5th Gen Calipers

Did the rears today-didn't go as well as I had hoped. The fittings on the steel lines were fused to the brake hoses so I didn't get to change the hoses today. Going to price the OEM steel lines and if they're not too expensive I'll use those when I inevitably break the lines on the truck. Then there's the @!%!^%@^!&&@(!&( parking brake. Old rotors slid right off and new ones slid on without hanging up on the shoes yet the passenger side was grabbing to the point of turning my nice new rotor blue while driving. I completely removed the shoes out of frustration since I couldn't find the adjustment hole in the backing plate in the dark. The parking brake didn't work well before the upgrade so I'll pick up new parts for that too.

Aside of that, the truck stops great! Both old calipers were seized and the passenger side was metal on metal so I hand nowhere to go but up.

When the weather warms up I promise ill do a video on the parking brake.

I have a reoccurring problem, just wondering if it is the seized issue or not.

After a sudden or emergency stop, my brakes experience decreased capacity...as if I have to push the pedal to or beyond where it was pushed during the quick stop to get any braking at all.........then after a 30-60 seconds things return to normal

Scary as hell during congested highway situations if I run up on it too fast

Where are you guys getting your 5th gen calipers if you don't mind me asking? Every local parts shop I called either can't get or don't have any info on front calipers, only rears.

Only place I've found to carry fronts is Rockauto so far.

Rockauto. Look at the 2010 4runner section I remember when I was ordering them for some reason the 2015 only had one of the calipers available which was odd since they are the same for all 5th gen years.

For those asking about pads, I went with Akebono and after about 10k miles am very happy with them. They are a little more expensive than some of the others but are some of the highest quality non-oem pads available. I picked them up off Amazon.

This sounds more like the brake assist pump, which others have been having issues with. Have you had any lights?

I think I figured out the issue. First, I was looking for a hole in the backing plate to adjust the shoes, rather than going through the front. Second, the aftermarket shoes were made incorrectly-the linings were too thick. I had someone install a set I supplied over the summer and they weren't able to get them to adjust properly. You could adjust them to hold when the parking brake was applied but they would drag when it wasn't.

I had to remove them from the drivers side yesterday as well because they were dragging too. I tried to adjust them but the adjuster was cranked all the way in to the lowest possible setting. I will be ordering OEM shoes and new hardware, hopefully that will fix the issue once and for all.

Anyone else notice that this pin seems to be missing a seal/cap? On my 4th gen caliper, both pins were sealed at the back. I'm wondering if this is going to cause this pin to seize once dirt and water inevitably get in there.

mine were missing, but it was left in the box. so i just pushed it in. Definitely don't go without it. if you dont have it call centric see if they can ship it to you, or tell rock auto its incomplete.

Thanks thats a hell of a lot of potential life and death information ! No lights or audible alarms yet, but I will have to listen to the buzz and see how often mine cycles, that type of wear could really be possible with my intown driving style...scarry!

call up rock auto maybe centric first and tell them. maybe they can get it to you asap

Just look up a guide pin boot kit. They are only a few bucks and will come with that plug.

Phil - your brakes are looking good. I wish I wouldve painted mine before hand. I thought the silver finish on the calipers wouldve held up but after 3 weeks, I already have a bunch of surface rust on them. Ill probably do what you did and do them 1 by 1 and knock that out.

I have to do this upgrade as well and was wondering if anyone has the part numbers for the 5th gen rotors for the fronts and the 4th gen rotors for the rear.

RockAuto does not have one of the front calipers in stock right now, so I have to wait till they stock them before I order everything.

What is the size difference in the calipers? Are we gonna be able to fit 16'' wheels or only 17''?

Obviously you didn't read the post at all, literally on the first page somebody asked the same question. It's probably been asked multiple times afterwards too. 17"+ wheels required. You're welcome.
