4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

I have a suspension, tire and rim question. I have a Toytech / Bilstien lift. Currently running Cooper Disocery A/T3 275 70 R17 tires. However, the tires are mounted on aftermarket rims and I’d prefer some version of the OE rims.

eBay has a lot of Tacoma takeoffs that are sized 17 x 7”. So here are my questions:

1. Will the Tacoma 17 x 7 wheels fit with my setup without rubbing?

2. Will gen 5. T4R wheels fit without rubbing?

3. What is the ideal rim width and backspace for my setup?

Thanks!

If I am considering a lift and one day adding an aftermarket front and rear bumper, what would you recommend? From what I read in the sticky, especially on the OME kits, you order the springs associated with the weights on your vehicle now and aren't adjustable. I'm replacing tires and rims. Rim size is staying 17 but would like to go a size up to 26570r17s on tires. Thanks! I have a 2007 4th gen SR5.

Options to boost front another inch or so

Hello all, first post here. Just picked up an '07 SR5 with some mods already. It looks like it's Toytec 112620 springs and 5100s in the front. I can see three grooves just above the bottom spring perch, so they must be on 0, right? The rear is Toytec RCC2.0 and 5100. It also has a 1" body lift. So, this should be 2.5" F, 2" R, and 1" BL as I understand.

It rides pretty good, but does wander around just slightly. I'm planning to add some JBA UCAs to make sure I can get things lined out properly. I'd like to boost the front a little more though to level it out. As I measured the front is 2.5"-2.75" lower, LF - 37.5, RF - 38.25, LR - 40.25, RR - 40.75.

What is the best way to add 1-1.5" to the front while I'm adding the UCAs? I don't want to redo everything and spend a bunch, hoping to just add a little to what I've got, or swap for some taller springs. Thanks!

Probably a dumb question, but is anyone running 07+ Tundra rear shocks?

My rear is saggy after rack, RTT, drawers and gear.

Currently got Fox 2.0 with Toytec Superflex 2".

Want to upgrade to the MetalTech LT rear setup, but want to keep my Fox shocks. Fox makes a 2.5 Rear with DSC (883-26-006), but only says 0-1.5" of lift. Supposedly the Tundra shocks can do 3" of lift and fit the 4th gen.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Bump. Any advice on this?

Either a 1/2" or 3/4" top plate spacer should net you 1-1.5". Honestly, if you're fine with it, I'd go with the 3/4" spacer, because that way you don't need to replace your top hat studs.

I just bought these to put up front, but I think I changed my mind and I'm not going to use it. I loaded up my rear with my drawer setup and it came down a bit. Now 1.5" might be too much.

I bought a 3/8" and 1/4" top plate spacer right now to put in on the L/R side, respectively. This should fix the driver's lean, and it'll be less rake.

These springs will be good, no need for a top spacer. You can add a 1/2 spacer if you install a bumper in the future to get back the loss from weight sag. These have the same spring rate just one extra coil for more lift.

Alright I’ve got some questions and also asking for any recommendations for springs.

I recently got my 04 and it’s a v8/4wd. I’ve decided I’m going to go with 5100s all around to start off with and go from there. But for springs I have no clue what I would want. So I’m open to suggestions, I’m looking for 2.5” in the front and 2” in the back.

For my question, my 04 has the XREAS system (without the rear ride height thing) so I’m going to be having my mechanic remove it and install the new suspension. Is there any bushings or hardware I should get a head of time that may need replacing? The 4R has 160k on it so I’m expecting some things to be worn out by now so is there also anything else I should just look into replacing so once the new suspension is on I won’t have any issues?

I will be doing UCAs but not right away unless absolutely necessary.

Do the install your self. It will save you a lot of money. I did it for myself a couple weeks ago and I have no experience with suspension upgrades. There are lot of helpful videos on YouTube

Is it really not that bad? When I was getting new tires for my 4R the guy at the tire shop was interested and asked what suspension it had, when he found out it was XREAS he said they don’t even touch them. So I assumed it was pretty difficult. I’ll take a look at some videos, thanks! About how long did it take you to swap it out?

I can piggy back off of this and tell you that you can do it yourself. I'm not very experienced with this stuff and I was able to replace my X-REAS system. It probably took a little longer than it should have because of rusted/seized bolts but it wasn't too bad. Also, my shocks were just plain gone so they were touch to remove from the rear. I couldn't be happier with my 5100s though.

It’s easy to remove the xreas system. There a YouTube video showing how to remove. Just 3 bolts that are attached to the frame and one bolt connected to the old shock. I ended up just cutting the the line and about a cup of hyrdaulic fluid oozed out, make sure to have a bucket ready or oil pan. Took me about 20 mins to remove

I just looked up a video and it does look pretty straight forward. The only other thing is I have never done any sort of suspension work before, so will be getting the old XREAS shocks and springs out and putting the new ones in be difficult? Do I need any special tools?

I have an 08 4Runner sport with XREAS suspension. the shocks are blown and i would like to just get the 5100 shocks/lift. am i able to do this with the Xreas system? can i just get rid of that system all together? i would like about a 2-3" lift and level on the 4Runner. just want to know what you think.

I did this last summer. All 4 wheels off the ground, crack open fluid line at the junction block on the frame rail, one on either side. let drain. remove line from each shock, let drain. Remove all hard lines and flex lines for shocks. Remove like any other shock/strut system. Install new shocks and springs, enjoy.

You need a jack , jack stands, and a socket wrench with at least 12mm, 17mm and 19mm. ThAts pretty much it. Just watch a lot of YouTube videos and you should be good. It took me about 6 hours to do the full job but if I had to do it again I could easily do it in 3 hours

Hey everyone, I have a question about my Bilstein 6112's on my 05 V8. I currently have the standard spring (14" x 3" @ 600lbs.) on the top perch, and I'm not getting the lift I want from it. I am going to be upgrading to a steel bumper with a winch soon, and need more lift. I know that i can replace the springs with a heavier weight spring, like the king springs at 650 or 700 lbs... but what about adding a longer spring? If I bumped it down to the bottom perch (1" lower) and got a 16" spring (adding 2"... but dropping it 1" so effectively adding 1" of spring) would that be horrible? Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks
