4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Personally I think you’re gonna get different answers from everyone you ask but for your situation no I don’t think you’ll need UCA’s with that suspension set up. But like I said I’m sure plenty of people will disagree with me

What was the limiting factor that would require new wheels? UCA contact? I just put this lift on, and measuring around, that is my main concern. I've got limited wheels though, so I have another 5mm of backspacing, and less bulge on tires.

Debating sticking with my limited wheels, or getting a set of 17" FJ wheels (+15mm backspace instead of 25/30) on local Facebook for cheap.

Really like the Eibach Pro-Truck setup though. My friends keep telling me I need to go up a notch in the front though :becky:

That's right the +30mm offset on the stock 16" wheel with 33's would be too close and rub the UCA is my guess. If you go with a wider tire you'll want to have a lower number offset.

I won't be crawling or doing crazy off-roading, this will be a daily driver and camper/trail boy. I purchased a 2007 v6 4wd runner with 150k on it.

Again, welcome, and again, thx for your patience. Your response told me all I need to know about you as a person, and it's appreciated.

I bolded the things I can address from experience. I too have a 2007 V6 and my off-roading needs are similar so I hope what I can share will be especially useful as you decide what works best for you.

For daily driving and a bit of minimal pedestrian off-roading I have come to conclusion that Bilstein 5100's and OME 884's on all 4 corners would make sense for me. I'll be purchasing FN five star wheels that are 16x8 I do believe? And you all have convinced me that BFG KO2's will be wrapped around them. I don't want a crazy lift so I was thinking setting the rates at 1.75'. will that be a level lift without raising the back or will I need to raise the rears? Also if I run 265/70/r16 tires will I need wheel spacers? And are UCA upgrades a requirement/suggested/option?

andreylights gave some good advice. If you're after functionality, a stock 4R is very capable off the pavement and anything you do to improve it will just make it better. My truck has an upgraded suspension but is still stock in the sense that my components came off a 2015 TRD Offroad Tacoma (full details in the "X-REAS delete..." post linked in my sig).

It may be useful to take 10 minutes to watch my YT vids (channel is linked in my sig) on the 2018 and 2019 Kentucky Toyota Trail Rides. I ran the first one on my 11-year-old X-REAS and stock springs and the latter one on my new setup. Truck handled and rode much better in '19 but my point is it had no trouble negotiating some nice and reasonably challenging terrain either way.

Suspension is a tough choice b/c you can spend as much or as little as you want, opinions are so subjective, and most of all, it's not a shirt you can return if you don't like the fit. I imagine there are people who drop $1,500 on something, drive a couple of miles, and go, "Aw crap..." because you can't know how you will like the setup on your rig until you drive it. That's why I went cheap the first go round. Now that I know I love the setup, I'll ride my 4600s till they're done and replace them with a new set of Bilsteins.

If possible, you could also check out 4R groups close to you and see if anyone has the same components you're considering and see if they'll let you ride shotgun. Even a trip around the block will leave you with that much more information before you dole out any $.

About spacers, I run Spidertrax and believe the stance is how Toyota should have made 4th Gens look to begin with (see my build thread for more). With that said, I run the stock tire size now so I can't comment on whether you'll need them to get the look you want. Be aware that it is critically important to install the spacer lugs correctly, which is with the beveled side in and flat side out, using red thread locker, and properly torqued.

I'm also debating between a pioneer AVH-2550NEX and Kenwood DMX7706S head unit? Didn't know if anyone had opinions on those.

I definitely have an opinion. ;-) I bought a Kenwood (but not that model) a few years ago and regretted it. I now have that exact Pioneer HU and it's golden. More on the install in the stereo post linked in my thread. Happy to discuss details on why I like the Pioneer so much better if that would be helpful, just PM me or post in my build thread.

Again, welcome, and again, thx for your patience. Your response told me all I need to know about you as a person, and it's appreciated.

I appreciate all of this and no problem on the patience. But yes after a bit more research I've settled on the Pioneer, so your support of it just confirmed it even more. As for suspension I can tell my stock components are gone. The rake is worse than most and I can tell I need something new. After a bit more research the past two days I've come to conclusion that I'll be buying the Eibach Pro Stage 1 kit. I've seen a few pictures of the lift it brings and it's nearly exactly what I want. Plus the sale they have right now brings it down to $675, which you can't beat. I've read good stuff on the set and, it's Eibach, so you know it's good quality. Idk if you live in Kentucky or was just in the area, but I'm in KY as well, just south of Cincinnati. Thanks again man, and hope everything is alright.

Sounds like a great plan on the Eibach, especially at that price.

I live north of Atlanta but saw info on the 2018 KTTR and decided to do it on my way home from a road trip to Missouri. It was so good I drove up from home in 2019 and may do that again this year. Highly recommend it, especially since you're close. Here's a FB link.

We had to put our dog of 12 years down yesterday so that was tough. Definitely appreciate your well-wishes.

2005 SR5 RWD V6 Suspension

New subscriber (longtime reader) to the forums.

‘05 SR5 RWD 4.0.... Highway warrior and light towing duty.

I’m about to replace my OEM setup with KYB Excel-G shocks, MOOG springs, sway bar links and bushings, wheel well splash guard rubber, and respray undercoat.

I’m using the V8 springs up front hoping it reduces rake without completely leveling the truck.

Is there anything I’m “missing?” Any other common items that I should tackle? I just want to try to knock out as much as possible while I have it all apart without completely breaking the bank here.

The truck holds alignment as is and there’s no strange noises or noticeable issues with control arms, etc. I’m really just doing the job because of the sag and minor instability this thing has accumulated over 170k miles. Thanks for any info!!

Sounds like a good plan. If you can spring for some bilstein shocks I would highly recommend. The sway bar links and bushings made a big difference too in overall ride quality... didn't realize how old all this rubber was.

Thanks for the suggestion. It was actually just the nudge I needed. I’m gonna get the 4600’s and send the KYB’s back. Seems worth an extra $100.

The KYBs aren't bad... I have used them in the past on another SUV. But they are basically stock replacements... which again isnt bad. But the bilsteins are a solid upgrade and worth the money in my opinion.

Spacer lift.

I got 2004 4runner sport. 2 wheel drive.. I wanna get the rack look out. Will 1.5 inch spacer on the front and no spacer on the rear be OK? If there's pic of what I'm looking for send them also .

Use a 1/2 inch spacer up front, which will net 1 inch of lift. What most people do to level the 4th gen.

This picture is mine befire I lifted it more with a 1/2" spacer up front on 265/75r16 Falkens.

I just installed Bilstein 5100s in the front with stock coils, set on the third from the highest setting (installation guide from Bilstein said average lift gained from this setting was 2"). The truck sits pretty level now and I am wanting to get some bigger tires but want to know how big I can go without rubbing. Its an 08 Limited V6 and I will also be swapping my stock 18'' wheels out with a set of 5th gen 17s off of a 2016 SR5. I was planning on getting a set of 255/75R17 BFG KO2s, does anyone know if I will have any fitment issues with this?

most likely you will be okay

I got my 5100s sitting in a box. I can't decide if I should do 5100s/stock springs/notch #3 or do 5100s/OME 884s.

Is the extra $180 worth it or would it just be a firm truck? I don't plan on bumpers or winch ever.

Notching up the stock worn out coils with the 5100s made the ride too rough. New shocks and springs make it ride awesome!

I have this setup right now. Very happy with how it turned out.

OME 883 front
Wheeler T13 rear
Bilstein 5100s

Hub to fender 22" up front and 23.25" out back.

Sitting on the same 265/75r16 Falkens.

That looks really good. But wouldn't stock springs be softer than OME?

OME 883: 375mm in height, 590 pound spring rate
OME 884: 390mm in height 590 pound spring rate
OME 885: 395mm in height 590 pound spring rate
OME 886: 402mm in height 660 pound spring rate
OME 887: 400mm in height 590 pound spring rate
OME 888: 405 mm in height 590 pound spring rate

stock is... 580?

Just purchased the Eibach stage 1 prep truck lift kit. It doesn't come with rear springs and am looking to improve from the 155k mile original rear shocks. I've been reading fj could are quite popular, but what if I wanted an extra inch lift in the back. Or do those fj coils give it over the stock springs? Trying to figure out the best rear spring to swap in for the oem. The fronts can be adjusted up to 2.75" while the rear shocks are firm at 1". Would love some input from a newbie who just ordered his first mod. Thanks.

FWIW, the suspension post linked in my sig has a pic of FJ springs side-by-side with OEM springs. Scroll to the very bottom. In my case, the FJ springs added about .25” of height.
