5-Speed Swap Wiring Diagram

Hey everyone,

I was helping another forum member wire their 5-speed swap, and as a result I created a wiring diagram for them showing how to modify an existing electrical harness, so I figured I would share. This wiring diagram shows each of the wires of the Park/Neutral Safety Switch (from the automatic transmission), and their corresponding locations when swapping in a manual transmission (to include the clutch depress switch, clutch start cancel switch, clutch release switch, and reverse light switch). There already exists a diagram similar to this, but this one includes the clutch start cancel switch, and is more complete by showing the corresponding connectors, pin locations, and a wire color key.

For anyone attempting this swap and modifying their existing wiring harness, all you need to do is cut all the wires just before the Park/Neutral Safety Switch, cap the 4 un-used wires, and lead the remaining wires to the various switches, all shown in the diagram below. This shows everything to have your 4Runner work as if it came from the factory with a 5-speed.

Note: the connectors and wire colors in this diagram are for a 1999 5VZ, other model years or engine codes may be different. If you are attempting this swap, you should refer to the appropriate Electrical Wiring Diagram for details specific to your vehicle.

A few notes:

• If you only want your 4Runner to start and run after your swap, all you need to do is jump wires 5 & 6 on the Park/Neutral Safety Switch. Just cut the wires before the switch and tie them together to complete the circuit. Cruise control, clutch start safety, and reverse lights can all be wired later.
  
• This diagram has nothing to do with the ECU in your 4Runner. Whether you have an A/T ECU, or the M/T equivalent, you still have to either re-wire according to the diagram above or swap out your wiring harness. Your vehicle will operate the same regardless of whichever ECU you have (the only difference is the Check Engine Light an A/T ECU will throw for not receiving signals from the shift solenoids). If you want (or need) to get rid of your CEL, you must find the appropriate M/T ECU for your 4Runner. Model years 1998 through 2000 have a plug-and-play M/T equivalent ECU, and model years 2001 and 2002 have a plug-and-play M/T equivalent ECU only found in 2003 and 2004 Tacomas. For model years 1996 and 1997, there exists no plug-and-play ECU -- For these model years I suggest swapping the wiring harness (in which case this thread doesn't apply).
  
• The transfer case operates completely independently of the transmission. This means no special wiring is necessary to get a multi-mode transfer case, j-shift transfer case, or other transfer case type to work after a 5-speed swap, as long as that transfer case is the one you had before the swap and you are not swapping wiring harnesses. (I had a multi-mode transfer case before my 5-speed swap, and I still have it after my swap -- it operates without issue)

Thanks so much for posting this, even though it was posted months ago. After studying the wiring diagrams and this post it all came together for me how to get my truck started and reverse lights working after my 5 speed swap.


Any chance you know how to wire up the harness from my 98 Limited to the j-shift on my tranny so the 4WD lights on the dash work too?

I don't know the specifics of between those two transfer cases, I suggest looking at the EWD for your model year and compare the two. You should consider keeping your existing transfer case though, it'll make your swap a lot easier.

99 5spd manual swap

I have a donor vehicle 1997 4runner for my 1st attempt to swap my 99 auto for a manual. I noticed that the clutch disengauge start switch is only a 3 pin connector vs the excellent wiring diagram in this post. Can anyone enlighten me as to any change on wiring?

Everything shown in post #1 is for a 99 which will be different from a 97. I’m willing to bet 96-98 will be different from 99-00

Charlie [MENTION=139000]phattyduck[/MENTION] 4WD swapped his 99 using 97 donor parts (trans, TC, etc) and made it work with some electronics mods and re-wiring. He stayed automatic tho.

The starting circuit changed in 98 from 3 pin to 4 pin. I would just find a clutch disengage switch off of a 98 or later because the starting circuit for your 99 will need it. The clutch cancel switch on the dash should be the same

I think i follow now. Is it the switch that activates when the clutch pedal is up? Any differences on wiring the 97 dash 3 pin?
From what im seeing online is this switch called the pedal position switch?

The two switches on the clutch pedal extremes serve different functions but allow the ECU to identify the position of the clutch pedal

Primarily, the upper switch will disable cruise control, while the lower switch will enable the starter relay. The lower switch pedal can be bypassed with the clutch start switch, I believe my 99 is a 3-pin, it may be a four pin.

Just trying to revive an old project truck and pick up where an old "mechanic" left off.

For some reason I can't find the "diagram" ... I converted my 2002 4Runner to Manual and now need to do the wiring to not get the CEL.
Can someone tell me where to find the subject wiring diagram.

Not sure you are going to find a diagram for a 2002. Most people who have swapped a 2001/2002 find a manual Tacoma ECU from 2001-2004. It should plug right in. Then you would need to put in the clutch start/cancel switches if you want it like factory
