4L engine swap

I was browsing around a site that ive bought trashed insurance claim-cars from and came across an 08 tacoma w/ automatic but none the less its got a 4L with vvti.

Does anybody know if the stock engine block will bolt up to the 5vz 4x4 manual tranny?

id have to get a new computer, but if I got the whole truck, i could gut the engine harness and retire my 260k engine to my drift car and make it turbo.


I took a T50 tranny from an older 86 corolla "ae86" and put a 92 paseo 5efe engine on it... however, it did take some wallowing out on 2 of the holes, and I had to weld brackets on the bell housing for the starter, but none the less, very close to the right holes.... thankfull the top 2 "head" bolts fit PERFECT and kept it perfectly aligned.




anybody done the 4l swap?

Let me get this straight, you want to put a 4.0 V6 in 3rd gen 4Runner? I really don't think that has been tried yet. I think that might take a lot of changes, if you can do it at all.

I hope someone can chime in, but if not please report here with your progress. If you decide to do this, I will make your thread a sticky in the 3rd gen. forum. Good luck.
 
well... atleast its a FR "front engine, rear wheel drive" engine.

I figure... if I can put a FF "front engine, front wheel drive" engine in a FR car, im sure I can manage somehow..

Here is a current project ive got: Took the newly turbocharged engine from my 92 paseo that my buddy totaled "just 800 miles into the new turbo setup" and put it in my 81 starlet.

5.7L? IMO- im pretty sure it wont bolt up to the stock tranny.. and they dont have a manual for it.. im looking for simplicity.

and doesnt the v8 weigh quite a bit more than a wittle ol v6?

Haha what I meant was put a bigger engine in than the 3.4L. The new 4.0L V6 would be great, a V8 sounds like quite a bit of work..

Yeah, putting in a 4.0 V6 is monster enough. I know when you put in a bigger engine the supension gets all messed up, but I wonder if the 4.0 weighs any more than the 3.4 V6? My guess is, it might be around the same weight. It would also be interesting to see if the eninge matches the 3rd gen. transmission.

I am impressed you put a front wheel drive engine in the rear wheel drive Starlet. Were you able to shut the hood on the Starlet and are you still friends with the guy who wrecked your Paseo?

If the 3rd gen transmission can match up to the 4th gen engine, that would be cool, cause that would mean it may be possible to put the 3rd gen manual tranny into the 4th gen 4Runner. However, I'm not too hopeful of it being able to be done. :(

Lol, yeah, i was kinda in over my head with the thought of the FF in the FR, but I figured id give it a try, and sure enough, it fit without having to make a tranny adapter.

And yeah, he has been a close friend for over 10 yrs, however I did get a 2500$ settlement and I got to keep the car. Seeing as that I only put about 300$ of work into it, and I originally bought it for 700$.

Im glad to say I came out on top. :party:

gonna see if I can goto the toyota dealership and see if they have a toasted 4L sitting around, and ill just bring a bell housing from my car... shit, thats alot of work.

Might just stick with SC my stock engine... although what fun is that?
 
Well I think if they can get the 4.7L V8 to bolt into a 3rd I think the 4.0L would fit fine. I like the idea of 240hp V6 compared to a 183hp V6.

Doesn't the '03-'04 V6 use the same trans as the 3rd gen? I am pretty sure it does...
 
I think the trannies are different if i remember correctly. More power to you if you can pull it off. You would be the FIRST to ever do it from my findings.

Me, i'm all for a lexus V8 swap! A guy over over ar ttora has one being finished up. When my engine ever gives out, this is probably what will be replacing it...

If you do a gasser engine swap you might as well go all out, Small block 350, and you basically go from there.

Plus I wouldn't put any domestic engine in my Japanese truck, I like Toyota parts and reliability, not Chevrolet. It would cool to thing anyone who looks underneath the hood would see a Toyota badge and wouldn't even think twice that it's a swap.

I barely even like aftermarket... I like OEM look, hence the 17" tundra rims :D
