4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Yikes, I had intended to go with 884s or 885s (have a metal front bumper, v6) and super flexes but this seems like an extreme amount of lift up front.

Did the OME spring specs change? I know a few members that have been running that setup without issue for years but everything recent is similar to your experience.

I am currently on 5100's all around with OME 884/895. Idk about 5 inches of lift in the front? Maybe he was still on 31" tires? I have the same settings as him, first notch recommended setting.

onto my next question, would you guys swap out the rear springs when upgrading fronts and rear shocks? I have 6112's and 5160's sitting here waiting to be installed. But I was wondering if I should upgrade rear springs as well? I don't mind the 895's. I only have a custom swing out in the back.

Just thought i'd let you know my experience with the 6112s.
If you are running 6112s with a V8 4th Gen, you might only get 2" lift depending on the spring with the 6112s. I had to swap my springs with the higher rated ones by Bilstein P/N 53-291387 B12 to get close to 3". I think 3" is the max for 3112 at least for the V8.

Thank you mike. I actually have the v6 so I hope it'll be alright. Should I swap the springs out still?

I can't guarantee anything but if you have V6 the max will be 3" per Bilstein spec sheet with 6112 with 600lbs springs. I had to swap my springs to 650lbs to attain 3". Hope that helps you. I added photo of mine with springs changed.

when you say clip 5, is that from the bottom or starting from the top?

Ah okay. This mine on 5100s on the lowest clip. I was just gonna either leave it on the lowest or the first clip when I install the 6112's.

Hi and nice ride and nice height with OMEs. I don't know if you are trying to lower height or same height as photo. I think you might need to use clip 5 minimum for about 2.5" lift per Bilstein Manual. If you have lowest clip setting it will only raise 1.38". Manual says V8 but I think it is similar to V6 depending if you have 600lbs or 650lbs coil spring.

Damn you got me thinking now. Yeah I lifted vehicle with OME springs. I was hoping to achieve this same height if not higher. The rear should be the same if I keep the rear OME 895.

No problem. I liked the 6112s for the 2.5 diameter body but didn't realize the lift height was as aggressive as i wanted for my V8. Just didn't want you remove/reassemble to adjust height since it takes about an hour to adjust clips. Didn't want you to go through the pain I went thru.

Maybe the 650lbs springs may raise your V6 similar to the OMEs but I really don't know. Now I have an extra set of 600lbs springs in the garage after replacement.

Hi and nice sliders as well. What brand are they and are they welded or bolt on?

Mike

They are actually done by the homie from Vista. Welded on. I just got my spare swingout done by him recently, hoping to go back to finish up the rear with a bash bar for the rear bumper. nickdeyatnight on IG.

mkrunnersd You still have those springs? I'm in SD and have some 6112 I bought used that am thinking of giving a shot. I have a lot of extra weight, so those might be helpful.

I also got my sliders from Nick!

Hi and I do have the springs if you are interested but they are the lower rated springs at 600lbs for the V6. I updated to the 650lbs. If you give me the part # painted on the spring I can confirm if mine are the same.

Here is my experience with the Old Man Emu front struts advertised as "Stock/Light Duty Kit 1.5"- 2" Lift," and replaced with Bilstein 5100s at the 0.85 height setting (second slot from bottom for the C-clip).

My 2005 4Runner was completely stock, and too low. I did not, and do not care about appearance, e.g., "leveling" or "rake." I am not into cosmetic buildups. I am not a poser. Rather, being in the wildland-travel business, function and reliability are what I care about, as my three 4Runners have work to do.

Stock, it had about 8 inches from the front crossmember to ground. That is inadequate for a vehicle that is actually used to travel wildland roads, IMO. It is the location that often impacts roadbed rocks and ledges. So that measurement -- not wheel hub to lower fender lip -- is the distance that matters.

After installation, I found that the OME kit's advertised specs (1.5-2 inches of lift) substantially understated the actual lift all-round. The OME kit (884 springs and OME shocks, with a trim spacer on the driver front to address the known Toyota driver-side lean) put the actual front clearance at ~14.5 inches from the front crossmember to ground.

I liked the OME kit's handling and ride. The off-road performance was greatly enhanced. I even liked the bold look.

However, the truck immediately began emitting a low, harmonic, rotational groan when cold. The sound disappeared when I switched into 4WD, and after the drivetrain had warmed up. I don't know why.

Also, the OME kit's excessive lift put the CV axles at a substantial angle, upward from the wheel inward. So the boots tore VERY prematurely. As I drive a great deal on unpaved roads, and ford streams from time to time, the axles had to be replaced many thousands of miles before they should have been. (Please don't suggest that I could have just replaced the boots or installed boots for steep axle angles, changed the upper control arms, or added a differential case drop kit ... I had no interest in seeing matters metastasize.)

Also, I've been told that the excessive lift damaged the upper ball joints on both sides, causing an annoying suspension squeak ... meaning they now have to be replaced ($400+).

The lift also caused a loss of about 3-4 mpg in fuel consumption (down to 16-ish), which I anticipated.

Clearly, the OME kit's excessive and inaccurately described lift -- well beyond what ARB and the retailer still advertise for a stock/light-duty 4th gen 4Runner -- was causing problems that probably would only get worse
I have contacted ARBUSA in regard to the OME 884 springs and this was their reply. Although I used Bilstein 5100's Byways did use the OME shocks (struts).

"We do not recommend pairing our springs with any other strut, only OME struts. Our advertised lift of 1-2" is only guaranteed with OME struts.

Also, it is also possible that the vehicle looks taller because the old stock springs sagged. Our advertised lift is based on a brand new vehicle."

Thanks,

Error codes from Bilsteins?

Reading all herein, and calling Bilstein/Kalifornia to ask if their 4600 and 5100 shock will work on my 04 4r XREAS, they say they will not warranty their shock on my truck, AND that I will get dash error codes after install if the XREAS hydraulic lines are not connected to anything.

:wow2:

Why then do or HOW are people within this forum installing these aftermarket shocks (Bilsteins, OMEs, etc.) on XREAS 4rs and not having these problems?

Ah that's all BS, error codes-NO. I just put in 5100's all around in my 2003 LTD(V8) with rears air suspension and removed the XREAS and it's fine. There is nothing electrically connected to the XREAS system, unless they made a big change between 03 and 04. Although I still think I liked the XREAS better for cornering and ride. I bought my 5100's from Bilstein Canada and they never said anything.

Its that time, my 03 is due for suspension change out due to failing struts. So, I will be changing both front and rear struts. I am running the daystar 2.5 kit. What do you guys recommend going? Looking for cheap but quality parts, the lowest I will be looking at is the duralast quick strut kit. But any and all recommendations are appreciated.

RE: Blistien 6100 front shock and clip position for a V6
I’m a bit confused, a well known trait for me. I’ve tried. Searching and reading this topic but don’t seem to find any specific answer....

Referring to The install documentation it says for the V6 to offset the clips to take into consideration the ‘factory sag’ yet when reading all these posts I’m not seeing any on the forum indicate that is how they did it. Only the specific clip position and the compensation plate.
Any advise?
Thanks!
