4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

-An alignment is always recommended after playing with suspension components.

-KYB's for the street? Doable. Touch dirt? Look elsewhere. Do yourself a favor and search the for-sale section or local CL's for TRD Taco's or FJ Bilsteins if you want to be cheap but have semi-off roadable suspension. Those can be swapped over with easy adjustments. Even 5th gen suspension will swap over with a few adjustments.

-Get the right leveling kit and it'll lessen the rake.

Again, research like I answered in your other post.
Yeah, looks like that guy did like no research. Good summary.

Also, a set of Bilstein 5100s are $350 shipped. Re-use your springs, and do that. No lift, but then get spacers if you want one.

I have an 08 limited v8 and am exploring suspension options. I just want to bring the front up level with the rear maybe even leave a tad bit of rake in the front. Nothing major. I'm thinking FJ coils, front and rear, and bil 5100s front only set at 0.85 setting. Will this set up achieve what I'm going for? Also, those who have done this, does the ride improve from stock? I want to level out but not at the cost of decreased ride quality. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Can easily help you with that at a good price if you just want to lift the front. Can do a uhmw spacer and ride quality won't change, guaranteed never to compress. ANY SIZE you want, custom made.

Trying to get the rear a little higher. Hard to see in the picture but I'm not a huge fan of the rear being lower than the front.

Currently have stock springs with daystar spacers in the rear. Not sure if I should do Fj with bags and/or 1" spacer,, wheelers t12, or icon 2". At the point where I need to make up my mind, going on a trip soon.

Metaltech LT springs with 5100 shocks anyone? Does this pair function well together?

I'm looking for a little more lift than the daystar spacers and i hear these ride the best? Just put the 5100s in a few months ago and dont really want to upgrade to the icon 2.0 already.

Personally I probably wouldn't if the metaltech LT springs are 2"....I believe they are. Unless you extend the rear bumpstops. I researched shock extended length and compressed length and found that either the icon or fox are a fair bit longer.....don't quote me (do your own reserach) but I believe the fox's are an extended length of 24.66" and the bilsteins are only like 23.5" so with the bilsteins you might top-out a lot easier. I'm running toytec superflex with the fox 2.0 and have yet to top or bottom out and I haven't extended the bump stops at all. Hope that helps :)

Doing some much needed work this week on the old 4Runner which includes new strut mounts. I figure while I'm under there why not just put in all new shocks and coils. It seems a common choice is 5100's with Tundra or FJ coils. But I'm not after a crazy lift, maybe just a little bit, and the most dirt it sees is pretty well maintained trails in and out of camping/fishing spots.

Is there any benefit to just running a full FJ or Tundra set up?

I have personally been running FJ Coils all the way around with FJ TRD shocks and a 1 inch spacer in the front just to level it. This provided a mild lift and slightly heavier coil rate which stiffened up things for the better.

I have since added some drawers to the back and now I will be switching to OME 895's in the rear with nitro shocks however, based on what you mentioned for your interest I think you would be happy withe FJ setup.

my 2 cents

Good info. Thank!

I done a spacer lift up front and coils in the rear
Big mistake. The front only lift about 1.5 while the rear lifted 4. Wish i read into this more. Got any ideas to left remove the rack i got. Lift was pose to lift and level it out 3 inches

I can help you easily. Shoot me a text or call me at 717-319-2100

Alright guys, i know there is TONS of information in this thread/others on the forum but i wanted to see if there is any new info/products or comments based on a few years of use/abuse on your rigs!

I just picked up an '04 V8 and am looking for a medium priced upgrade to it. After spending hours looking through all of this info, i've arrived at the following mods - any comments or feedback is greatly appreciated!

  • Bilstein 6112 Front/5160 Rear Kit - $1150
  • Toytec 2" Rear Springs - $239
  • Camburg UCA with Moog BJ - $529
  • New OEM LCA's - $??
  • Replace Swaybar Bushings - $75

This should result in a total "kit' that costs ~$2200, depending on what i do with the lower control arms (may just replace bushings). So it's about ~$500 cheaper than the Icon Stage 2 kit and seems worth it to me.

Thoughts?

Hi guys. New the forum and new to 4Runners. Just picked up an 04 with 140K miles and looking to start with a lift. On a budget of course so thinking about doing 5100 Bilsteins in the front with Toytec front coil lift springs. And then in the rear Toytec Superflex springs, keeping the stock shock until I get some more money. Looking for a level truck, 3" lift in the front 2" in the rear I guess...I think I'll get what I'm looking for with these parts, what do you think? Anything else I should get (except the new rear shocks)? Thanks.

Tire question

So I have am newer to the forum but have read through countless pages and done searches here and on other sites and cannot find out a straight answer. I just about to switch up my suspension from FJ Coils and TRD shock all the way around and a 1" spacer on top of the coils in the front.

Last night I installed OME 885 coils and matched nitro charger shocks with the trim packer on the drivers side and next week will install 884's up front with the matched nitro charger shocks. My Runner is a 06 limited on the stock 18" limited wheels and I am trying to figure out if I can get 265/70r/18's (skinnies) to fit without doing a body mount chop. I don't mind trimming but I don't want to do deal with chopping body mounts at this time. If I cannot fit these then I would go with 255/70r/18's which are crazy cheap for these skinnies.

I spend a lot of time on-road but when I do get off-road its more overlanding than crawling but ends up covering the range of terrain.

I appreciate your thoughts in advance.

Bumpstops on 2005 Limited with FJ/5100s Lift

Hey guys, I haven't found a super solid thread on this and can't get a bead on if anyone is actually doing them, but do I need to upgrade front/rear or both bumpstops with the FJ/5100 lift? I am doing 2.5 in the front setting and spacers in the rear on a V8. Seems not many people are posting about it, but I have seen some videos of bushing welds sheared straight off of the lower part of the strut and people say it's due to not running bumpstops on the truck. Thanks in advance!

Alright guys here's the plan. I currently have 5100's all around set to 0". I would like to get about 3" in the front and 2" in the rear. (want to fit a 33" tire). I'm planning to pick up FJ springs tonight and put them on with the 5100's. PLUS a 2.5 daystar spacer lift (2.5 front/1.5 rear). Question is, will this work? Leave 5100's at 0"? Am I fine as far as UCA goes? Thanks!

I'm running cooper 255 80 r17s on mine with spacers today and no body chop. I don't think this will be a problem for you. I'm raised 3x2 and real skinny but no probs

New Suspension This Coming Week

Here's the lineup for my 2009 Limited.

Currently running spacers front and back with xreas - 147k and everything is worked to the bone and ready for replacement.

Running Cooper Discoverer AT 255/80R17s (if I remember correctly)

It isn't pretty anymore but still rolls okay.

New stuff to be installed:

1. Metal Tech Offset Rear Lower Links

2. Radflo 09 Extended Travel Coilovers 2.5 (have to consider spring rate for winch & bumper but thinking standard 600# will do? Your thoughts appreciated.

3. Metal Tech 09 Rear Long Travel Suspension II kit with heavy 2.0 Radflo shock option. (shocks, bump stops, springs)

4. JBA HD High Caster UCAs

Be about $2800...

I've got a set of brand new Bilsteins extended travel for the rear in the garage but are hesitant to use them with this setup.

All goes well this week - I'll be installing the first week of August or sooner. Pictures 2 follow!
