4runner looks totaled. Thinking of selling as whole.

Hey guys, looks like it might be the end of the road for me. I hydroplaned my 4runner into a solid pole yesterday. Looks like the axle and CV is shot. Airbags deployed. In your guys' opinion, does it seem like this 4runner is totaled and not worth the cost to repair? I'm thinking of selling the entire vehicle as is. How much should I expect to get? Also, if anyone is interested in purchasing, please send PM. I'm located in San Diego, California. I hope this bit of advertisement is okay by forum rules. Please let me know if not.

More about the vehicle: Appears to be no engine or radiator damage. Front driver's side is somewhat crushed in, so you can see the overflow container moved. Prior to accident, steering rack was just replaced due to leak. New rear springs and bumper courtesy of the 20A recall . New wires to fix misfiring issue. Also worth mentioning, new IAC valve, LBJs, resealed T-case, new valve cover gasket, new catlytic coverter and muffler. Total mileage ~150,000. 4runner turns on good, and can travel short distances to move onto tow beds.

Looks like it missed the frame rail. If that's the case that's a repairable hit. See what insurance says about the bags going off.

I just had liability only insurance on the vehicle. Figured it wasn't worth it to get comprehensive coverage. In retrospect, I regret this decision.

I've seen Far worse than that, looks pretty cosmetic to me. It'll fix but since the values are so low now, its very easy to exceed 75% of value so yes insurance will 'total' it but that doesn't mean it not work repairing to some one. Luck. :cowboy:

I'm not skilled enough to do the mechanical work. I'd probably have to outsource all work to shops, and end up paying more than what I'd like out of pocket. But I'm still considering all my options.

Any idea how much money I can expect to sell for as is?

I'd say no more than 2500. Don't know what the market is like out there. I can tell you where I am you'd see less than a grand if it doesn't drive.

Yea it looks bad but once u take off some stuff to check it out you're probably not in that bad of shape.

Don't know what they go for in your area but to give you an idea I got mine running and driving in fair shape for 600 bucks. Just to let you know I will buy both pass. Side blinkers/running lights if you wanna make some money back I'd part it then scrap what's left if you don't wanna fix. Shops charge way to much imo

Biggest expense is most likely replacing the airbags and everything they destroy when deploying. Most insurance will total an older vehicle based solely on airbag deployment.


If you've got good salvage yards around, you may be able to find enough replacement parts to fix it.

Possibly. I think the Cali market is pretty strong. You see a lot of rigs going for way more there than anywhere else. He may have to sit on it for awhile though.

OP, if it was me in your shoes, I'd put 1500 on it and see what happens. It's probably worth that in scrap and parts.

Yeah they are pricey here in California.

You are right about getting the body work done, it's ridiculously expensive. Just replacing a plastic rear bumper on a Corolla was over $500 for me. That's with no frame damage.

I don't think it's worth your time to pay for repairs.

I would say thats fixable , this is mine after an accident that the previous owner got into, and i bought it knowing that.

Lol you guys are great. If I was mechanically incline, I do wish I can keep it and fix it up. I'll consider calling a shop and seeing how much it would take to get it back to normal, with working airbags of course.

If I do decide to sell it, would a number between $1000-1500 be fair and reasonable?

I'd fix it. Even if you have NO idea what you're doing, you can at least strip off the fender and the bumper and see how it's looking. If you're like me (I had a '91 Toyota Pickup that I got into a wreck with). The biggest thing you're facing is that the airbags deployed.

No the airbags did not deploy , there was no direct impact, mostly cosmetic damage, and the obvious that you can see in the pictures , lights, mirrors etc..
Like said before the most exoansive will be the airbags from what it looks like to me, this is where you gotta really think , has this been a good truck before the accident ? And base your decision on that.

You could ask a bit higher. People will always low-ball you so you go a bit higher knowing that.
