Just bought a set of 4" Westin Driving lights to place in the lower front Grill of my 2010 SR5 and want to know if anybody knows why the directions say I have to splice in 1 wire into the parking light. Also the directions do not say which parking light wire so does anyone know which wire to connect to. What does the relay that came with the lights do and do I need it ? If not can I just connect the lights to a 2 pole switch? In other words a switch in between the hot lead wire from a power source and just take the black wire of the lights and ground the lights.

Oh boy. OK, I'll give it a try.
1. The wire to splice into the parking lights is so that you don't forget to turn the lights off. The lights will go off with the parking lights. Now you have to be careful where you splice into the parking lights. They flash when you lock the doors, so you want to splice in somewhere that does not turn on when the doors lock, but does turn on when the lights are on.
2. You need the relay since the lights probably draw more current than a switch can handle, and you don't want to run a wire from the battery all the way back to your dash. Look around on this forum and any other, a simple Google found this link that probably explains it better How To Wire Fog And Driving Lights Harness Wiring Diagram.

To add to what Ryan said, another reason that you splice into the parking light wire is so that the driving/fog lights will operate independent of the headlights (low/high beams). In other words, when you turn on your parking lights you'll be able to turn on the driving/fog lights - you won't need your head lights to be on.
Also, the driving/fog lights won't turn off automatically when you turn the high beams on (as is usually the case with OEM fog light operation).

You can ditch the relay and just wire from the battery to a switch and then to the lights. It wont hurt the provided switch since it is getting 12v from the battery anyways. Without the relay you can turn your lights on without any other vehicle light being on. The only con to this is you have to be more aware that your driving lights are off when the truck is off. otherwise youll drain your battery.

I would love to see a detailed install thread on how to do this. I can wire the lights to a switch, but I would like a write up on how to mount the lights behind the front mesh. What all I have to take off (front bumper?).

it's not the voltage that is the problem, it is the current. So… no you shouldn't ditch the relay, but do what you want. There is "works" and there is "correct".
Lights installed
Mouted my lights behind the grill without removing the bumper or grill. I used a Right angle drill and drilled and tapped into the bumper to screw in the lights. I'm away right now but in about a week and a half I'll be back and I will try to post the pictures

So did you...
1) Remove the grill insert and
2) Drill holes (Using Right Angle Drill) using the opening from the removed grill
3) Install the lights and wiring
4) Reinstall the grill?
I haven't looked but I am wondering if you could access the bumper from underneath for easier drilling...

I did not remove the Grill insert to drill the holes. Just removed the plastic shield up top between the radiator and the front grill (13 push in pins to remove)I just used a Craftsman Right angle cordless drill and it fit right in there. Installed my 4"Westin driving lights part # WES-09-0105 from streetsideauto.com did all the wiring and then replaced top plastic shield. If you take off the front skid plate that you have to remove to change the oil filter and the black plastic piece under the bumper I believe you can access the bumper.

You go to Post reply. Then manage attachments. Locate where the file is stored on your computer and upload them individually.
If the file sizes are large, upload them to picassa or something and post the link...

Here are the pictures I have. Westin lights mounted to the bumper behind the bottom grill. I used a aluminum spacer about 1" hg. under the lights to put them in the middle of the grill. Did not have to remove grill or remove bumper cover to install, just a right angle drill and then drill and hand tap into the aluminum bumper behind the bumper cover.
