5,000 mile 1st service experiences

We just bought our first 4Runner yesterday and so far love it other than a few wierd options left off as standard and the nose dive (bilsteins maybe in the future). The truck is going back tomorrow to get some wetsanding/buffing done where the plastic was rubbing on the delivery truck.

Aside from that I'm suprised reading these responses. When I bought ours, the dealership said they want to see our truck back at around 1000 miles/30 days. At which point I'm pretty sure they said they will do an inspection and change the oil. In fact I remember him saying they change the oil because of all the metal shavings in it from the machining processes and being built.

After that they will only do it at the 10,000 miles limits.

Why is everyone still so hung up on the 80's concept of oil changes so often. It's been shown that the viscosity breakdown of oil at 3000 miles is minimal and engine technology has changed so much that shavings are a rarity these days in new engines.

This type of old school outdated information reminds of the same argument ppl had on the BMW forum arguing about the intervals. Hell on that forum, ppl were so blind to new technology that they were arguing they had iron shavings when the car has an aluminum block!

Not to argue with you as I feel you are spot on, but, don't most Aluminum block engines still have steel sleeves in the cylinders?

...and a steel crank, and steel connecting rods, and steel camshafts etc-
All of which are machined... Just sayin.

I always found it interesting how this "new technology" was introduced by BMW in one year across their entire lineup. BMW went from recommending the customer pay for and change their oil every 3000 miles to all of a sudden BMW now pays for maintenance and demands the oil change occur no sooner than every 15,000 miles. :shrug:

I changed my oil out at 5K and again at 10K. Plan on doing the recommended 10K interval this time. Will have a used oil analysis done and see what it says.
