4runner thinks it's on before starting?

Disagree if you wish, but "Checked the battery voltage through the cig lighter and it's like 12.2v while key in On position and will drop to 0 while key in start position." <--thats not quite normal.

Why not? Doesn't most ignition switches cut accessory when cranking? That seems normal. :wink2:

I would 100% agree. Go plug something into the cig lighter and crank the truck. It will shut off and come back on. Thus it goes from 12.2v to 0. That is correct.

OP, don't see how that would just go bad. If it were me. I would pay the stealership the diagnostic fee and take it to an independent shop to have it looked at. The dealer seems to be a bit shady with the pricing and all.

Just my .02

Thanks for the advice, I'm an EE major myself so I also find it to be unbelievable for the ECM to simply fail like this (all fuses and wires are okay, power supply to it is okay).

But I still followed TRDCal(thanks!)'s advice to get a used ECM since I could later return it to the Ebay seller anyway if it doesn't seem to fix the problem.

Good news is that after they putting it in the 4runner cranked and started, and then died.

The dealer said that it was the immobilizer killing the engine and they need to short it for 40 minutes to reset the ECM so not everything could be done today.

Hope everything would work out tomorrow and thanks again for all that helped in the thread!

Just returned from the dealership and everything worked out today, maybe it's just that I haven't been driving it for quite a while, even the steering feels a lot lighter now:jump:

Hopefully the used ECM could last a while and thanks again for everyone's help!

Way to persevere and get to solution Nicolachel. I'm an EE as well.
