5spd swap on my 97 limited need help!

So, to my understanding from looking at the EWD of 97 and 99. In the 97, plug E12-H has these functions:

B+ (pin 22H) W-L = 16E W-L (= for 99)
BATT (pin 14H) B-W = 1E L-R
BK (pin 25H) G-W = ?
4WD (pin 26H) G-B = 18D B-L
SDL (pin 12H) W = ?
ACT (pin 5H) L-B = 13D L-B
AC1 (pin 20H) L-Y = 25D L-Y
SP1 (pin 12H) G-O = 22D G-O

( * do not get used by a manual ECU )

*TFN (pin 17H) R-G
*L (pin 3H) LG
*2 (pin 2H) V-R
*R (pin 1) R-Y
*OD1 (pin 7H) BR-Y
*OD2 (pin 6H) L-O
*OIL-W (pin 4H) Y
*PWR (pin 10) G-R

I was only able to locate these fallowing functions on the 99 EWD:
B+
BATT
4WD
ACT
AC1
SP1

The following i was not able to locate:
BK
SDL

So im not really sure what to tell you... also i dont know if you know. 96-97 auto ecu and manual ecu have different plugs. 98-02 have same plugs between auto ecu and manual ecu, thus 99-02 is plug and play.

(please do not use mine, and look over everything on your own, not responsible for anything)

what i noticed is this.....

on TIS website and the information they give you. Both 97 and 99 have 3 pages of the actual ECU stuff.

On the 97, function BK is 1st page, 3rd function. Now this function is no where to be found in a 99.

Now if you open the same stuff for 99. 1st page, 3rd function. It is labeled as STP. Now function STP is no where to be found on 97 EWD.

Function SDL on 97 is 3rd page, 5th function. This function is no where to be found in a 99.

Now if you open the same stuff for 99. 3rd page, 5th function is labeled as SIL. SIL is no where to be found on 97 EWD.

So maybe, and i am strongly believing that function BK on 97 is renamed function STP for 99.

And function SDL on 97 is renamed function SIL.

Another reason why i believe this, is the schematics match identically

Which would fill in those last 2 pins to complete your dash repin.

(You could go ahead and try to repin it, labeling everything extra carefully. In case it wont start, you can repin it back.)

so to fill in those 2 blanks on my post above,

function BK on 97 harness is E12H (pin 14H) G-W
Thus, maybe it is function STP on 99 (15E) G-W

Function SDL on 97 harness E12H (pin 12H) W
Thus, maybe it is function STL (11E) W

(on 99, plug E is E14)
(on 99, plug D is E12 BLACK)

Maybe TheDurk can help us out, and confirm this. He is very good with EWD

Wow did you just repin the whole thing for me?

Yes my ecu is 5 plugs I don't going E11 is used. As I don't see the plug anywhere on the 99 dash nor engine harness. Here's a picture of my ecu shit... I'll take another. I have 3 pages of wiring charts from alldata I was just trying to compare them. Sorry for the late reply I was re sealing the tranny and putting the flywheel, pressure plate and release bearing on. I found I need new retainer clips and a new pivot ball so waiting on that before install.

I'll also do the charting to see if mine compares to yours thanks for all the help!

So what you are saying is essentially I'm taking those 7 wires from the 97 limited harness plug and splitting it up into the two plugs on the 99 harness plugs Im going to cut out of the 99 dash. And leave the rest of the wires unplugged and don't plug anything into the two empty plugs I have ontop of my glove box?

It looks like your charts matching mine but what I see is plugs E12 and E14 for the 99ecu are calling for more wires.

OXS - E12-8
HTS- E12-9
NSW- E12-20
W- E14-6
TPC- E14-9
PTNK- E14-17

Where would these come from. They look like wires that would be in the first two plugs on the 97 auto engine harness... Soooo confused

Okay here are better pictures.

First one is the 99 manual ecu
2nd one is the two plugs coming from the 99 manual engine harness that plug into the 99ecu
3rd one is the plug I have to repin to the two dash harness plugs from the 99 manual
4th is a plug from the engine harness going to the glove box (plugs in fine)

@koleIt do you have PayPal or accept etransfers? I'll definitely reimburse you for paying to get EWDs as you absolutely did not have to. Thank you very much for helping me. What site are you getting the diagrams off of by the way? I called Toyota and they said they'll look for the diagrams for me but they haven't called me back.

When repining to my 97 manual ecu, there where three wires that ran to the auto dash plug but were supposed to be in the manual ecu. If you unwrap the tape back around a foot on the engine harness plugs that go to the dash, you will see that these wires dont go all the way through, but loop back to the ecu. It took me a couple days to wrap my head around how to do mine, so I think you are doing good. Thanks kolelt for your help. I still feel you can get this to run with the 99 ecu.

I hope so. Just waiting on the rest of the tranny parts. Today I'll be doing the clutch pedal clutch lines and centre console hole. Did you you just patch the hole since there will be about 2inches exposed?

Create a 2-day account and go for it! Just download everything you might possibly think you will need.

I have a digital '97 EWD, but my '99 diagram is paper... I much prefer the paper version, but luckily that's the one that matches my truck. I got the '97 when I was doing the 4WD swap on my truck.

I saw I was mentioned upthread. I'm a little busy and we've got a snowstorm on the way so I'm a little busy. I'll take a look tonight and see if I can help. My '99 is also paper as that is my truck so I am in the same boat as Charlie.

I have the Toyota diagrams and all data diagrams. I'm going to compare them all today and hope I have the right diagrams and comparing them right. Thanks for all the input and help guys hoping to turn key this weekend but it the parts aren't in I'm sol

This is what I think you need to do. You still currently have the 97 4runner dash harness? Right? So you still have the E12(H) plug. Take that plug, label all the wires, and repin those wires to 99 4runner plugs: E12(D) BLACK and E14(E).

This should basically make the 99 ecu accept your 97 dash harness.

Like i said before. There are two issues as i am not 100% sure. Functions BK and SDL on 97 4runner are no where to be found on 99 4runner ECU. But here is why i think BK and SDL are the same functions as STP and SIL on 99.

Now, let me ask you. Are the big huge plug on 97 ( the one like behind the glove box) the same as the 99? And if i remember correctly, isnt there a small plug next to the big one on the 97?
TheDurk could maybe confirm that function BK and SDL on 97 is the same as STP and SIL on 99.

And if so, id label everything, and try to repin it and hook it up. So yes, you would have 2 plugs, the rest of the pins on the 97 can just stay where they at. As that plug E12(H) wont go anywhere. I would not cut any wires nor from 97 and nor from the 99 harness. Just unlock the plug, and pull the pins out. Again, label everything, and tripple check it. And do one pin at a time. So if anything you can go back, backtrack your self. So in theory, i think you just need to repin one plug.

Here is a little story from experience on why labeling everything and checking everything over more then once is very important. Especially on a harness, because there are so many wires and some are same color. That is why it is important to repin one at a time. Anyways, my case is different then yours. I repined my auto harness to manual ECU rather then swapping the engine harness. So... i have everything labeled. Just finished repining the auto harness to manual ECU. Plugged the manual ECU, go to crank it over. NOTHING! Freaked out.... went back and reppined the plugs BACK TO AUTO PLUGS lol. I then again, plug back the old AUTO ecu and go to crank it over. NOTHING!!!! Now im really freaking out. Im looking over everything. Remembered that I unplugged the alarm brains. Plug the alarm brains back, and try to start the truck. BOOM it starts. Which means that I reppined it back to the same way it was before successfully lol. Then again, reppined the harness back to manual and was good hahaha.

I actually had to cut out a little more of the shift lever hole to get the manual and J-shift to fit. The manual cover went completely over the hole. Remember that you are going to either have to ground the starting circuit wire or run it over to the clutch to get it to start

Dude, that's a thing of beauty. I couldn't have done any more as far as marrying those function codes. I would have just done the exact same thing. Then, to remove all doubt, trace where they go. BK and STP both end up at the stop-light switch, so good there. And SIL and SDL both end up at the OBDII connector, but then it gets weird. '97 goes to Pin 2 and '99 goes to pin 7. I have no idea why. It won't make any difference to the running of the engine, but could mess up any OBDII reading. So I would say if there is a problem, then repin that white wire on the OBDII connector to match the ECU. That said, I have no where near the skills to put up that diagram you did. Nice.

As far as that big plug behind the glove box, I assume that is the II3 connector: Engine Wire to Cowl Wire, a 24-pin 4-row job with a bail lock. According to my EWDs, they are physically identical '97 to '99 and should plug up, physically. I can't vouch that the individual wires marry. If I were doing it, I would put the two together, and note any color differences on the same pin. Then go back to the EWDs and see if it's a color change on the same function or a real issue.

That's sort of a pain because you have to guess what circuits are involved and then look them up. I don't know any easy way to do it.

On the II3 connecter over the glovebox from 97 auto to 97 manual the the wires in common were in the same place and the same color. The extra wires are mostly for the auto transmission functions. Toyota seemed pretty consistent with this plug , but you will still have to check each one

Wires on the II3 connector (and the smaller one with it) were in different places between '97 and '99. I had to put different ends on a few wires to get them in the right places on my '99 truck using harness parts from a '97. It should be do-able, since he has an extra '97 harness now. And yes, some of the colors changed between those years. You will have to check each function.

Charlie, did you have an issue with the OBDII connector? That one intrigues me as I don't understand it.

EDIT: I did a little research. Pin 2 is for ECUs that use the J1850 protocol. Pin 7 is for those which use ISO 9141-2. I can only conclude that Toyota switched protocols between '97 and '99. Can anyone confirm that? I know my '99 always detects as ISO. If so, more wires than just Pin 2 to Pin 7 might have to be adjusted. Something might have to happen to 10 and 15.

Here are the functions by pin for the OBDII.

Pin Signal Description
2 J1850 Bus+
4 CGND GND
5 SGND GND
6 CAN High J-2284
7 ISO 9141-2 K-LINE Tx/Rx
10 J1850 Bus-
14 CAN Low J-2284
15 ISO 9141-2 L-LINE Tx/Rx
16 +12v Battery power

So i think, since OP swapped engine harness but kept his 97 dash harness. That he will only need to repin one plug. And if he fallows my repin chart (After doing one himself, not taking responsibility, and please do not cut wires) then i think everything will perfectly.

Now, what is this II3 plug your talking on a 99? Im looking at the EWD and i dont see a plug labeled II3? There are only I1 , I2, I3...
