5th Gen Swaybar upgrade from ADDCO

SR5 Cornering

Thanks epjfsa....

I believe the shorter sidewall w/ 20" wheels would reduce sidewall roll in the corners, I push it till' they squeal. As you mentioned, decent tires will help.

I've installed air bags on coil spring trucks before, using separate lines to each bag and holding pressure constant between each side acts as a "buffer" against body roll. Will also serve well if towing "heavy".

Your input on alignment is well founded, it appears a considerable amount of folks have benefit from a positive caster front end alignment.

I may be silly trying to get a 4runner to handle like a unibody car, but man I wanted a full frame mid-SUV.

Just about to retire my 1991 2-door, 2-wheel drive S-15 Jimmy. Did the aftermarket sway bars, poly bushings. Hugged the corners like it was on rails. Drove it today because of road salt, 317,xxx miles and purrs.

Here's to my first yota.

You might consider swapping OEM shocks and struts for some Bilstein 5100 series. I did on my 2018 TRD OR and there was a noticeable stiffening.

Also, the struts (front) are height adjustable so can level out the truck if desired.

I hear ya and don't think it's silly. I'm sure you understood that handling is a compromise that you may have to live with, and nothing wrong with trying to improve it. KDSS is just about the only reason I decided that the other compromises with BOF were worth it.

I think you're right about the 20" wheels. The stiffer sidewalls probably do have a larger impact on handling at the speeds you'll take corners in a 4runner than the unsprung mass does. I think I would suggest considering 18" and run at a higher tire pressure to maintain ride quality.

That said, I'm hearing really good things about the newest round of redesigned unibody SUVs and pickups and new AWD systems. Since the 4runner holds its value well, you'll probably reach a point where it's worth more than you owe on it. Lets face it, many people on this forum would be perfectly well served by one of the more-capable unibody SUVs - we just like knowing that the next level of capability is there.

Bbermann & Epjfsa

I'm in agreement with your input and truly appreciate the POSITIVE (critique) responses.

Not trying to teach a frog to fly, but trying to optimize what important to me, as you understand.

New front shocks (struts) & 20" wheels first. A limited model (w/ KDSS) would have been the better choice for (my) street use, but man I've been hesitant to go with 4wd at all, thus part time SR5. I've had (3) SUV's and (2) full sized trucks, all 2wd and drove them all up to or past 200k.

Thank you Gentlemen.

I know this is a very old thread, but wanted to keep topic open.

I've got a new 2018 SR5 (did not want full time 4wd)

It is a daily highway driver and will log 500 miles per weekend on the interstate going back and forth to the lake. Off road will be limited to the gravel road leading to boat dock and a slippery boat ramp. 4-Wheel drive likely only used on slippery ramps. Also intended is infrequent light towing, less than 3000 lbs.

I'm interested in mods to improve on-pavement driving and cornering on curvy Ozark roads and flat interstate.

Considering:

* Aftermarket sway bars / bushings (Any input on vendors???)
* 4Runner limited 20" wheels w/ touring tires
* Air bags for rear (minimum pressure most times)

I'd like to hear your input on how to make our 5th gens corner better. :frog:

I've contacted ADDCO and received the following answer to my 2/12/19 inquiry of aftermarket sway bars, " We only have the rear bar at this time.... Part#2301 (0.875") - John".

Thanks!

Whiteline poly sway bar bushings front and rear, big improvement for under $50.

:lookout:
