Any updates to this? I also recently picked up a Tacoma steering wheel, but it seems to have the extra buttons for lane departure and forward collision. I am trying to wire to a 04 4runner Sport. I tried rewiring to match the similar colors as the OEM wires, but when I plugged it up no controls worked.

I got my 3rd gen Taco steering wheel installed finally. The wiring really is not difficult, you just have to check resistance to find out which wires control what buttons and the buttons are grouped together like Seek, Volume and Mode have the same control wire. Horn wire is the same, cruise wires are the same (4runner had black, red, white and Tacoma had black and red), button controls are grey and brown in both cars, ground for the buttons is either black or white (my 4runner button ground was white, Tacoma was black), illumination wire may be different (4runner was white/red stripe, Tacoma was all red). I had the hardest time de-pinning the connectors, I ended up trashing the first one since I couldn't figure out how the pins came out. Had to go to the junkyard and pick up some more. Other than that, it definitely feels better than the stock wheel and looks 1,000 times better. Sucks the airbag is still expensive! I paid $300 for mine off ebay

Here is the chart I referenced to figure out what wires controlled what buttons. It shows you in the diagram which wires are what too, I had to make sure so I did the resistance check myself since Toyota doesn’t have a dedicated wiring diagram for steering wheel controls. Use the same reference to figure out which wires control what buttons on the Tacoma wheel. Then it’s just hooking up the other wires

This thread has been SO helpful in my recent upgrade, I also got the same leather wrap, stitching that thing on was a pain, but now that I know how, it would be much easier, but I think I would pay an upholster shop to install it in the future.

So I ended up getting a 2013 4runner wheel and the plug on that wheel is white and not compatible with my 2006 4runner limited (black plug). For the life of me I could not de pin the white plug that came on the 2013 wheel so I ended up just cutting the plug from my original 2006 wheel and soldering and shrink wrapping in the correct wires.

Luckily the cruise control is already on the original plug and compatible with the 2013's cruise control module.


The only wires I needed to connect were the

1.) Power (Red on my 2006 wheel) and red with white stripe on the 2013 wheel.
2.) EAU from the diagrams above (White on both wheels and directly adjacent to the Grey and Brown Wire)
3.) Grey Wire on both wheels
4.) Brown Wire on both wheels.

Nothing goes into the green, yellow or black ground to the black plug from the 2006 wheel from the 2013 wheel, so I just heat shrinked them up.

Hope this is helpful to anyone that gets a 5th gen 4runner wheel with the white plug instead the black plug.

Initial impression is that both wheels area about the same diameter, but the 5th gen one especially with the Leather wrap is thicker and feels much nicer in hand. Also the 5th gen wheel just looks so much nicer. Def worth the $400-500 IMO as this is the primary interface to the vehicle. Would 100% do it again.

I just finished installing the steering wheel from a 2016 tacoma into my 2006 4runner and I couldn't be happier! It looks much more up to date and with some work I made everything work. I will try to include as much info as possible.

My first step was to wrap the wheel that I bought with a oem like leather wrap. It has a contrast stitching that I did to match the seats. That overall took about an hour and a half. It turned out great and looks really good too.

My next order of business was to wire the new steering wheel controls to work with the existing clock spring as well as the factory cruise control. My controls had 4 wires, a red, a brown, a grey, and a black. the brown grey and black go in the exact same place as the factory steering wheel controls. The red pin has to be put in the lower left opening. (this is for the lights) The cruise control consisted of three wires. a black red and white with black stripe. Pull these pins from the existing plug and put them in the same place of the new plug. The black wire is tied in with the black wire from the steering wheel controls. The horn wire (blue) needs to be de-pinned and places in the top right plug. Now all of the steering wheel controls and cruise control will work (test everything)

Next disconnect the battery for at least 10 minutes before the next step. dont want the airbag blowing up

next the nut holding the steering wheel on will need to be removed. First disconnect the airbag connectors. There are 2 tabs that need to be lifted up for the airbag to come out. Next make sure the steering wheel is locked it makes removing the nut much easier. Next leave it on part of the way because you will need to give the wheel several good tugs to get it loose (don't want to take your teeth out) . once it is loose you can remove it as long as it is perfectly straight.

next remove the old wheel and put the new wheel on. retighten the nut. next take the old cruise control module from the old wheel and feed it through from the inside of the wheel to screw in place. the connector can then be plugged in.

Once the steering wheel is fully in place now is time for the most stressful part. take the new airbag and plug the black wire into the black connector and the orange in the orange connector. also dont forget about the horn wire. Once you tighten down the torx screws from behind, the battery can be reconnected. Once connected let the car sit for a minute before turning it on to ensure the airbag will be okay.

The final step is to turn on your car and enjoy your new steering wheel! All functions work properly including blutooth controls. The airbag is also recognized by the car which means no airbag lights.

I hope this helps anyone who would like to do this swap. Also any exposed wired I soldered and did heat shrink tubing for protection

Looks amazing, and I plan on this mod no matter what here. My issue ATM is due to a monitor, I cannot disconnect the battery for 10 minutes. Can I disconnect and manual drain for the same effect?
