3RZ Runners Only

I think it's time to start messing around with some hp gains!

Had no clue you were 3rz! Check into building your own turbo setup! I'm quite a ways along and it has surprised me how cost effective it can be. I'm looking to run between 5-7psi boost and at 7psi: 4200 rpm, 100hp gain! Huge jump and you don't have to make any modification to fuel map or ecu. The max safe operable range for stock fuel and ecu is 7psi IIRC.

I started with headers when my manifold cracked.

I actually have a mini header setup and high flow cat. But my muffler is getting bad and everything is rattling (partly due to cutting the exhaust over the axle). Thinking it might be worth just going through and doing all new larger diameter piping along with a new muffler and supported turn down over the rear axle.

I would like to run a turbo eventually but would probably go through and rebuild the motor before I started running to much boost. Need it to stay reliable for driving to and from college (5 hour drive).

I tried 3 times to bend over the axle with bigger pipe. Finally had to let a shop do it right. They welded two bent sections together. Still a pita to get through.

I waited for my muffler to rust out & then bought the JBA SS kit with a Magnaflow high flow cat. I like it but I like the sound of the Borla better. I should have saved my money for a few more months.

Owned many different gen 4runners as well as toyota trucks...toyota through and through for life!!

recently purchased 97 runner 4cyl 4wd from my best friend (4th yota I've bought from him lol)

But this one particular one I just bought has sparked the overly addicting habbit we all I'm sure know what I'm talking about....parts wrenching, modding...ect ect

I'm not the most knowledgeable about about vehicles but I like to think I know more than the average person and rather do all my research myself and fix it, or parts buying, so on because who doesn't like to learn especially about our 4runners....

Which brings me to this question sadly I guess I'm the so called noob or newb haha anyways I have spent months researching all the stuff I've bought for this 4runner(lift, wheels/tires, pre lift maintenence, upgrades...literally a giant pile and all are still in packages on my shop floor just waiting to be installed before winter I'm hoping!! I only need front and rear gears, just going with usa standard gear undecided between 4.56's and 4.88's but I will figure that out...what size diffs are in my damn truck (I know gear size) but when ordering a set of gears I read some have 8" some have 7.5" and this has been an on going confusion any help is much appreciated....going to give a build thread a shot on everything im going to be installing/ fabbing my own cuz why not!

Heh. Ya know I bought the same truck (at least color wise) from Everett WA in 2010.

I support your decision.

For gears you have an 8" in the rear and the 7.5" up front. As far as ratio goes I would go with the 4.56 unless you're running 35" or larger. I have a 4.3 in mine with 31" tires and it's too high on rpms when I get out on the freeway.

I still remember driving mine home. Great feeling. Have fun and make sure you check the exhaust manifold. It has a bad habit of cracking. The 3rz also kinda likes to burn exhaust cleaves if you don't catch the crack fast enough.

What's better for my situation in your opinion if you don't me asking... it will be a DD, we'll planning on driving it more than my other yotas...so just average around town miles and off roading but at least one weekend a month I have a almost 7 hour round trip I make to spend the weekend with my son...usually every other weekend when it's not my busiest time of the year with work....so basically a little more than average miles but not quite a highway all the time driver...

And the PO of the 4runner my good friend had a pacesetter header laying around and put it on before the usual 'mani crackin' hahaha anyways he's the most knowledgeable about anything toyota I've ever met...literally all he does it buy and sell and build em and makes alot of money from it..I think he only has a day job to keep his wife happy lol

Thanks for helping me out on diff sizes!

Edit: future tire size is lt255/55 17....came across an unreal deal on 5 brandnew bfg mt's I could pass up so Lt tires it is lol

I would say keep your stock gears for 255/55. Those are 31" tires.

You're going to burn through the pacesetter. It's junk (no offense, just not a solid header) Save for the LC or get the mini header which is a stock yota part.

Loss of power. It will feel like compression loss. Get your valves adjusted and you will find out how bad it is.

I've had many of them, I know they're junk, but in due time eventually lce will have extensive real estate under my hood!
