Quick question here, couldn't find a thread about it in the "5th gen DIY thread", and found only 4th gen and earlier DIY's.

Anyone has done a black headlight mod on a 5th gen? As a pair of smoked trail lights will run about 400$, I would first try to do this, but a DIY specific to 5th gen lights would greatly help!

And the most important thing, is that I don't even know if it's feasible

Are you talking about just blacking out a set of sr5/limited headlamps to look like trails?

Thanks for the link. At first glance, the reflector contour (part that you paint for the black healight mod on anterior generation) is missing. Gonna to look at my headlight to make sure.

Its not shown in the thread, but that piece falls (not shown because he was probably doing the same thing) out when you unbolt all that stuff on the back. I've done a set of retros before, just never installed them on my rig, I also did the black headlight mod while I was in there. You can knock all that out in a few hours, hardest part was prying the headlamps apart.

I happen to have a headlight open right now. Yes the mod is as easy to do as on any other vehicle. Take out about 10 screws and anything else you can from the back of the housing. Heat oven to 350, turn oven off, put headlight in for 10 minutes. Take out and pry apart. Once the headlight is open you have this (mine is already black)

Remove three screws holding the chrome piece in so you can remove and paint it. Reverse the process to put the light back together.

adio3x, did you sand down the chrome before painting the part? My guess is that it is not needed if using a paint made for plastics, since it's in an enclosure, and an alcohol cleaning would be enough.

Jesse, thanks for the pictures, that helps a ton. That is my next project, I hope I can do it next weekend.

What did you guys use to replace the adhesive that holds the transparent lens to the rear assembly? I would use silicone for outdoor use..?

I use this to seal it back together. use it like play-doh and make thin pieces to put back in the channels. once it's all back together I go around the entire outside with clear window/door silicone.
