5th Gen Oil Recommendation? New Owner!

10,000 mixed city (~75%) and highway (~25%) miles. Quaker State Ultimate Durability is about twice as expensive as Walmart SuperTech and about half as expensive as Amsoil Signature Series. SuperTech is branded to Walmart by the lowest bidder, so I choose to not buy it. What's the thermal breakdown temperature of SuperTech? I don't know. QSUD oil costs me about 0.4 cents per mile. Gasoline costs about 15 cents a mile. I choose not to buy Amsoil, which is the most expensive and arguably the absolute best oil. QSUD is a high quality (or very high quality) oil at a midway price point which makes it my preferred choice.

SuperTech is actually a pretty decent oil especially for the price. It's not bottled by the lowest bigger, it is and always has been bottled by Warren Distribution, same company that bottles Amazon brand oil. Well known 90+ year old company so they must be doing something right. Not saying I care to run it in my 4Runner but I would absolutely run it in an older vehicle that I care less about.

I’ve been using M1 Extended Performance since. 7500-10,000 mile intervals depending on my driving conditions. No measurable oil use at all between changes. Today I switched to M1 EP High Mileage so we will see what that does for me.

I’m really surprised how good that used oil filter looks, does it show any sign of deterioration? Any noticeable areas of failure?

No, why would it? Have you seen reports of filter failures in these motors?
It is a little darker than the filter I took out at 2039 miles.

I'm on my 6th oil and filter change and the Toyota Filter has come out Immaculate each time.....no swarf in the pleats and no distortion in shape, and no sediment in the reservoir either. These are durable and well machined engines.

Thank you for that, I just got my 4R a few weeks ago and trying to learn as much as possible. Never owned a Toyota ever in my life. Everyone says the same thing on the Toyota oil filter. Glad it holds up!

Check out Project Farm on youtube. He does some very cool stuff in general but also does a lot of oil testing. Nothing "scientific" I suppose but it's a good watch either way. He tested a lot of oils and most beat M1 by a long shot including Amazon oil and SuperTech oil. Amsoil came out on top in the end. I would love to see a test between Amsoil and Toyota oil. I sent him a message requesting that so we'll see!

I've been using M1EP for the last 40k, yesterday I went back to TGMO because I was able to get it from the dealer for $6.06/qt (I bought 14 qts). I've also used Rotella gas truck, pennzoil Platinum, regular M1, and M1 advanced fuel economy with no issues whatsoever. I buy the filters 5 at a time, usually from Camelback Toyota or someone who has a good deal going. I change my oil every 5K and never had any issue with the plastic filter housing, maybe because I torque it correctly to 18lbs and put the oring in the right slot. I'm at 183,000 miles. I also reccomend checking the PCV valve every once in a while, mine was gummed up at around 140k.

183k miles on a mix of different oil manufacturers is good positive reinforcement. I like the 5k oil change interval also, thanks for the feedback.

I was using mobil 1 0W-20 advanced fuel economy and not very pleased. I was going to switch to Mobil 1 0W-20 extended performance but my Toyota dealer was able to sell me OEM Toyota synthetic 0W-20 for $5.49 per quart so I went that route. I believe some of the new synthetic oil formulations like Penzoil Platinum are made from natural gas.

Got it set to engine oil temperature, transmission pan temperature, transmission torque converter temperature, coolant temperature, air intake and battery voltage. All monitored in real time. It’s a Bluetooth device and also works as a scan tool for checking and clearing codes. Connect to your phone for on the go monitoring.

WInter is coming so dont mistake cooler oil temp averages as "better" oil

I felt the Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy did not keep the engine smooth. The extended performance may be better. I also noticed the oil was very black at the change interval compared to the OEM toyota. Again this may just be the Advanced Fuel Economy formulation and may be better on the Extended Performance which I was going to try next. May also need to take into consideration the heat in South Florida.

makes sense.. it's Mobil 1's thinnest oil. Try Toyota's synthetic if you want smooth. I've used extended performance and couldnt feel or tell a difference between Extended and Advance Fuel economy.

The SM formula was over 600, the SN is around 100.

Does anyone know of any other brand oil on the market that has a Moly content as aggressive as Toyota oil? Just bought 12 quarts at $100 which is way more than any other oil on the shelf at my local parts store but I pay it because I feel I'm getting a better product. If there is an alternative, I am all ears.
