4L engine swap

From what I understand you want a 1grfe motor right? hopefully this will give you some idea as to what it needs. granted its supercharged and stuff but hopefully it'll point you in the right direction.Engine swap complete, w/ pics and vid!!! - XR-Underground now remember a new 1gr is VERY expensive so a used one might be good for your purposes. is there going to be any power adders or are you going to leave it stock?

If you were gonna do a swap for fuel economy purposes why not throw a twin turbo diesel in it?

I should have elaborated more. The hypothetical swap wouldn't be done for fuel economy purposes. The 4th gen engine doesn't offer that much more fuel economy than the 3rd. I was referring the the fuel economy of a V6 over a small block V8.

I like the toyota engine and if I did do a swap, it would be a stock 4th gen engine. Not a domestic engine.

Geesh, I figured of all places, I wouldn't have to explain my fondness for the Toyota kool-aid here.

But back to the original topic, is it even possible? Will it mate up to the stock 3rd Gen tranny?

Here you guys are contemplating that a 4.0 v6 swapped in place for the 3.4l currently in there, If you add up the costs of the swap you realize that the mariginal benefits of this are slim compared to the costs, as the engine i will value at an average of $2k, and seeing as you guys made a thread about a swap i can assume that you have little to no expierence in engine swapping. So you would attempt the swap yourself or pay someone to do that work, which would be a couple grand in labour to do, or many many hours of your own time, and that would the $2k for the motor plus the cost of labour (whether it be your time or a mechanics) and for what an extra 50hp and 40 torque?

For cheaper than that you can get your hands on a TRD supercharger to get more power out of your current engine, and still be able to easily service it yourself.

Unless the engine is in the vehicle is dead, then a swap like this shouldnt be considered.

Even doing the V8 swap, you would really have to want that motor and be willing to pay or have the knowledge already, and i can't see you needing more than 260hp offered with the S/C, in a 4x4 offroader of this size.

And for that reasoning i offered the opinion to say that if your going to do a swap that would require adapters and all you might as well make it a good swap and put a 350 in it, or a torquey diesel and even at that rate its still questionable whether its worth it.

I totally understand where you're coming from but I don't think you understand where many of us are coming from. I'm not considering doing this with life left on my 3.4. It seems that you are assuming that I would do this purely as a performance mod.

The original poster, actually does have quite a bit of experience swapping engines, though.

My interest in this is purely hypothetical at this point. In another 60k miles, it would be something I might consider, if it is possible. I easily put on about 15K+ miles in a year on my DD.

I wouldn't rate my mechanic skills that high, but I can figure things out in the end. I figure in 3-4 years I'll have a car as my DD, and my T4R will be a weekend/recreation/work vehicle. So even if I did pay someone to do it, I'd be in for about $4k with a new-ish engine in my beautiful 3rd gen body. Not a bad proposition if you ask me. I want to keep this 3rd gen on the road for as long as possible.

The 5VZ is a better engine IMO.

Agreed. You read up on Tacoma world and the 4.0 has its issues. I did a lot of research when I bought my 09' Frontier (which I traded in on my current runner) and its definately not the same Toyota quality as in years past. Not saying its not a good engine, but its not great.

It definately has more power, but I would rather have my 3.4.

Not worth the headache and cost of the swap IMO.

If you need more power find a low mileage 3.4, supercharge it, toss on some headers and your good to go.

There is an interesting thread on clubfrontier regarding a Titan 5.6 swap in a Frontier. It essentially bolts right in as the same gen Pathfinder is available from the factory with the 5.6. However, the guy ran into so many issues that its still not running right and its been well over a year since the swap. If you are really bored read this - http://www.clubfrontier.org/forums/f103/andy4106-build-53054/
