4Runner V8 Limited depreciates more compared to GX470 after 2 years

I am not trying to start a flame or to bash anyone here. I also throught about the fully loaded 4Runner V8 Limited before I finialized the GX.

"4Runner V8 Limited" devalue more compared GX470 after 2 years. I am trying to compare both cars with realistic minimum options. I only have the 2003 wholesale prices since these models are only 2 years old.

I got the estimated invoice price from Edmunds.com and then added the following dealer markup:
$3,000 Lexus Dealer Markup
$1,000 Toyota Dealer Markup

GX470
$45,489 - 2005 Base Invoice w/ Mandatory 3rd Row + Destination + $3,000 Dealer Markup
- $38,414 - Manheim Wholesale Auction Average 2003 GX470 Price
= $7,075 - 2 Year Depreciation

4Runner V8 4WD Limited
$37,656 - 2005 Base Invoice w/ Mandatory Option Package A w/ 6 CD + Destination + $1,000 Dealer Markup
- $27,567 - Manheim Wholesale Auction Average 2003 4Runner V8 4WD Price
= $10,089 - 2 Year Depreciation

I don't use Kelly Blue Book or Edmunds.com for the used car values. The Manheim averages are more accurate based on real transactions. One of my friends is a Toyota sales and he confirmed the GX470 auction prices are high.

If you are interested in top of the line 4Runner V8 Limited and plan use it just for a few years, you may want to check out the Lexus GX470.

Shows the importance of branding. Also the average Lexus will be in much better condition than the average 4Runner after 2 years. Just buyer demographics.

SHow you for what bargain you can get a 2nd hand 4Runner.

Also remember Toyota dealers tend to discount way more than Lexus dealers when buying new. Than also makes the picture lopsided. Forget about getting aLexus even close to invoice, you normally get a good deal if you get a few K off the MSRP.

I don't think you can do the comparison that way. Cost of money on a $50K Lexus versus my $33K 4runner also have to look at the cost of the vehicle versus the trade in that you end up with. Can't go by MSRP, got to go by what you pay. Better deals in my area on the 4runner. Also you need to look at 4 years not 2 years. Everyone loses big time at 2 years. Understand that would be hard to do since the 4runner has only been out for 2 years.

Interesting....I sold my 2003 LTD V8 with roughly 27,000kms exactly 2 years after purchase for like $44K CDN....sticker was right around $51K brand new.

That's definetly nowhere near $14K of depreciation in 2 years....although BC is a special case, as you will pay full MSRP for a new one, and 50K is the start of 14% luxury tax. Combine that with a retardedly strong market for any used Toyota 4x4s (We sell clean 1993 4x4 V6 trucks/Runners with 200,000kms for like 13-14K all day long), and you've got the ideal situation I suppose....

I agree with Pitbull that the comparison isn't accurate. The Lexus is considered a luxury vehicle. This is like comparing the resale value of a Camry to a Lexus ES 330. If you were to compare the resale value of 4runners to those in it's class (Chevy Trailblazer, Jeep Cherokee, etc.) then I dare say it has the best resale value. I've been shopping for used 4runners for a friend and I'm seeing 2nd gens with over 150k miles still going for $4000-$5000.

This is one of the reasons I feel Car & Driver had a hidden agenda in their review.

Plus, you must figure in the opportunity cost on the 8,000 dollar difference over two years time. In fact, I bet it is more like 10,000 difference between the two. Who knows, maybe you could have bought some Google stock and a 4Runner too. I like that deal better.
