When will the next redesign for the 4Runner be? I currently own a '12 Grand Cherokee that I plan on getting rid of once the warranty is up due to a number of problems I have had with the vehicle. I have had it to the dealership 8 times for 2 separate issues. I am undecided on if I like the looks of this current 4Runner. There are days I like it and other days I don't. Sorry if this is not the proper place to post this thread. Any info is appreciated.

Like most Japanese manufacturers, Toyota is on a 5~6 year redesign cycle for major redesigns. That would put the 6th gen 4Runner around 2015/2016.
Several minor upgrades are expected along the way on the current model year.
The design is all about personal preference. I'm fond of the design, but there is more to a vehicle than just looks (although important). You may want to rent one (if you can find one) and spend a couple days with the truck so see how you like it in daily usage.
Do keep in mind it's a body-on-frame truck, so it will definitely handle different from your JGC with the fancy air suspension.

I like my Grand Cherokee but am concerned about problems occurring once the warranty is up since I have had major issues within the first year I owned the vehicle. My model doesn't have the air suspension and I'm glad it doesn't. The bells and whistles on the Jeep are nice but I want something reliable. I really liked the 4th generation and if Toyota had not redesigned the vehicle there would have been no question that I would have purchased a 4Runner instead of the Jeep. Thanks for the info.

Come on Danny.. you know this... We already saw the head unit switch to being Entune and there may be other things, I just don't know them off the top of my head. Other minor things I'm sure will come along.

More a Ghost in the Shell kinda-guy here, but I enjoyed the Cowboy Bebop episodes. and no special insight here... I just fill out the Toyota surveys.. they dont tell me anything though :car: For all I know the next version will look like a Tachikoma!

I was just the opposite. I have a 97 that my 17 year old daughter now drives. I held out to see what Toyota was going to do with the 4Runner. The 4th Gen had no more cargo area than my 97 and finally the 5th Gen is bigger and was exactly the size I was looking for.
I have two friends of mine who bought the JGC and so far are pleased with them. They are comfortable for sure and are more car like.
I like my JGC. I'm just tired of the problems. I had a misfire in one of the cylinders. Dealer flashed the CPU first trip. That didn't work so they replaced the cylinder head. Picked it up and it ran worse than before. Took it back the next day and the new cylinder head was bad so they ordered the part and I had to take it back again to get fixed.
I also had a knocking sound in the front end. Dealer said it was sway bar bushings but had to replace entire sway bar so they ordered the part and replaced it. That didn't fix it so I took it back and they said it was the control arm. Again they ordered the part and I took it back and they replaced it. They called me once they replaced the control arm and said the noise was still there. Said they were going to order and replace the bearing and axle. So again I took took it back again and they replaced it. I thought that fixed the problem the problem as the sound disappeared for a month but is back. So I have an appointment to get it looked at.
This is why I am apprehensive about keeping this vehicle past the warranty end date or mileage. Maybe I just bought a lemon and most JGC's are more reliable.
I also got here from JGC, since 1999 until 2012 I had two JGC, same WJ, and was very happy about those vehicles, however reliability of our cars much lower that Japs. First jeep i drove until 65k without problems, developing humm from front axle. Second i drove until 80k without problems, but tranny started throwing codes. This time i turned to Toy made in Japan hoping to get 100k without problems and still have good resale value (if I don't mod it). Domestic cars for some unknown reasons depreciate faster than imports. I wonder, why?

Brother, with a repair track record like you've cited, I have to admit I admire your loyalty. I'd be soooo pi$$ed .... All that in ~1 yr! Too bad, really.

Just because they run their generations pretty long, doesn't mean they wont change the look up. They've done it before. They even upgrade or change up interior as well. They might not change the overall look but you can bet they will refresh it somehow to keep people intrigued and happy.

As compared to US auto manufacturers, Toyota does very few changes the 4Runner between model years. I purchased my 2010 TE last September and, other than the radio, you couldn't tell the difference between the '10 and 2012.
Lol. Yes I have been ticked off about my experience so far. I should have been a little more specific. I like the comfort and ride of my Jeep. Also, the V6 has enough power for me. This is my 1st Jeep that I traded my Subaru with. I didn't get a loaded Jeep. It's a basic Laredo with remote start, Bluetooth radio, and sunroof. I understand if I go to a 4Runner the ride will be different and more truck like, which is fine for me. I don't go offroading so I won't need a trail edition. Like I said I plan on keeping the jeep until the warranty is up and then going to seriously look at the 4runner. Thanks to everyone for the info.

I was pretty close to doing exactly what you did - pull the trigger on a v6 Laredo 4x4, they look frick'n sweet. I looked at the limited GC but the interior was just too cramped and the asking price seemed too steep for the build quality - I'd buy a Jeep GC for 30k, but not for 40k, regardless of gadgets and doodads and v8. I ended up going w/ a 4runner LTD and am really happy w/ my decision and haven't looked back. Jeep build quality just seems too questionable...........

If you're really going to trade this off, wouldn't you be better off financially to do it sooner vs later? Just sayin'.
Also, you've never said if you've driven a 5th Gen. Now, I've never driver a Jeep, nor a pickup in a looong time, but to describe the ride of an SR5 as "more truck-like" strikes me as awfully subjective. I, in fact, found mine a little, um, soft maybe? for my taste. To the end that I put Bilsteins on it, which helped IMO.
When I go test drive the 2014s with the V8, I'll want to drive a TE too, esp if they have BP (Storm Trooper!).

Funny, I'm planning to sell my 4Runner and buy a '14 GC later this year. Would really like an Overland. For a little more than a 4Runner LE you can get a much nicer interior, options, ride. I'd probably also get the V8 with 8 speed tranny and higher tow capacity. 30 mpg diesel sounds nice, but expensive.
But I am worried some about reliability since I've had very few issues with my 5th gen.
Also wonder how long before the 4Runner becomes a unibody. Only hope it doesn't turn into a crossover like the Pathfinder.
