4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Alright guys here's the plan. I currently have 5100's all around set to 0". I would like to get about 3" in the front and 2" in the rear. (want to fit a 33" tire). I'm planning to pick up FJ springs tonight and put them on with the 5100's. PLUS a 2.5 daystar spacer lift (2.5 front/1.5 rear). Question is, will this work? Leave 5100's at 0"? Am I fine as far as UCA goes? Thanks!

If you have the 5100s, can't you adjust them up instead of using spacers? As for UCAs, you should be fine at 2.5, but if you go higher it'll be tough to get a positive caster.

You have 5100's in the rear? I've never seen that, was just about to buy this kit with them in the front only.

Newbie

Hey folks, complete newb to all things suspension related, and have been reading a ton of stuff on here trying to figure out my best route. The confusion has only increased....

I have a 2005 4runner V6 4WD with 200k on it. In need of new tires, and while I was at it, thought about lifting/leveling the vehicle as well. I dont do much off-roading, but do hit fire roads in the mountains frequently, with detours down lesser maintained side roads occasionally as well. I like to explore areas, but not trying to rock crawl or attempt any seriously technical trails while doing so. I dont think I need anything "high performance", as my current setup has mostly taken me wherever I wanted to go without any issues. I drive in fairly heavy snow conditions for half the year as well.

I mainly want to level out the front with the rear, but as Ive never replaced the shocks/struts, thought it was a good time to tackle that as well. It does seem to be riding soft and unresponsive off road and in corners going up and down the mountain pass. It would be nice to add a little ground clearance, but Im also not looking to have a noticeably "lifted"/agressive looking vehicle.

Current thoughts were adding a leveling kit, new shocks and going to a slightly taller tire (255/75R17).

Also have seen a lot of info on the Bilstein 5100. would getting those negate the need to get a leveling/lift kit? What would these offer in terms of ride performance, on and off road? Unnecessary for my needs?

The Daystar 2.5/1.5 seems popular, would it be best/cheapest to just get that and replace factory shocks?

Just looking for a little more guidance on the best route to take. My budget for new tires, shocks, lift, etc) is about $1500, but less is always nice.

Thanks for any help!

Currently have Bilstein 5100's set to 1.75" with Moog FJC springs all around.
I have two major questions...

1. I've been thinking about lifting the rig a little more...
Can I lift the rig a little more with Daystar 2.5/1.5 lift? Or is there another way to lift my rig a little more without going TOO crazy? Are there other strut spacer kits that are worth looking into? Right now I have reverse rake, so i'd like to ultimately get rid of that.....

2. I'm currently maxed out on my stock alignment parts, but the alignment is not all that close to stock. If I want to get my alignment specs closer to factory or lift my rig more, what parts will I need to do this? Is an UCA, all I need? Or is there more too it?

My advice is to get the 5100/OME setup going. (Or maybe the toytec one although it's generally a bigger lift) however if you get 5100s and leave them on the lowest perch and add a set of 884s and 895s you will net a modest lift without the need for new UCAs and can fit the pizza cutter tires you want. You should be able to get all this for right at $1500

Have an 06 Limited with 167k miles that I purchased a year ago, and I think it's time to look at dealing with the ball joints as I don't know their age and nothing looks like it's been touched since new. I've got a 5100 OME rear/FJ front setup, with 2 notches showing on fronts (not sure if this means 3rd or 4th notched used). Is there anything I need to be aware of before buying factory control arms, am I stressing these components with my current setup? If I'm going through the effort of replacing parts, overbuilding is fine but overkill is not. I just don't want to be replacing a stressed component with another stressed part. No one likes to finish prematurely! Thanks

If you are currently running and plan to run a lift why not got with an adjustable aftermarket UCA setup?

If it's not necessary, I'd prefer to stay away from items like uni-balls and urethane that require more service than oem joints. Same reason I like the 5100s vs. Coils, avoid disassembly for maintenance.

Hello, I have a 06 with about 153K on it. I finally decided to go with the OME 884's and shocks up front and toytec superflex with the 60020 shocks in the rear. I also ordered the drivers side spacer for the gas tank lean, but one of them are on back order. My question is: Will I have to get a new upper control arm? Are there any bushings that I need to worry about or just get changed since i will be getting a new suspension in? Is there anything else I need to buy before I get this installed? How much is the avg price to have this installed at a shop? Thanks!

If you are under 3 inch lift or even at it a good shop should be able to get you aligned without UCAs

First post! 03 SR5 V8 many ?

First 4Runner, been playing with cars and trucks for 35 years. My fav was my 1970 International Scout 800a. Anyway Im looking to update my 145,000 mile suspension. No lift needed, mabye 1" or so in the rear and 1.5" upfront just to level out. Truck needs tires ,so Ill probably go up 1 size to a 265 75 17 or something like that.
Ok I think best bang for the buck would be a FJ or Gen 5 4Runner takeoff OEM setup, exactly what years work best without any mods?
As for wheels what offset are the stockers? Id like to push the wheels out about an inch os so ,so less or more negative offset? What are people running.

cheers

Okay so I know there's a lot here but not a ton regarding my special situation. I have fj Bilsteins all around and set at 2.5 up front. I have an '05 V8 and feel I'm not getting the lift I want out of it. I'm running aftermarket UCAs and trying to get 3.25" up front. I will eventually have a lowpro c4 bumper installed which is only 75lbs. Anyone have input. I'm stuck between biting the coilover bullet or running OME 886 with 1/4 top plate spacer. Anyone have advice? Trying to run 285 soon as well. Thanks!!

I went with the Toytec 521600 HD springs. They list them for Tacomas but they work. I have my 5100's on the bottom setting and got 4 inch lift for the front with the V8. However my stock XREAS shocks were shot and sagged some from stock height. I am running 255/80 17 and only had to trim a little off the inside of my mud flap. In the future I will get an ARB bumper and will most likely run the spring set up a notch to compensate for the sag.

Yes they ride nice, I'm actually surprised.

Rancho Quick lift leveling kit

Has anyone used this kit and is it worth it, $550. We won't be doing much rock crawling but will use in the snow and local fire roads up in Big Bear, CA area. We are also looking at the ToyTec 3" Lift Kit Bilstein 5100 Coilovers. Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Thanks for taking the time to write this up. I'm new and want to ask a couple of questions about my upcoming lift:

- When you say spacers aren't great for even moderate off-road, does that mean ride comfort?

- My incoming kit is a Rough Country 760.20A. My struts are shot so I'm also getting new ones (KYB Excel G). I have a reputable garage doing the lift (3"). They're charging about $1390 (they're supplying the parts and labor both). Is this about normal?

Thanks

I just bought 5100's with Wheeler's (see Eibach/Sway-A-Way) Springs. Adjustable's set to stock setting with T1 coils in the front and 5100's and T12 springs in the rear. Wheeler's had a great price on the adjustables and their coils/springs will provide about a 2" lift without spacers. These are more heavy duty than Stock FJ stuff and the prices are reasonable. I found some like new T12's on the FJ forum for $100 shipped (would have been $60 more to get new T12's from Wheeler's), paid $482 for the adjustable Billy's with T1's installed (incl shipping) and $154 for the rears via Amazon (Summit also had a good price on rears) shipped to the door. All hardware installed or included. Total was $736 to my door. Wheeler's was great to work with. Highly recommend them. Goodbye XREAS! Install next week.

That's about $500 in parts, so the $890 in labor seems steep to me. I just installed the rough country kit minus the struts and if I had a shop it wouldn't take more then a couple hours to install.

Along with my original post above, will i need to worry about the bushing on the lower control arm or the ball joint, with the miles I have on?
