4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

If somebody was looking to do a lift without wheel spacers, what options are out there now? I know you can get wheels with correct backspacing, but are there other things to consider?

If you don't want wheel spacers and a lift, then don't put them on. It's as simple as that.

It might be a good idea to update this post. The original sticky is years old and there is a lot more useful information out there now.

Missing vendors:
Radflo , King , Fox , Bilstein 6125s , etc...

The part about the sway bar relocation kit / diff drop has caused a lot of people to order extras as most vendors ship them with the kit now. Just something you might point out as many people I talk to use this sticky as the end all to ordering there 1st lift kits.

Toytec Superflex Springs actually give 3" lift not 2" and the HDs are 4"
* Should know I've installed 30+ of these springs now

Might throw a part in about shock body size.
( rough idea )
1.5" is good for stock
2.0 for a bumper and skids
2.5 once you get into winches heavier bumpers skids etc...

example an ultimate kit on bilstein 5100s is not going to last a year with a heavy bumper ( some ive seen exceed 150 lbs ) , 12000 lb winch , Skids , roof top tent , etc.. It will over heat and burn up. I couldn't find a good link to share explaining this better sorry. I also don't know if a heavier spring would make up the difference.

What can i install as a complete lift to give me 2/1 so I can get 265/70r17 under the truck? I have looked at the toytec/bilstein 5100 lift but that gives 3/2 (and you're saying 3/4 here). I don't want to jump to a 275/70r17 tire, tires are $60 more each for the extra size. What should I be looking at?
Would like to replace fronts and rears for a better ride and a slightly bigger tire.

I'm running 265/70-17 without a lift. Minor, minor rubbing at full lock or full flex. No trimming was done, I still have my mudflaps. Tires are Cooper Discoverer A/T3.

For a short lift, either get the spacers or check out the OME low lift - see here: http://www.sleeoffroad.com/products/4runner_suspension.htm

A couple of options..

you can also fit 255/75/17s under a 2/1 lift a well. In fact thats my strategy. There are a lot of spacer/coil shock/strut combos that can get you to 2/1. :bluejump:

Same here. Running 265/70/17 With no lift. Hankook dynapro atm tires. The only rubbing I HAD was in the passenger side front wheel well. Trimmed off the little bubble in the fender liner that was covering a mounting bolt for the washer reservoir. No more rubbing.

Exact tire I want. Thank you.

I'm impressed with these tires. They did well in the one decent snow event we had here in GA last year. They're relatively quiet for an AT tire. Wearing well. I believe they have around 25k miles on them now.

Here's a pic:

As soon as the Xreas bites the dust I'm going to throw a set of 5100's on it and lift it a little. Probably put some spidertrax spacers on it too.

Oneluv summed it up good. Get the Bilsteins from Down South Motorsports, will be $335 if I remember correctly. Order a 1.5" daystar spacer for the rear and pick that thing up a little.
Oh, from one father of teens to another, make him help! Let him learn how to do that stuff so that when he gets it he can do it himself. Also, if you are going to be looking at new tires go with something that has a more aggressive look. Some wheel spacers or rims that push the tires out an inch will help greatly too. Don't let him talk you into big rims, they ride like shit and will get bent up offroad if you guys ever do that. And never underestimate the power of plastidip! You can change the whole look with that stuff and when you don't like it anymore pull it right off. I've even done interior pieces in mine with it. You can also paint over plastidip and still pull it off later.

Man, looks like the price went waaay up??

any other places?

Again, This would be for a 2003 4runner -SR5 2 wheel drive

Looks like you have the front and rear selected on the first item, then rears again in the second.

Well that makes sense now. Didn't see that part. Good deal.

So with the mood coil springs and the shocks, will I need anything else? Sorry, just dont know squat about this and trusting yall suggestions.

Struts? Hell, i barley even know what they are. Are they installed with the shocks.

The FJ springs and Bilstein shocks is all you need if you are replacing shocks and springs to get a little lift...and someone to install it.

Will it cause any issues with rubbing etc? If not, then spacers are mostly for aesthetics?
Lifting wont cause rubbing.

Increasing tire size can because they are physically bigger but the space they occupy stays the same.
Adding spacers can because it increases the radius of the steering arc, meaning the tire can move further forward and backward than without the spacer.

So yes, spacers are generally aesthetic add ons, but they can be used to help correct some rubbing from larger tires under certain combinations of modifications.

Newbie Here!

This is my first post here so please be patient.

I recently bought a 2006 SR5 V8 2WD with 95k miles. After a few trips this month (Montana and Louisiana) and reading every article I can from you guys, I think I know what mods I want to do.

#1. That damn traction control- Hate it. Made life miserable driving through trails and such, it is to sensitive IMHO. I think I may have found another way around the mod though. A few days after purchasing from Carmax, the TRAC and VSC warning light came on. I read a few articles here about it and decided to change the gas cap- it didn't work. I was about to take it to a Toyota dealership when I thought to check fuses. After checking interior fuses several times I noticed a green wire with a black stripe had butt connectors on it. I remember signing the title and seeing the 4runner was previously a fleet vehicle. I thought maybe they installed a tracking device. Turns out the butt connectors were to big for the wire and one came loose, I attached the right sizes and boom, no more warning lights. Not sure if I can hook up a toggle switch to that wire and get the same results to turn off TRAC but it seems to work. Any thoughts? Mod seems easier than running wire from the engine area.

#2- USB- or lack of. With a passenger driving 28 hours to Montana, we were in critical need. We had to keep unplugging the Garmin GPS to charge phones- sucked mucho. I saw a write up on adding a dual USB plug that will fit in the blank spots, the guy painted it black to match and it looks great in the pictures.

#3- Suspension, and the main reason for posting. I read all the write ups on the many options. But it seems to me that everything is leaning towards 4WD 4 runners. I love taking a 2WD truck through the mud as well :frisky:. However, I don't plan to with this one. Just some easy trail riding and pulling a boat, going to the beach and so on. I want a firmer ride for highway, stiffer springs and better shocks. Most of my travels are highway time. I contacted Toytechlifts for help after reading all the write ups here. I just want to reduce rake, not concerned with lifting, while getting stiffer springs and better shocks. I also don't want to use a lift kit. Toytechlifts recommends using OME 885 coils and OME90021 shocks for front with OME 60020 shocks for the rear. Looking for thoughts on this setup. :lookout:

#4- Other upgrades- Like other vehicles, the factory radio sucks. I already removed the carbon intake filter and will be removing the exhaust resonator and moving exhaust to the side instead of the back, I get the weird smell with the back window down.

Over all I am happy with the 4 runner. Great traveling vehicle for me, previous was a Chevy trailblazer (night and day comparison). Love the 4.7 V8 and I like how effortlessly it accelerates, it did very well through the mountains in Colorado and Montana with the truck packed full of gear in every seat.

Hope I didn't bore everyone to death. :nerd:but I really need help with the suspension question and the TRAC/ VSC mod.

Thanks!
