By the way just my two cents. Stock should be stock. If you can't buy the rig without running boards then you shouldn't be able to take the running boards off. Same goes for any other mods. If it's not offered that way from the factory then it isn't stock.

3- Why not throw in some 1st and 2nd gens, if some can be found still stock and wheeling condition.

4- Thai, hope you don't mind me asking this, if you no longer have a 4Runner, why do you spend so much time on this site? Just curious?

i would do what some people seem incapable of doing and look at the entire picture before judging anyone on a few heated/emotional posts. I feel like this argument has become less about 5th Gen and 3rd Gen and more about a bunch of people vs. Thai.

therefore I decree that this thread shall return to what it was meant to be, a recruitment for a 4-R-U-N-N-E-R challenge between 3rd gen and (4th and 5th) gen 4runners.

This is a warning for all 5th genners that will compete in the Challenge...

The problem is that if you get a gash on the sidewall, there is not much that you can do about it...no plug is gonna help you. And with the electronics these days on cars, a tire that is not the same size as the other 3 may cause issues.

Actually, from where i am sitting, 3rd gen owners seem to have an axe to grind with the new top off-road dog in Toyota's lineup. Do you guys feel threatened? I know that when the 4th gen came out, you guys still feel like the top dog in off-roading...but the 5th gen is a clear threat and you guys are scared and a bit insecured, aren't we??? From where your sitting, you mean the other side, by no means in the middle. I would agree that 3rd gen owners may feel threated by the 5th gen as what i know as "projecting your insecurities on other people", but the thing is this thread completly dismisses that because 3rd gen owners would just talk trash and not back it up, but it would seem that there are many volunteers to compete against a '10 Trail edition.

what i said was that toyota was lazy on there designing in capabilities of the 2010 Trail edition, and they used these Driver Aids as a sort of quick fix to the lacking of capabilities it had prior.

point is and bottom line the 3rd gen is proven to be a great off roading vehicle and the new kid on the block has to step up, the 5th gen doesn't automatically get crowed king, you gotta earn that shit, and it takes years

as of right now it's so new there's not any major flaws, like the 3rd gen diff seals and such, every single car,truck,scooter,mini van , as problems like these and it takes years to find them, so who knows if all of these tech systems in the 5th gen are burly enough to last instead of some stupid plastic gimmick to entice newbs.

But, the technology is already proven...none of the 5th gen's technology is earth shattering. Need i repeat myself here? Is a rear locker a new tech? Is A-TRAC a new tech? Just those two alone should make the 5th gen quite capable, don't ya think?! You need to go over to the FJ Cruiser forum and read up...you may find yourself eating those ignorant words of yours. :flipoff: KDSS has been lauded by Peterson's, Off-road, 4-wheeler, etc...so, it is proven.

Now, you are adding these technologies to a proven platform (4th gen). Along the way, Toyota made some structural enhancements to the 4th gen and made minor tweaks to the suspension...and voila, a 5th gen. You have the same IFS and rear axle configuration and this dates back to the 3rd gen. (yes, i know that the 2nd gen also had this, but Toyota made significant changes in suspension design/geometry with the 3rd gen.) The difference here is that the rear axle has been beefed up appropriately for the increased weight and power. (I always thought that the 4th gen's differentials were a bit meager for the vehicle...personal observation that's all.)

Summary: a modified and strengthed 4th gen + rear locker (with stronger gearing) + A-TRAC + KDSS = 2010 4runner Trail. The 2010 4runner is not a total head-to-toe redesign. I would even bet that there were more changes to the 3rd gen from the 2nd gen than what Toyota has done with the 5th gen coming from the 4th gen.

So, again, why would you guys think that, all of a sudden, the 5th gen will fall on its face off-road or that its reliability will crumple to Land Rover levels???? Take a step back...and think about it. A blind man can see what i am talking about!

3rd Gen owners have every right to be proud of their ride, but unless you also own and have driven a 5th Gen in the same way you drive your 3rd Gen, your opinion is based on nothing more than speculation because YOU DON'T KNOW what the 5th Gen can and can't do based on actual experience. Stating that a 3rd Gen is "better" based on experience driving a 3rd Gen is just as stupid as claiming the 5th Gen is better without actually driving one.

This entire thread was created in reaction to a post based on a side-by-side picture and speculation not based on anything resembling real experience driving a 5th Gen and it went downhill from there. Complaining about the other guy doing the same thing just makes you a hypocrite, a point I tried to illustrate by claiming my 5th Gen would knock the snot out of any stock 3rd Gen. Clearly, most of you just want to argue with each other. If you want to talk trash, fine... I'm not really interested.

But if you want 5th Gen owners to show up and actually do runs with you, quit acting like opinionated assh0les or encouraging your cohorts to do so. It's one thing to be competitive, it's quite another to act like an ignorant hick.
