3vze timing

Just finished istalling the heads. I start the engine and it idles low then shuts off. I rotate the distributor to improve the idle. I take off the bolt that holds the distro in place and turn it clockwise ( advance) past the bolts hole and it idled fine. What am I missing?

When it's past the bolt hole and idling fine, check it with a timing light. Sounds to me that you stabbed the distributor one tooth off. So what you thought was correct was actually very re****ed. Haha it censored me when refering to timing. Your timing is currently very un-advanced.

First did you check the timing with the distibutor way advanced? Timing may not be the issue.

If the timing is correct when it is way advanced then it has to be pulled and stabbed again.

The distributor drive gear needs to go counter clock wise one tooth.
Pull the cap off and pay attention to the rotor when you pull it out. Turn the rotor 1 tooth CCW and stab it again, in fact mark it so you know you don.t stab it back in the same spot.

Distributor is very sensitive to even one tooth off, GonOvr has it right. Don't forget to use the marks on the dist. gear and body for initial alignment. Took me a while to figure that out.

Yeah I do align the marks on the duster gear shaft and housing but whe I insert it in it moves Ives to the left a bit. Crank is at 0 degrees cam gear at TDC

Ok so here's I got the timing down without a light unfortunately the truck starts and runs But it still overheating. Could it be the oil. 10w40. I did take the head to the shop and have it cleaned. In correct timing?
