5,000 mile 1st service experiences

i bought my 2010 TE with the free "2 year maintenance plan". bought my truck in at 5000 miles and was told toy now changed recom oil change interval to 10,000 miles. i insisted i still wanted the oil changed and the service manager decided to accept my coupon and approve the oil change. the next service due date/mileage label placed on my windshield was for 10,000 miles which i did bring it in; real test is when i bring it back at 15,000 miles!

how long did it take to receive your coupons? my dealer said they mail them out and i have yet to receive them...4 months later

I got mine in the mail about 3 weeks after my purchase. To tell you the truth at the dealership they didn't tear out the voucher from my booklet but rather they just had me in the system so i'm thinking you're covered despite not having them mailed out to you.

Got Our 5K Service Today (12/27/2010)

We had our 5K service today (12/27/2010) at Toy of Winter Haven (Florida). It took about an hour. Very quick and straight forward. I was forced to do some reading in the waiting area, which I have put off for a long time. No oil change. I did not ask for one. Our 4Runner has the 0W20 synthetic oil in it.

I don't think Toyota is trying to scheme as some have stated. I have noticed that all manufacturers are incrfeasing the intervals between oils changes. The acuras computer recommends when to change the oild and geez I have went over 8400 miles without an oil change. I think toyota should put this type of system on their vehilces. I'm not sure but I think it goes by the life of the oil. I use to get my oil changed at every 3,000 but everyone always said it was a waste due to the life of the oil but I still did it - lol.

I hate taking my vehicle to a service center because you could never find an honest and informative service center thats genuinely willing to help you. I hate them all with a passion, they just wanna rape you every-time you take your vehicle there even if its just a simple oil change. :frisky:

i have always changed my own oil (conventional/semi-syn) on all my previous cars and trucks @ 2500-3000 miles with the thinking that non-syn oil with all the chemical additives breakdown with temp over time and still look at it this way: dirty oil is dirty oil ;so 5000 miles with syn oil is ok, but i don't feel comfortable about 10,000 mile oil changes for my TE regardless of toyota's recommendations. i am assuming that other additives in the syn oil will also still breakdown in time ultimately, it's cheap insurance as all my originally bought new cars and trucks (Japanese, that is) lasted with hi mileage! TMOFWIW!

I did my 5K service done last week and I got a FREE oil change @ 4500 miles, :D. I'm also getting a free paint touch-up because some D!ck banged his door so hard on my 4R I have a minor dent and revealed the white primer underneath. For a change I love my dealership, well at least the service manager I deal with. She actually let me go into their service bays and talk to the tech that was working on my car.

Btw I got the free oil change was because of my issue with the engine stalling issue I experienced (THREAD Here).

Another piece of info I would like to add is that these long extended oil changes that is new to Toyota owners has been done for years. The tech I talked to came from working at MBenz dealerships and he said they've been doing the same for years now and is not new tech.

My experience was more or less positive. Manhattan Beach (CA) Toyota. I didn't purchase a maintenance agreement back in Feb when i bought my LE. I talked with the service guy for 10 minutes about what they were going to do, and watched him enter it in to the system. That's the trick to get what you want (obvious to most of us, but apparently not all). The guy agreed that a 10K change period in LA traffic isn't a risk worth taking. Full synthetic change, tire rotation and the inspection per the manual cited above. Took less than 2 hours (weekday morning). $114 (I think). Going back for my 10K in a week or two. Hope for the same positive experience.

The only problem I had was the tire pressure when i checked it a month later. 40 psi on the back tires and 36 psi on one front tire, 38 on the other. I guess the guy didn't know how to use a tire gauge. I'll make sure the service rep knows about this, as well as the lousy wash job with a dirty towel that swirled the paint a bit.....morons.

To add insult to injury after my less than pleasant experiences at the service dept, I got a "service overdue" notice from Toyota.:flipoff:

The 4R's were scheduled to have oil changes every 5k, but with the new oil they changed it to every 10k. They sent all us early buyers all new maintenance books/logs reflecting the changes. So, sure the 1st guy you talked to might have still had the old info in his head but when they put it into the system they saw it was not 'due' for an oil change for another 5k.

I had the same experience. On the back of the vouchers for the 2-year free maintenance it clearly states "Oil change at 10k). I too feel it was a waste of time but it was "free", so until the warranty expires I will continue to bring it in for the "free" stuff. Once the "free" stuff ends.......I'll take over the maintenance myself.

Took my 4R in and had the same experience as the others. They would not honor the 5K oil change coupon, and only rotated the tires. They cut me a deal on the oil change - $45, which I thought was reasonable. Also, they would not disable the seatbelt chime citing liability concerns. Has anynone figured out a way to do this as you could in previous model years?

5,000 Mile Maintenance (Jan 20, 2011)

Today I had my first experience with the Toyota Auto Care Prepaid Maintenance plan at the dealership.

Auto: 2010 4Runner TE
Dealership: Larry H. Miller Boulder Toyota
Services: Oil Change, Tire Rotation, Multi-Point Inspection, Change FOB settings.
Time: 7:30am to 10:00am (2.5 Hours)
Cost: $82.95
-Labor: $24.33
-[04152-YZZA5] Replaceable Element: $5.00
-[90430-12028] Gasket: $1.00
-[00279-0WQTE-01] 0W20 (6 Quarts @ $7.72 ea.): $46.32
-Misc. Shop Supplies for Repair: $1.95
-Sales Tax: $4.35

This is the first time in about 4 years that I paid for an oil change. On my old vehicle I changed the oil myself. I figure I will pay for this 2-3 times every other 5,000 during this 2 year maintenance plan and then start maintaining it myself.

I requested to have the FOB changed to have one button to unlock all doors and the quote was $51.00. They ended up not doing it since the tech wrote: "NOT AN OPTION ON DOOR LOCK/WIRELESS ECU".

Brought the vehicle for the 5K mile service. Since I recently installed Bilstein 5100 front (1.75" lift) rear (1.5" lift with spacers), and new wheels and tires, I asked that no tire rotation be done. I just wanted the inspection to ensure everything is in order.

The vehicle was ready in 20 mins.

When I got home, I noticed that a sticker was placed on the driver side next to the VIN stating the following:

"Caution: Load Carrying Capacity Reduced. Modifications to the vehicle has reduced the effective load by 51lbs"

I am all for full disclosure when I am ready to sell the vehicle. But does this show up as a negative in CarFax or something?

Does anyone else who lifted their vehicle had the sticker on their vehicle?

Dealership is Don Mcgill Toyota of Katy, TX

Interesting, wonder how they arrived at that? As far as CarFax goes....I dunno that he can run your vin and add that stuff to your vehicle report. I'm not sure but you never know. Most likely not.....but thats very interesting!! i have some mods and will be at the dealership on Sat for a small warranty repair, i wonder if they'll pull that on me?

I too got my 5k service done today. Took about 45mins. They didnt ask for my coupon, just input my vin and made me sign the receipt. I had just got back from a snowboarding trip so they also gave it a wash...score! I also asked if they could reprogram my fob to open the widows but they forgot. I didnt want to wait since I was in a rush. Next time I guess. Lastly I brought up the issue with the foggin headlights and they said they would have to run it by the GM/Sales Rep, who visits once a month, so I'm stuck waiting for them unless I drive to another dealer. We'll see...

I don't think it's the lift. Mine has the caution label too and I'm stock. Mine is for 30lbs. I bet yours is for the running boards or some such nonsense.

How would they even know that ? Thats BS !

I am going to try to make them do all recommended service at 5k . I maybe would like to have some of the things changed , but will have to look at manual again to see what all can be changed. I really didn't understand it the first time when I read it quickly.

We as 4R owners have to be proactive at the dealers since they don't know much or won't even do much . It seems if we go in there with the info then they cave in and do what they are told/supposed to do.

I will be going in for my 5k in about 700 miles. ( 2 weeks ) I am going to nit pick the on everything , since after that the lift will be going on and other stuff and I don't want them to blame stuff on the lift if I do it after . I do need a front end align since one of my tires is not wearing properly , but I will have someone else do it since the Toyota factory settings / specs are not good enough. My friend will do it after lift and get it perfect !!

When I took my 4th gen in I told them to do the prop shaft . As the manual said about driving in sandy and salty conditions it should be lubed at all oil changes. Well i drive in those conditions and the argued with me about doing it . One of the service writers even argued with me saying there was only 1 grease fitting there and I said BS there were 6 (or 7) I can't remember , but finally I told him I would make him a deal and if I was right he would pay for all my oil , lube , filters , rotation , ect for the day . Well then all of a sudden the story changed on their part . Why the hell do we have to go through that crap ?? All over just greasing the extra 6 zirks ....geez !!!!

Just be proactive and know what you need when you get there . It really helps to get it done right the first time.

Maybe they weigh the trucks and subtract any extra weight?
:jump:
I was thinking it might be wise to schedule for some sort of repair or warranty work rather than just saying you want the 5K service. That way you're more likely to get a real service tech as opposed to a oil change flunky.
