5th Gen Gas Tank Capacity and Range

I've had my '11 LE for two months now. I bought it new as a dealer left over for a screaming deal.

The car came with a full tank of gas and the range show +400 miles. After filling up my first and second tanks of gas the range was 379 and 368.

Since then after each fill the range doesn't get over 339. What is even more strange the 4runner has a 23gal tank- I've driven the the range down to under 20miles and even 0 and I couldn't fill the tank with more than 19 gallons (and no this had nothing to do with the gas cost going over a certain amount set by the station).

Is this happening to anyone else? Any suggestions?

Maybe the computer just needed time to set up. If it had never been driven it probably came from the factory preset at 400 then once it learned the car and the tank it set itself accordingly. I just had to install a new computer in my 2000 and it did kind of the same thing until it re-learned the runner. Also I have a 2000 so this info may be way off but I've driven my runner 50 miles with the gas light on and went to fill up and got 15 gallons in even though its a 19 gallon tank. I think Toyota may just set up the tanks to have a lot of reserve so that your less likely to get stranded. Just my .02 hope its useful.

When I fill the tank full of gas, up to the neck, I get 440-453 miles per tank. Yes, that is a combination of city driving in Florida. I have yet to experiment with highway miles(Interstate only). I'm happy with that...

It keeps on calculating all the time for averages and will stay fairly constant after 5-6 fill ups. If you disconnect your neg post on your battery for 10 seconds it resets the computer and starts all over again. I think it starts at 420 miles or something around there and pretty sure it's based on 20 gallons even though we have a 23 gallon tank. For example mine averages around 335-340 and I get about 16.5 -17mpg.
So when you hit 0 it has 2-3 gallons left.
My 4th Gen was the same way.

Every time I've topped mine off the range reads 410. My mpg has been just north of 20, on average.

I'm getting range around 340 miles too. Range depends on driving speed, wind and terrain. If you drive on flat roads at about 55 mph for few fillups your range will be around 400 miles. Another sweet spot I noticed is about 75 mph, but it's hard to maintain this speed sometimes : ) And range it conservative - I bet you can drive few dozen miles when computer shows 0 range. I guess it's set this way to minimize road assistance calls and save fuel pump.

You guys must drive with some dainty feet. 2010 TE all stock no towing, Falken Wild Peak tires stock size, 20,000 miles. 15.4 mpg 50-50 mix city / freeway freeway average 80mph (this is So Cal average traffic flow 85 plus). Price Club / Costco regular blend gas :flipoff:

I've had my '12 TE for several months now and when I brought it home the computer said I had approx. 400 miles till empty. I filled up at about a half tank remaining so didn't get to see what the range really was. Since then it has been averaging about 320 miles on fill up, per the computer. The last fill-up was with 4 miles showing till empty on the computer and I was able to get 20.1 gallons in it. I didn't know the actual capacity was 23 gallons.

I've got a 3" OME lift and 285 KM2's, so I only see around 12.5 MPG round town and maybe 17 MPG when pure highway.

I very rarely get above a 300 mile range unless I change to a higher octane level when filling up. She slurps up the gas....:boink:

Some of you guys are getting horrendous mileage. Is it because you do mostly city driving, have a lead foot, too much added weight, lifts, or tires?

In town pretty consistant @ 19.2. Yes, I do drive gently. Always in 4th below 40. I shut the engine off for long waits (rare).

Experimenting on the hwy @ 62, flat, no wind, I get 24.5. Wind and/or hills knock off 2 mpg. @ 70, I usually get 21 mpg. Strong headwinds have quite an effect I've noticed, and it's fairly flat here.

I have been surprised how poor my mileage has been. I can only assume the biggest contributor is the tires. The lift and tires were installed by the dealer before delivery, so I never drove the vehicle in stock form. I traded a lifted F150 FX4 that got about the same mileage. I run the tires at 45 psi, which noticeably helps with rolling resistance. The KM2s are not exactly optimized for street use. I also suspect the stock gearing combined with the taller tires puts the engine into a sub-optimum rpm/torque range. On the highway, the slightest incline causes a downshift.

17.4 on two tanks since drive off of dealer lot - with mostly in town errands sucking it down, and freeway stints bringing it up a bit. About where I'd expect it.

I just did the math on a little trip I took for work.

From Modesto CA to Santa Rosa CA and back with some driving around in town while I was there, came out to: 316 miles took 16.3 gallons of gas = 19.39 MPG

I drive 16 miles to work every day most of it freeway, flat road and I average 22 MPG at a steady 65 MPH. If it's windy it drops to about 20 or 21MPG

Just came back from 1000 miles round trip and after the last gas station computer shows 390 miles range. On my way back most of the time I was doing 70 mph so I guess if I drove longer I might have had over 400 miles range. Running Duratrack at 36 psi, no roof rack but have magnetic CB antenna.

We did a Big Bend (Texas) trip two weeks ago, traveled 1520 miles, averaged 71 MPH, including all the slow time in the park, and the average MPG was 18.9; we ran 85 - 90 on much of the highway. I noticed when the fuel light came on and I filled up it only took on a little over 19 gallons. In over two years with my 4RT I've never noticed a range function in the computer; in fact, I didn't even know it existed until this thread; learn something new every day. Heading to Maine in a couple of weeks for some Down East camping, pulling my A/T Chaser this time; that will put a dent in the fuel econ and I won't be running as fast. As an aside, even though my 4RT was pretty quiet, several months ago I installed dynamat throughout and it's really quiet in the cabin, even at the higher speeds. Anyway, when I return from the Maine trip at the end of the month I'll let you know how the fuel econ turned out.
How’d I miss that range function?
