4 snowboards & 5 people without roof rack mount?

If you have a 7 seater she could have one person sit in the 3rd row, fold down the second row seat behind the driver's side flat having a 2-2-1 seating configuration. I've done this with surfboards but not snowboards. But in the end without a third row I don't see it happening with boards inside and all of the windows shut.

why not just rent some boards at the ski resort?

They will be fine on top, very little salt and no rocks get that high. I run mine all season with multiple boards and it's no issue. Just wipe them down afterwards and they be good as new.
The racks for my snowboards use the stock crossbars and involve 4 ratchets. Take ~5 min to install or remove. Just borrow a rack from either her or your friends. Someone will have them. Here in Portland you can even rent them cheap.
If she does put them in the back in an "x" make sure that they are in cases or your truck is going to be very scratched. I sometimes put mine back there but I am ok with the back getting banged up.

Hahaha, if they're not decapitated, sitting between an X pattern metal-edged device packed in clown-car style on potentially icy roads with possibly apres-ski impaired drivers (not the 4Runner driver, the other idiots out there) on winding mountain roads is the set-up for a perfect crime decapitation!!
On a serious note, in my Exploder days when we'd have a 5-pack of snowboarders, we would throw all the gear in the cargo area, then load the backseat passengers in and then slide our boards along the sides from the cargo area up to just aft of the front seats. Usually didn't have to mess with the bindings, but sometimes... Sure it blocked the windows and a fast egress from the vehicle, but it prevented the awkward loading/riding with your jugular uncomfortably close to a cold, sharp metal edge... Just another option of the many entertaining ones presented thus far.
Best option is still the roof with a little ingenuity. In my ultra-thrifty high school days we'd ratchet our surfboards down to the scalding roof of my buddy's Oldsmobile and drive up 95 to Sebastian to chase swell. We'd collect the odd dent or two, nothing a little Sun-Cure wouldn't fix in a hot minute. Boards can get wiped down and tuned in a heartbeat too. I'd personally go for comfort and keeping my head than worry about dings on the board, but to each his own! Either way, I'm jealous cuz I've got exactly zero time in the snow this season!

Wait, are they taking luggage as well or just the boards? I suppose an "X" style configuration could work. Though I would hope those boards are wrapped in something because those metal edges will love to carve up the soft interior plastic.

I just find it funny were talking about how to keep snowboards that are designed to be out in the elements out of the elements. :doh:

People "borrowing" my 4Runner.....thanks, but no.... I have little faith in sis's friends respecting your vehicle like she will, however I can perfectly picture the nice sharp board edges f'ing up anything they come into contact with. That said, they will fit, someone will just have to be uncomfortable.

The faster the back of my runner gets messed up the more likely I'll be to start cutting into things back there...:thumb:
I put skis down the middle all the time, the dog hates it.
Long overdue I just wanted to close this thread by saying it WAS possible to fit 4 snowboards and 5 people with luggage all in the back quite comfortably! Didn't even have to use the roof rack. Might be cause we're Asian and all Asians are short... right? :noidea:

I have a snowboard, even though I only ski now, and agree, it doesn't fit like that. Awesome to see it done though!
