5th Gen 4Runner Lift Buyers Guide

I am looking at the OME BP-51 setup but I believe this lift only gives you 2" all the way around. I was looking to keep a little rake (want 3" in the rear and near 3" in the front) so was considering a 1" rear spacer and .5 or .75 suspension spacers added into the mix. I've never used suspension spacers so I don't know what to expect with them. Do they change the dynamics of the suspension i.e. harsher ride, different pre-load setting using them, etc?

Also not sure if 3" rear and 2.75" up front will give me too much rake? I'm assuming 3 all the way around will still maintain factory rake.

I have a 2016 Trail with KDSS. I've already put on sliders and a Gobi rack. I also want to replace the skids with something sturdier, and add a steel bumper. So I'm looking at quite a bit of added weight, which I'm sure will require beefing up the suspension. A small lift would be nice too -- nothing huge, maybe 1.5" to 2". I don't care about leveling it, the factory rake is fine since I sometimes will be hauling heavy loads in the back.

What would you suggest as far as shocks and/or springs?

So I'm new to the 4Runner world but have always had lifted trucks. All I can find are either custom tall lifts or bolt on 3"... Are there no options bigger than 3" ????

I would actually suggest you read several of the stickied Build and adventure threads to see what people are doing. I'm not crowing on or promoting just my own setup. Check out several setups and see what looks like it will fit your proposed needs.

3" is pretty much the limit on IFS without having to do a sub-frame drop kit.

I would actually suggest you read several of the stickied Build and adventure threads to see what people are doing. I'm not crowing on or promoting just my own setup. Check out several setups and see what looks like it will fit your proposed needs.

Any threads in particular you recommend? I'm a long way off from replacing my XREAS, but it gives me something to read during conference calls. I also think I'd like a "modest" lift (just to get more clearance), but I'm not entirely sure what that setup looks like.

Sorry, no. They are broken down by color and year though, so you should be able to find something similar to yours that will give you decent ideas. The builds at that link are only added if those members request [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] to add them. He just started that thread when he assumed moderator duties earlier this year. The newer members may not be aware of this. Some like myself provide a link to our build threads in our signature. But not everyone does this.

It has also been encouraged that those who make build threads keep their first post edited with lists of parts and pictures as they go for a quick reference.

I've been reading a ton of build threads. My plan was to build a better suspension that would out perform a TRD Pro. I originally wanted the Pro but decided on TEP to save $5-8k.

I was set on getting the Bilstein 6112/5160 set up which is close to/even better than the TRD Pro. Now, I'm moving towards getting either Icons/Fox/Radflo coilovers with matching shocks in the rear.

I mainly want to level the truck. Can anyone tell me that if I am crazy to use coilovers to level my truck?

After adding 120lbs metal bumper up front I lost like 1/2" and doing BMC this Thursday. I'm looking into upgrading front suspension to a 3" lift . Can I use spacers and or Toytec/eibach springs setup on my 5100 shocks?

Yes. I went with OME 885's and reset my 5100's to 0 to offset the extra ~130 pounds from my bumper and winch. If you want 3" you would need the additional spacer. The OME springs only give you 2".

I have the Toytec/Eilbach on 5100's. You can do it for sure.

I might be wrong, but I don't think factory 4R shocks will like 3" longer springs. Aftermarket shocks are made to allow for more length of spring.

Has anyone tried or have experience with Dobinson Suspension? They seem to be made in Australia and similar to the OME kits, but they offer 2" of lift instead of 3". This seems like a better option for what I am looking for and may be able to aligned without new upper control arms?

The front spring are pretty much the same rating as the OME Medium kit (~580lb/in stock?, 590 OME 2884, 585 Dobinson C59-300) and rears seem like a good compromise between stock and OME heavy (180lb/in stock?, 260lb/in OME 2889, 220lb/in Dobinson C59-325).

The kit comes with gas charged shocks as well and they do offer heavier springs.

Personally, I like the stock ride, a tad bit stiffer and more controlled is ok with me. I like the rake, I am not looking to eliminate it as I like the vehicle to sit flat when loaded/towing, not sagging.

I had an OME kit on my prior LC80 and really liked the way it sat and rode, albeit just a touch firm.

Just curious, but the kit seems very temping (other than the spring color ).

Why don't you do what I did and get a 2" OME kit? 883/895E provided 2" of lift, maintained factory rake and rides much better overall (stiffer for sure, but better). Might as well go with what you have experience with.

I did get Camburg Balljoint UCA's just to be safe, but according to others you don't NEED them.

I like that idea as well. I've read about using the 895E in the rear to level the stance, I missed the 883 front though. Thanks for the info.

I see you are running that setup, do you have any pictures of how it sits? Are you happy with the UCAs? Any noise or negatives with them?

I've only had the lift on for less than a week but so far I'm thrilled with it. UCA's are great, I got 3.5 degrees of caster dialed in no problem and they don't make a sound. Like I said I got 2" all around and at worst I'll have a level truck or still a little rake when I load it up with camping gear/dog.
