5th Gen T4R TEP 15' - hood shakes - vibrates

have owned two previous T4R (97' and 04') first time in life purchased a new T4R (2015 Trail Premium) loving everything, except the spot behind the hood on the windshield side vibrates up and down at speeds exceeding 50mph and because I got a black 4Runner it is extremely visible. Brought to attention of dealership and they said they have heard other complains, but nothing from Toyota as far as TSB yet. I tried dynamat on the inside of the hood - no success. Don't want to go as far as 3m film on hood as some have suggested. From the inside it looks like the flexible foam that Toyota used (in short supply) between the support struts and the hood are very flexible and that there are not enough supports and not in key locations. Anyone here have any successful alternate solutions or know of how this can be pushed up the priority list at Toyota? Disappointing that a known issue gets no TSB to get this fixed. Thank you.

It can be unnerving but it is normal, I rarely notice it driving around Denver even on the highway. When I drove out to NC last week it was very noticeable, maybe it's just that there wasn't much else to look at across kansas though...
 
It's not bad on the highway, it is a tad annoying at first. It's terrible when going over washboard roads, and the hood is like, "hold on we're going on a rodeo!"
 
thanks for the prompt reply. I guess my concern is more that this is the most expensive vehicle I've ever owned, plan to keep for a long time and I am worried over time stress cracks in the paint - wife drives 12' FJ and no shaking - her hood is wider of course.

I'm at 70k miles with no problems, chips in the paint at the front of the hood from rocks are more of an issue!
 
That makes me feel much better knowing that. Appreciate the info. Agreed, I am in the Utah side of the Rockies and have already touched up a few rock spots. Not sure how it is on yours, but for black - toyota got creative (3 Toyota touch up bottles needed) so black base touch up, then metallic specs in clear, then clear coat) impossible to get it flat. Such is life. Cheers.
 
I agree with the op. This is the first vehicle I ever owned with a vibrating hood. It is kind of annoying and makes the 4runeer feel like a cheaper vehicle.

This has been covered many a times. If you want it to be more solid then weight increases. If you want better fuel economy and whatnot then the weight has to be removed from somewhere.

In the end it's not a Land Rover...at the same time it's a hell of a lot more reliable then a Rover.

I would give up 10 lbs. in weight to not have the hood shake.
 
I noticed the hood shake much more on my 11' SR5 than the 15' TRD. I'm assuming its due to the added weight and rigidity of the hood scoop but who knows :confused:

The 4Runner's price is just a bit above what the average people paid in 2014 of around 35k. Go price a pickup truck!
 
You haven't seen a hood shake 'til you've ridden a '62 421 Catalina with an aluminum hood at full throttle... AMAZING!
 
I almost never notice this in my 2012 SR5. When I do it is only very slight. Wondering if the pro's have it worse due to the scoop maybe?
 
Very common to see our hoods "flex or vibrate" under free way speeds. The front of my car is wrapped in 3M since I'm really anal about chips and still flexes. At the end of the day its a truck and I just learned to live with it.
 
The hood will flex less if you limit the amount of air that can get under it from the gap in the front over the grill...
