5spd swap on my 97 limited need help!

So I have started my 5spd swap on my 97 4runner. I did alot of research but obviously not enough. I'm using parts of a 99 sr5 with the j shift tcase. I plan on using the manual ecu and engine harness.

I have already swapped the whole engine harness. All that is left is figure out how to plug my wire holes I drilled were the clutch goes. And mount the 5spd tranny and tcase.

The problem I am having is I'm missing plugs to go into the ecu and looks like one plug doesn't fit looks like a dash plug. My question is does anyone have wiring diagrams for a 97 Ltd and a 99 Sr5 manual? I am either going to have to repin the harness or pull the dash harness from my donor truck I still have. Anyone have any thoughts?

The dash harness is different. Meaning different pin. So yes, you will have to rein your dash harness. Most likely, you will need to buy a new connector that goes into the ECU from your dash. And repin your dash to that new connector.

If you go to my build thread, I have the repin chart of 97 4Runner. That will give you the dash connector pinout. I do not have however a 99 one. You'll need to get it from TIS it's like $15 for two days.

They sell connectors, just the connectors to the ECU and you can repin it your self. It will be a pain in the ass as the dash harness is short. Forget about swapping dash harness !

It's like few wires. Most of them you won't use. Because I believe it has to do with AUTO

Thanks for the response I have read your thread many times, I guess I'm just having trouble understanding the electrical stuff. I have the plugs from the donor truck still so I can take that but looks like I'll need to take 2?E12 and E14 and two plugs from my auto harness? Correct?

What you need is the four plugs off the donor vehicle E12 and E-14 and the two plugs over the glovebox. The auto engine harness for the 97 has three pugs that go into the ecu and two that go over the glovebox. The other plug for the ecu comes out of the dash harness. Because you have 5 plugs on the 99 ecu things just got way more complicated, unless you have four plugs from the 99 manual engine harness that go into the ecu. It is still possible to do this but the first thing you are going to need is all the plugs that go into the ecu and the matching plugs for over the glove box

Okay I'll take a look at it again and find all the plugs. I don't think I need e11 as that's the alarm neither vehicle had it. The donor vehicle only has 2 plugs above the glove box where my limited has 3...

Now switching the idea here. What if I maned up and swapped dash harnesses. Would everything be gravy train or would I still be rewiring. Would swapping the dash harness affect anything the Ltd has and 99 doesn't?

SR5 = manual AC, Limited = auto AC. Don't swap dash harnesses unless you want to swap all the AC equipment too.

If I was doing this... I would probably try to find a '97 manual trans ECU. You should be able to run the '97 auto harness, for the most part with a little re-pinning and a couple connectors changed out (reverse light switch, etc.). Keep your multi-mode transfer case (wait, '97 didn't have multimode... right?).

There are LOTS of differences between a '97 harness and a '99 harness, especially when going from an SR5 to a Limited.

Now, i don't remember exactly which connector is the dash connector. What you need to do, is locate a wiring diagram of 99. Then you need to read and print out the ECU wiring pinout, and the pictures of the plugs that go into the ECU. I Think its 4 plugs. 1 of the plugs is the harness plug. Then you need to do the same for 97. I dont remember but I think in my build thread there is pics of the actual 97 plugs. Check out my repin chart, thats how you swap pins over to another connector. Theres even a link i shared on how to do so.

You need to make sure that you transfer 97 dash harness pins to the 99 plug. It will most likely be same wire colors, but in different location.

Since you have the old harness, you can use that as a reference on the pin location

Here is a pic of my 97 auto SR5 engine harness as it comes through the firewall. Are you sure you have three plugs over the glove box? That would mean the limited would have a totally different wiring harness than the other models

Okay so got home today removed the clutch line and looked at the plugs. Looks like the 99 sr5 has two harness plugs? E12 AND E14. Attached picture. And picture of 99 ecu pins. And picture of sr5 above glove box. Notice it only has one and the limited has 3

I know limiteds and sr5 are different but the only thing the sr5 doesn't have that the limited does is the sunroof. As long as the sunroof and rear locker works and I don't have a check engine light I'm happy. Both have AC power everything. The sr5 has heated side mirrors mine doesn't.

Yup definitely want to avoid it. I can live with some functions not working but want to attempt to have it all work first

In a 97 there's 4 plugs that go into the ECU. 3 plugs are easily pulled out through the firewall. The other 4th stays inside behind the glove box.
Which is the dash harness plug. That's the plug you need to repin.

The other plugs, shouldn't matter. As in that huge white one, black one.....

Again. Can I see a pick of the 99 ECU and the plugs of that harness please.

im guessing your 99 ecu has 5 plugs vs the 4 that i have.

One of the plugs you simply might not even use.....

you see the plug/hanress that has that big plastic wire loom over it? looks like it comes from under the dash? you still have that in your 97. Thats the plug you need to repin to the proper 99 plug. All you need to do is, make sure its same functions

I just personally bought a 2 days pass for $15 at TIS to personally compare the plugs and EWD for you. I'm locked out lol. Might take few days.
