5th Gen Extended PIDs for Torque App

Just so everyone knows the app OBD Fusion has a Toyota upgrade that can display the trans temps and engine oil Temp. No coding needed.

Bummer. Grab a cheap, used, Android phone or tablet and just use it.

Haha. Literally just got the iPad to do that. Went the iPad route since everything I own is Apple and I can transfer all of the apps like Gaia between the devices

Heh. I hear there is a 12 step program available for Apple withdrawal.

Already have.

I don't recall the cost of the app, but the Toyota specific extension I think was another $10.

So I've had the OBD Fusion app for a few weeks now and have been using it instead of the Torque app. It's nice, I like the level of customization for the displays.

The engine oil temp setting doesn't seem to work properly though, mine seems to read transmission temperature instead of engine oil temperature. The gauge always reads within 2 degrees of the transmission pan temperature. After driving for 6 hours last weekend, the temperature never went above 160F, too cool for engine oil temp.

Anyone else have this issue?

I got the torque/android method working. Really simple to setup based on the OPs directions.

That sounds like the trans temps to me. The engine coolant stays right 185 i believe and doesn't really move around.

Surprised you are having trouble, everything is working in my torque app.

To my knowledge, nobody has figured out the PID for oil temp on Toyotas. They're just giving you some generic PID that might work for other vehicles and ends up being trans pan temp on your 4Runner.

Bump. I followed the OP instructions and am pleased to report I have my Android/Torque Pro working. Transmission temp was my goal and now I have converter and pan temp. Pretty cool App. Looking forward to seeing the difference between 4LO and 4Hi for torque converter temp.:hatsoff:

full list of PIDs

Has anyone documented the full list of PIDs of a 5th gen? I'm trying to find a misfire. Dealer says it may be cyl #2 but it's not happening often enough to post a code. I'm going to use TORQUE Pro to see if I can find it.

Finally got my, uh our, umm, my wife's 2014 4runner in. First order of business was to hook up my OBDLink Scan Tool, Torque app and run Torque Scan to see if I got any results. Unlike our other two cars ('06 Accord/'06 Impreza) which gave 0 results, the 4Runner returned a cornucopia of PIDs.

I spend some trying learing how to interpret Torque Scan's responses, but didn't get too far. This link helped quite a bit though. I then remembered the Prius guys over at priuschat have a massive lift of PIDs they've already decoded and reverse engineered formulas for. Took their Gen III (2010+) Torque PID list and cross referenced it with the results received from the 4Runner to see which PIDs are the same between the Gen III Prius and 5th Gen 4Runner.

I've attached a zipped CSV that can be pulled into as a predefined set in Torque. To do so (shamelessly stolen from priuschat):

----------
Copy the CSV file to Android SD card (could be internal memory)

First, you need the paid version of Torque app. Simply unzip the CSV file in ".torque/extendedpids" folder on your micro SD card. Keep in mind that ".torque" folder is hidden so set your explorer to show the hidden folders. If you don't see the folder, create it.

Import Custom PIDs

In Torque main screen, press Menu -> Settings -> Manage extra PIDs/Sensors -> Menu -> Add predefined set.

Display Custom PIDs

From the main menu (rotatable items), choose the Realtime Information. From there, you can add those custom PIDs that you imported. Just touch and hold the empty spot and a menu will come up.
-----------

The Gen III Prius have 312 unique PIDs they've decoded. I've been through 103 of them and so far have 43 (or so) that work for our 5th Gens.

I'm guessing most of these PIDS are Toyota-wide and can be used on any ~2010 Toyota vehicle.

4th Gen 4Runners should be able to parse the Gen2 Prius PIDs and use those.

02/22/2014 - Screwed up my knee a while back. Haven't been able to continue PID validation/extraction. Should be able to make some progress in a few more weeks.

JeremyB will these work on the ODB MX+ app as well or are they specific for Torque?

OBDLink? I took a quick look. It appears they use the same structure as Torque. I know Scangauge uses a wonky structure that has to be translated to use in Torque.
There appears to be a way to import a list of PIDs into OBDLink. Would make it easy as long as the source file was configured properly.

Yes ODBLink. Ill have to play around with it and see if it will import. thanks for the reply

Stability of the data

I just installed Torque Pro and used the PIDs from the 1st post. I have OBDLink MX+ adapter paired to Torque
At first glance it worked great, but then I mentioned a "glitch" of some kind.
My RPMs for example are showing stable (needle) and seems reliable, Coolant Temperature acts the same way, but Transmission and Converter Temperatures are jumping Up and Down (the needle goes up to 96 C but then goes down to -46 C) and this roller coaster happening like every 1-2 seconds.
I have ScanGauge II in parallel and it stable showing 96 C.
Same Up/Down behavior is happening with Battery V.
Any idea of what causing it and how this can be fixed?
