinum in them. Were all 3 of yours stolen from the same vehicle? Have you heard of the Catclamp? I'm looking into one.

Meth...not even once.

That sucks that you guys have to worry about this kind of thing!

If you have a 4runner...you have to worry about it...period. Chevys and Toyotas tend to be more vulnerable I'm told b/c of ground clearance and ease of access. Just a heads up Ian, it could happen. Believe me, I work in a very nice area and it happened to me...in broad daylight...in a secured lot.

BTW...what was your reference to meth?

My reference to meth was the only explanation for such widespread, bold theft that seems to be sweeping the country in the US, lol.

I've only ever heard of this happening in the US, never in Canada. Maybe it's too cold to lay on the ground stealing cats up here? I don't think my truck even has a cat from factory, I haven't looked though.

true. All in all it turned out to not be such a negative ordeal. I'm pretty sure my cat was clogged. The one it has now is hi-flow and there is a slight noticeable gain in performance. At least i know now it's less desirable since it's aftermarket :|

I don't believe the diesels have Cats. I know here in the US they didnt start requiring Cats on big rigs until 05?. My best suggestion to avoid cat theft is a skid plate. It blocks access and they will move on to an easier target.

Any recommendations on a manufacturer for a Cat-specific skid plate? Some of the ones I've seen are pretty expensive, double the price of having a cat replaced even. BTW...my cat only cost $160 parts/labor to have it installed. If there's a skid plate for less than that then sure, it would be worth it.

Well if you only drive on the road then no it may not be worth the added protection. Then again you can't drive your truck without a Cat so then you have to factor in down time and alternate means of transportation until your truck is fixed. BudBuilt and Skid row both have middle skid plates that either cover or partially cover the Cat for about $250 if I remember correctly.

They have been stealing them from commuter parking lots around here (train stations, park-n-ride, etc)

All you need is a good cordless sawsall and it's off in seconds. They can do this so fast no one even notices.

Glad that my 99 Yota has the BudBuilt skid plate protection to deter the thieves. They could always remove it too if they have enough time.
