The TPMS system is federal law, and is written in such a way that all manufacturers have to integrate their chosen technology in a way that it cannot be disabled. Not saying it can't be "hacked" to disable, but you risk other problems perhaps. The thing I find most egregious, is the $100ºº or so cost of the sensor when the batteries go dead.
 
most independent tire shops will clone 5 TPMS for ~ $100. amazon sells a set of qyt4 autel programmable 315Mhz tpms ~ $119.

i prefer to be safe with TPMS on all my wheels :wave:
 
Why would you want to disable it? Just so the light wouldn't be on when you're aired down? I'd rather have the safety of knowing if a tire is low while daily driving vs. not dealing with the light during the rare circumstance I'm aired down. The TPMS light has alerted to me to nails in my tires a number of times that would have otherwise taken me much longer to notice.
 
If you buy the TIS Techstream from Amazon ($100) then you can program your own TPMS sensors and not have to worry about the light, you can even adjust the psi that turns on the light, set it to 5psi and never have the light go on again!

It's a dumb system that doesn't tell you which tire is involved or what the pressure is, or if there is just fault with the system.

GMs and other cars will give you pressure readouts for each tire in real time (are they super accurate, no, but close enough).

I agree it's dumb that it doesn't tell you which tire it is, but it still alerts you to address the issue.

This is completely off topic, but back when I was considering replacing the head unit that's why I was interested in iDatalink Maestro. In addition to integrating the steering wheel controls and all that, you can use it to access vehicle diagnostic data like oil temp/pressure and also the individual tire pressures from the tpms system. Hopefully this will be addressed in the next 4Runner, since my friend has a TRDP Tacoma and the HUD in the instrument cluster is full color and will show tire pressure among many other things.
 
How did I drive the last 40 years in a vehicle with no more than power steering and brakes as the only safety features and live to tell.......it's a Miracle, I tells Ya!:pray2:
 
I was going to de-solder the LED for the light, but just ended up putting a small piece of gorilla tape over it instead. I installed aftermarket sensors that use a different frequency and also display each tire's pressure and temperature.
 
I was able to disconnect tps light

Had a 04 4 Runner and after the tire sensors went bad I was able to disconnect the dash light. This was in one of the other forums. Not sure if it will work with the 5 gen. Write-up: How to Disable (Bypass) the TPMS
This can be done in 5-10 minutes. All you need is a wire connector that can directly connect two wires. What I used was a Scotchlok wire connector (see the first picture below). Here is how:

Steps (on my '04 4Runner):

Disconnect the battery (Although I did not do this)
Take out the screw that holds the black plastic panel located below the glove box
Gently pull the black panel and it should just pop out
Drop the panel and you will see that the TPMS module is right there
Unplug the harness (as show in the second picture below)
Use utility knife or scissors and cut the yellow type open (BE CAREFUL-Not to cut the wires!!!!)
Inside the yellow type there is another layer of black type, cut that open as well (again, BE CAREFUL Not to cut the wires!!!)
Now, look for two wires: the Pink-Black one (TPMS) and the White-Black (ground) wire (see below the third picture)
Use Scotchlok wire connector to connect the Pink-Black wire and the White-Black wire (watch youtube Scotchlok Wiring Demo clip here: ScotchLok Wiring Connector Demonstration - etrailer.com - YouTube) NOTE: Check both channels inside the connector. If one channel is blocked, you need to cut out the plastic block to make adjustment so that the wire can go through just like the other channel).

Done! The TPMS light is now bypassed and the light will never come back on. (Note: this mod is reversable by simply removing the connector or wire a switch to turn it on or off: see TPMS light bypass switch)

Since the TPMS is disabled, be sure to check your tire pressure regularly.
 
What does Jeremy556's post suggest then? I seemed to have forgotten to quote his comment in my original question. My apologies.
I replaced my Toyota TPMS system with an aftermarket one. If you search Amazon for Careud U912 you should find it. It comes with the TPMS sensors that must be installed in each tire and the receiver, which fits a standard Toyota switch blank, which displays pressure and temperature for each TPMS sensor.

I am not endorsing this system, as I have not had it very long, and the TPMS valves don't flow nearly as much air as stock Toyota ones do. I remove my valve cores to air down quickly, and these take at least twice as long, maybe more.
