When towing a trailer, does the tongue weight have to be factored into the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)?
Also, does the weight of gas in the tank have to be taken out of the payload (therefore also factored into the GVWR)? If so, how much does a gallon of gas weigh?
I'm trying to figure how close I'm coming to the manufactureres specifications for my 4Runner when towing my boat. I thought I was well within the specs because my trailer is at least 600# below the 5000# limit, but the combined rating (GVCWR) is only 8800#. With the base 4Runner weight at around 3600#, it doesn't leave that much room for payload, especially if the tongue weight and gas must be factored in!
