5th generation Trail edition traction control problem.

Still no resolution.

Went back to the dealership today and drove with the master technician, he explained the system should kick like this when cornering at moderate speed if the system senses slip. This still does not explain why it happens at 30-35 MPH when going up hill around steep corners at low speed. Still waiting on a response from Toyota engineering. Frustrated.......:nono:
 
i think its best you make a video of this. to some it maybe normal and to others that are not familiar with the system may think something is wrong.

also a picture of the truck if you can
 
Over sensitive VSC.

Video links to show this issue in action. The VSC can be heard engaging also you can see the steering wheel shake. All this happens between 35 and 40 MPH while cornering. Mild non agressive cornering I might add!!!

My Traction control has kicked in and surprised me as well. Not a good feeling! Took it to the dealership for half a day and they found nothing. What bothered me was they had no record in the computer that it even activated when it had twice. They told me to bring it back if it did it again. yeah ...thanks!

So does the dealership have a used one that you could take on test drive and see if this is unique to your 4runner or if they all do this on that stretch of road. Just a thought.
 
Wow, surprising. Show the video to the dealer, call corporate, share the YouTube links with them. You have video proof of the issue (showing you are not driving it like an indy car either). Might get their attention.

I've never had my VSC system activate other than on snow/ice/dirt. I have taken some corners way to fast and sharp and it ignores them, like it should.

Sometimes technology is great, other times it can be a real PIA!
 
VSC sensitive/beep.

I am not sure if it is supposed to beep when the VSC kicks in however mine does not and never has. The dealership has been very helpful, they have replaced the yaw rate sensor and performed a couple of zero point calibrations however as you can see from the video I posted its still far far too sensitive and the issue/fault/design fault persists. They have checked the onboard computer and there is no record of an issue and the diagnostics show no fault. I am not sure what my next course of action is moving forward.:nono:

This place you videoed is the only physical place you have driven it where you have had this issue? If so then you probably need to test drive another one down that same exact set of curves. If it was doing it in other places intermittently or constantly then you have a bad component. If it is only doing it in that one exact area then I don't have a clue except drive another one down that same stretch and see if it does that too. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
 
The location in the video is the stretch of road that high lights the issue in both up hill and down hill directions, it also happens to be the road my girlfriend drives the kids to school on daily in this vehicle!!! ( SHE IS SCARED TO DRIVE IT) The vehicle will have the same issue intermitantly in other locations as well. This road is 100 miles from the dealership making your suggestion impracrical all be it a good idea. As far as component replacement the yaw rate sensor has been replaced. You will note in the video there are a few other sharper corners that I navigate at a higher speed with no VSC activation? There appears to be a sweet spot to make the issue occur between 35 and 40 MPH.

Last thing then I will back out:
Any chance that particular stretch has lots of dust on the road next to the shoulder? I mean more than usual. I say this because when I had my 2011 SR5 I could take it off road and be on dirt and small rocks and gravel going up and down hills with not a wimper out of the VSC. Several times though (maybe 1 out of every 30 trips) I could get it to activate on a stretch of curvy blacktop going to a MTB trailhead. I paid close attention to the road in those spots and the shoulder was dirt and even grade with the road. Over time between rains the dirt and dust would gather in those turns and I guess my rear wheel would spin a little at about 30-35 mph causing the VSC to activate. It happend so little though that I didn't pay it much attention.

As you say it's intermittent but maybe there is a pattern there. Just a thought.
 
For information purposes, what is the posted speed limit for the road traveled on where you recorded the videos?

What PSI are the tires?

While some of those corners look a bit sharp (based on your steering input), and your speed a bit high, the video does not truly reflect the conditions.
 
All bets are off on any kind of gravel or slick spot. But those vid's looked like good dry road to me.
 
Perameters

The tire pressures are spot on.
The road is dry as a bone with no sand or gravel.
We are well within speed limits for the road section.
In essence we are plodding down the road at a very safe speed for the conditions and VSC will actuate unprovoked.
The vehicle has been back to the dealership 3 times and spent at least a week at the dealership maintenance shop. All the obvious bases have been covered.
You can haul ass around much worse sharper curves and nothing happens and yet when you try to do it between 35 and 40 MPH the VSC kicks in.
 
Stupid question. You know you can turn off TRAC and VSC right?
Hold the VSC button down for 3 seconds while stationary.

Yes sir. It turns itself back on after several miles. Also why should I have to drive with such a feature turned off? Toyota should fix this issue....The whole point in having the VSC is for safety, at present its a Danger feature.

OK, my last shot:
If you had an intermittent faulty wheel sensor or a problem with the mount that could do it I think. The wheel sensors are what communicates via PWM signal to the VSC to report rotation.
