4Runner limited or Tundra Platinum

So, if you could have either a new '17 4Runner limited or '18 Tundra platinum, which would you choose? No kids, no real need for a truck, but they are utilitarian. There is about a $7k sticker price difference, but the Tundra has a rebate and more markup, so the difference between the two isn't staggering. I realize the 4Runner is built in Japan, whereas the Tundra is built in Texas. Does that matter? Any input is greatly appreciated...yes, I realize this is a 4Runner forum, but if any of you were getting ready to purchase a new vehicle and these were your two options, which would you go with? Thanks!

Don't forget about the difference in filling up at the pump. 23 gallons vs 38 gallons. If you don't have a need for such a big truck I wouldn't get it. Plus, don't quote me, I believe that the 4Runner has a better resale value.
 
What do you want to do with it?

A Tundra is much nicer to drive on the highway. Bigger. More power. Quiet. Etc. Tows well.

The 4runner is easier to live with in the city for parking. 4runner is better offroad.

Normally the comparison is Tundra vs LC200 or 4Runner vs Tacoma.
 
There's nothing utilitarian about a platinum trim Tundra! Depends where I'm driving and parking them. 4Runner's aren't small anymore but Tundra's are quite a bit larger.

To be honest, if I were you and couldn't choose between the Tundra and the 4Runner, I'd buy a Tacoma.
 
How would you use it? Do you need to haul a ton of crap that would be messy/oddly shaped? Do you need a V8? Are you going to tow? Go with the Tundra. Do you intend to daily drive it, haul people around? Get a 4runner.
 
If you don't know if you should get a an SUV or a full-size pickup then you don't need a full-size pickup. You'd know it if you did. You'd be picking up large loads of stuff or trying to tow a large boat or RV or heavy equipment or something.
 
Money aside - which is more appealing to you?

Now factor in the money - I'm going to guess maintenance will be similarly priced so could be a wash.
MPG? - I have no idea but I'd lean towards the 4runner if that's not a wash too

As many have asked - what's your intended use of the vehicle?

If you cannot make this determination objectively then forget about everything else including what others would do..Drive them both and then buy the one that makes your boat float..
 
Thanks everyone for the replies. Either vehicle would be my daily driver. I am an engineer, so I don't really need a truck for commercial use, but it is handy every now and then for the occasional trip to lowe's. Of course, it has way more power but at 46, I really don't have a heavy foot anymore anyway. I have driven both and really like both. The Tundra has more of the fun factor simply because of the 5.7 and 4:30 gears. The 4Runner was always my favorite vehicle in my 20's and 30's, and has the legendary build quality and is more nimble when parking. I really do plan on keeping either one for quite some time. decisions...decisions.

If you are only going to use a truck for an occasional trip to Lowe's, get the 4Runner and buy an aluminum trailer.

I got my trailer out today to pick up a new set of C4Fab sliders. Don't use the trailer a lot, but it is handy and much cheaper over the long run, as I have had it for 10 years now and keep it when getting different vehicles.

Sounds like you should get the Tundra. Get what makes you happy.
 
I have a truck and a runner. Depends on what you want/need. If you are a fast freeway driver the runner falls flat on it's face at 75+ mph. Gets decent mileage on the highway. If you drive the speed limits the runner has plenty of power. If you tow or go in the mountains, the runner may fall short.
The truck on the other hand may have plenty of power for everything but sucks gas like no tomorrow. As stated it's also a little tougher to park. I like both but if you can only have one, think about what you really want to do with it.

Also how big an old boy are you? Some people complain about headroom with a runner + sunroof. I really like my LE but sometimes a guy still wants a truck. Good luck with your decision.
 
Here are my thoughts, My brother has a 2016 Tundra, my cousin has a 2016 Tacoma and I just purchased 2018 4runner ( had a 2008 4runner with V8). I had my brothers Tundra for a few days and man I love the sound and the power but I really got tired filling that crap up. Its terrible on gas!! I have no need for a pickup and 4runner was just perfect for me, inside is bigger then Tacoma has more power then Tacoma and is shorter then the both of them. I would highly suggest the 4runner it's an all around perfect suv!
 
It looks like you're in New York. If I was driving in snow a lot I'd go with the full time 4wd system that's in the 4Runner Limited, GX460, and Land Cruiser any day over a part-time system in a pickup.

I was wondering what you mean by falls flat on its face at 75? Passing power? I have taken a couple long road trips and didn't notice anything bad about the drive, just curious what you have experienced.

The Tundra has power to spare passing at 75+ on the highway, it's a huge difference from the 4R
