4WD owners, is this normal?

Hey gents,

New 2015 SR5 owner here. I may be a little paranoid about maintenance issues since I upgraded from my 04 because the engine head gasket issues.

My truck has 90miles and I thought I would engage the 4x4 system to give a little break in time. Well I was turning into a parking spot and at full steering wheel deflection, the car basically felt like it immediately lost power or had the parking brake on. The vehicle came to full stop about halfway into the spot without my foot on the gas or brake. I realized that the car has the inability to coast at full deflection on the steering wheel in 4x4. Is this normal? I know for a fact this wasn't an issue on my 4th gen in 4wd.

SR5 doesn't have a center differential, generally its 4x4 shouldn't be used on pavement to avoid binding. Guessing that is what you felt? Its likely different than your last truck.

Sounds normal to me. Without the center lock engaged in your old '04 you were basically AWD. Hence why you didn't get that driveline bind.

Aww man. Are you guys telling me I shouldn't be using 4wd for everyday driving?

You can do whatever you want but do you really need to be in 4wd? Then you don't. If you are driving around on dry pavement I wouldn't recommend it 24 hours a day.....

I doesn't like 4WD on dry pavement unless you are going straight.
You may get away with that while it's wet otherwise.

Can't remember if it states similar in the manual, but anyway it's not a good practice on dry pavement!

That makes me very sad. And I'm 95% 2wd I just engage 4wd every now and then because th 4th gens transfer case had an issue with freezing if you didn't exercise it. I just like the option if it's raining or I go up to the snow. Or if I'm obviously doing off-roading . I wish I had done a little more research. Does the trail have a center dif?

Limited only and its full time 4wd, so use it in snow and exercise it in ways not on dry pavement. You can use it on dry pavement if you are only going straight...

Hi Simple,
A good time to actuate 4x4 would be on a gravel road, or somewhere where your driveline won't bind as you experienced. Dry pavement; not the best.
