4wd is very loud, has a hard time going back to 2wd.

Oh, also forgot to ask about the second part of my OP...changing back to 2wd from 4hi. It didn't seem to want to go back. I'd tried everything, stop, rolling slowing (<5mph), and it didn't seem to want to change back to 2wd until I was making a uturn. What's up with that?

I already answered that for you, "Not a coincidence on the turn. I too learned if you engage/disengage just before a right turn, it would immediately engage/disengage. After a few months of weekly 10 mile use, it now engages/disengages at will going straight or whatever direction."

Sorry, forgot about your post. ok, so basically just using it more will loosen up the parts and allow them to engage as they should? Thanks for the help!

Use that 4wd

Yes - the owner's manual says to use it at least one a week for 10 miles. It may take several weeks/months but it will smooth out and engage/disengage in time, just keep the right hand turn idea in mind each time. Then in a few weeks try it straight ahead - engage it a couple hundred yards before the next right turn. I try to engage/disengage at relatively low speed (like a normal person would before a turn). Mine went thru a fluid change yet that made no difference, only regular use.


I forgot do you have an Base/SR5 or Limited? See the chart below why it matters. Luck buddy!

Awesome, thanks again for all your help. This may be a stupid question but does it have to be right hand turn? When I finally got it to engage before, I was turning left.

OK, so that's actually something that I've been trying to figure out...what trim level do I REALLY have? I have the SR5 badge on the back of the thing...however it has a sun roof, leather seats, and things that I didn't think could be had on a base/SR5 model. But then when I went to enter the VIN on the Toyota Owners website it says it's an SR5....so I guess that's what I have?
