3RZ Runners Only

What's better for my situation in your opinion if you don't me asking... it will be a DD, we'll planning on driving it more than my other yotas...so just average around town miles and off roading but at least one weekend a month I have a almost 7 hour round trip I make to spend the weekend with my son...usually every other weekend when it's not my busiest time of the year with work....so basically a little more than average miles but not quite a highway all the time driver...

And the PO of the 4runner my good friend had a pacesetter header laying around and put it on before the usual 'mani crackin' hahaha anyways he's the most knowledgeable about anything toyota I've ever met...literally all he does it buy and sell and build em and makes alot of money from it..I think he only has a day job to keep his wife happy

Then why wouldn't you just ask your friend since he's the PO and he knows everything Toyota, he should know what size diffs you have and what gears would be good for your situation...

Yeah. Mini header off an 01-04 tacoma. I think some of the '00 3rz 4runners had it too

If I didn't have to completely redo my exhaust I would be willing to go to that because I'm in rust country.

So looking at muffler today, I found a small hole in it. With the 4runner running I could feel exhaust running out of it, so I guess that means it's time for a new one. A shop in town said if I go and buy the muffler they will install it for $70. I already have a Magnaflow high flow cat and mini headers, so what do you guys think would be a good option for a muffler to run along with those?

I was looking into a walker. I am very tired of the drone on the highway. Don't get me wrong I love the sound when I zip through the gears. The LCE, high flow cat, bigger pipe and the MagnaFlow sounds great then. I have a sound proofed cab and it still is too much. I guess if I wanted to get deeper into the sound I could go with a Borla turbo xs.

Anyone know the tightening sequence and torque specs for the 3rz exhaust manifolds? I have my mini header to put on but i dont know any of the torque specs for the collector/downtube nuts or the EGR nuts. The nuts on the head are 36 ft lbs last i heard

Oh man that's been a while. 36 sounds right from what instructions I got with my lc header. If you do opposite corners and then stitch the bolts in that should do for sequence though.

All these sweet turbo 3rz pics remind me of an issue I'm having and would like everyone's input. On most long trips after about 30 miles, there is an annoying whine coming from the front of my engine bay. It sounds kind of like a loud turbo charger...only problem is I don't have a turbo...not yet at least. It gets louder under load and also happens when in neutral.It's been happening for about 4 months now, no CEL and the truck runs fine.

Things I've ruled out:
-Power steering pump
-Alternator
-Idler Pulleys
-AC compressor

Things I suspect:
-Crank Pulley/bearing (I'm nervous messing with this because I'm afraid about re-torquing)
-Harmonic balancer (same thing here)
-Water Pump (doesn't leak or overheat)

I'd post a video of the sounds but it's hard to capture since it usually only happens when I'm driving and I need my phone to rock out.

Any ideas? Has anyone else had a similar issue? I have a 1996 with 200K.

I'd start with a fresh water pump, they're cheap, and if it doesn't fix it just chalk it up to preventative maintenance. The pulley itself shouldn't be making any noise, it's just a solid iron single piece pulley straight onto the crankshaft with a key holding it in place, and the bearing itself is inside of the motor so that would be a no-good situation.

By ruled out do you mean replaced or tested in some way? Can you catch it on video?

Ah ok, so once you get that water pump done up you'll be nearly out of things that are rotating, the only other things would be the Timing chain and it's associated guides, and the actual internals like the cams, crank etc. RockAuto has the genuine AISIN pumps for 45$ by the way.

I had a similar sounding squeal on my 08 highlander and it sounded like a belt. Ended up being the water pump....glad it was under warranty. Those awd setups are a pita. You had to go in from the passenger side wheel well to get at it and it was tight.

Quick update on my mystery squeal: I just replaced the water pump today and it seems to have resolved the issue! The pump I removed didn't have any obvious signs of failure, but it's been in there for 20 years so the bearings are probably worn out. The gasket was in pretty bad shape too.

That's Good news! Usually if it's gone away for a little while with the 3rz it goes away for good.
