3RZ Runners Only

I'm not sure with a supercharger you would need to go necessarily to 5.29 just because of the power increase from the engine. I definitely agree with 4.88 though. The 4.88 would give you better highway type driving. Our 5spd transmissions are torque sided for sure.

Personally I'm looking at kind of the same thing but I want to do a few upgrades in the head as well. Not anything super special but maybe as far as stage 2 just to give the NA some oomph before tossing the supercharger on there. I think the 4runner, no matter how you get there, feels a lot more like a vehicle at around 270-325hp just because of the weight involved. My wife's highlander is similar in weight and 276hp makes that thing scoot pretty good. It's not a drag car but it merges onto the highway without having to floor it and flog the gear shifter to get it there.

Krypto,
Thanks for the reply.
I already have 5.29's. Been in for 2 years. I love them, except for hwy speeds (70+), I am turning too many rpm's. Once I go to 35's it will be better and put me just a little over stock gearing. If I used the gear calculator correctly....
I don't expect it to ever be a 'speedster', I just want a little more power. Both offroad, and on the hwy. I think if I could get 200hp to the rear wheels I would be very happy. I don't know if that's doable without doing a bunch of engine mods tho...which is why I started this conversation.

What is a stage 2?

Thanks

Durwin

Stage 2 would be a ported head with dual springs for the valves and a more aggressive cam. Paired with a piggyback it's probably good for 20 hp to the wheels after basic tuning. That would probably put our motors to 200 or so with a decent exhaust flowing exhaust and intake. If you can get to 200+ NA then when you add a supercharger instead of getting to 200hp off the bat you end up with 260-275 or more after tuning. With a turbo setup it could be over 300 properly tuned. Of course part of choosing the parts for the head would include gearing it towards boost.

If you go this route add another 3k onto the supercharger.

Started removing things to replace my water pump and found the harmonic balancer separated from the rubber.
Good news is it's not the water pump, bad news is it's not the water pump. Lol

What Methods do you use to retorque the harmonic bolt to 220 ft lbs? My torque wrench only goes to 75 ft lbs. I was thinking breaker bar, a 2 ft pipe and me hanging off the end. Close enough? Or rent a big torque wrench?

Hey 3rz gang,

Quick question. Do any of you have that TRANSFER DYNAMIC DAMPER 33183-35050 hanging off your transfer case? My googling makes me think it was only originally on the V6's. Or perhaps because I am 96 it came later in the 3rd gen lineup?

I found a junk yard one to put on mine and I can't tell any difference with it on or off.

A 1/2 inch drive torque wrench with a scale of (20 to 250) is actually a pretty useful tool. If you start doing suspension, exhaust manifolds, drive shafts, wheel nuts, etc. you can use it. I use my little 3/8 one less.

Maybe if you can swing it try to find one on sale somewhere.

Kanoe, I have a 99 base model, and I used to have a damper. I removed it when I installed my dual case. I don't know that it did much.

Sorry, I'm not much help....

Good luck

Not at all, thanks for the info. This is not important in the least, just curious.

Perhaps it was a year thing, I don't think my 96 3rz 5spd came with one, maybe later years did.

I'll try it On and Off again this summer and see if I notice anything. It sure is an expensive part if you want it at the dealer.

My base model came without that damper thing. I found one and installed it. Not sure if it did anything or not either.

A little late to this topic but now i'm here, i have a '99 4Runner 3RZ with a 5 speed, mine has 171,000 miles and runs fantastic, it has 31" tires and 4.88 gears to compensate for the lack of power/weight ratio and it runs very nice and at 75 mph goes 3340 RPM which i think is not bad considering that my country has several highway hills and considering that the peak HP & TQ figures on the 3RZ start at 4000 RPM, i also have King shocks, TC UCA's and Detroit truetracs front and rear. It would be nice to have some more power, in fact i installed a nitrous kit some time ago and it does great but nitrous over here is pretty expensive to refill and when you're over-enthusiastic you can run off of it pretty quickly.

Here's without N2O:

Dual TrueTracs!? You're a man after my own heart! Tell us more about the install of the front TT.

Nice dune videos :)

what can i tell you, i decided on that option because it differentiates when you're in a corner but gives great forward traction as long as both wheels on the axle are touching ground, you can tell it's working because once in 4WD the steering gets notoriously heavier. I believe mine is part #911A342

Nice setup! I have thought about a TT for the front later on. Recently though I moved to an area where wheeling isn't nearly like SoCal was so I'm not even sure I really need it to be honest. I have the electric locker in the rear but I rarely use it. In snow a locker can help or hurt you depending on whether you're in powder or driving along a road so for now I like the select-ability of the rear with an open front. I'm glad someone did TT front and rear though. I always wondered how that would perform.....looks like it does pretty well getting up the dunes.

Thanks, i like how all the mods performs together very well and actually some people has a hard time believing that the truck is a 4 banger

Here you can see a slow speed rescue in sand and see that traction is pretty good:

Patricio, that's awesome. This is a great example of how limited slips can be really helpful in common offroad scenarios. It's not all rock crawling!

I had an interesting experience installing my front TT. I made a painfully detailed thread about it and would love to see if your experience matches up in any way.

That is awesome! Definitely a good solution if I ever saw one. I might consider it for the front again. Very impressive.

I don't think I've ever seen one on my 98.....curious. I will look into it now but I have slight vibrations at 80 plus so maybe I'm missing something lol.

I don't do any mechanical work on my truck, i have a mechanic friend that does all the fixing, mods and new parts installations and i remember that when he installed the front truetrac he mentioned that one axle didn't go all the way in and that he has to modify it, i remember telling him to do whatever he needs to do and it's been like 4 years already, not a single issue with it and works great.

Late to the party, but I'll throw my .02 in. Just picked up a bone stock 96, Imperial Jade, tan interior. 199k miles. 3rz, 5 speed, and it's 4wd. Exactly what I was looking for. Had all kinds of grand designs in my mind of big, heavy winch bumpers and 285s and a lift and a roof rack and and and...

Then I realized I didn't want a repeat of my 89 4Runner, which got all of the above mods and more. Which turned a virgin, really nice daily driver into a weekend warrior. And now my dedicated off road rig.

To wit, I'll be stuffing the biggest tire I can fit without rubbing too badly on my stock height 4Runner. And maybe an e-locker in the back for those times I'm someplace I shouldn't be. In the meantime, I'll be slowly cleaning it up, and replacing all those little things that need to be replaced or changed. Along with a lot of overdue maintenance. Pics to follow.

This post made me laugh a little. I am constantly fighting this internal battle with myself about staying stock enough to keep daily-ing my ride, which I love, and have really no legitimate complaints about. Or whether I should bite the bullet, get another daily and go crazy on Red. To this point in my life I have always daily driven my wheeler, and it keeps me from spending too much money or just plain breaking things and constantly upgrading,... but it might be nice...
