6 X 9 Kickers Went in Today

Ordered the KCS 6x9s from Crutchfield a few weeks ago and installed them today. Man what a difference. The original speakers were so flimsy and cheap, it was embarrassing.

I was always an Infnity fan, but based on the Crutchfield fitment guide, the Kickers were the best fit. I am very, very pleased with them.

I pulled the rear door panels off tonight and pulled the speakers out, again flimsey as the front. Pulled the paper internals out and did a dimensional analysis, looks like 6.5s will fit. So I called Crutchfield and ordered Kicker CS 6.5s. Will be in Thursday, so will have for the weekend.

Installed sound deadner behind the speakers along with a foam enclosure. The speakers did not fit the adapter plates shipped with speakers, so I had to do some drilling.

Other than that, the installation was very easy. 1 hour on the drivers side, 20 minutes on the passenger. 5 minutes to get the rear door panel off.

Test run was some Paul Hardcastle, PH 3, man what a sound. Then threw in some Dire Straits, fantastic...finished off with some Steely Dan, Aja...

I wanted to take some pictures, but was working to beat the rain.

So glad when anyone puts in the work in (and the $$), and is completely satisfied with the end result! ...And I totally agree; Toyota's audio system choices for our gen five 4Runners are extremely poor and shameful... my wife's '04 Camery is equipped with the stock eight speaker JBL sound system, w/separate power amp, and with all the work that did to my '12 Limited's sound system (non JBL) http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/210591-alpine-1-dash-component-review.html, her system still sounds far, far better than mine as far as SQ goes!

...finished off with some Steely Dan, Aja...

PS: I'll assume you just for forgot to mention: Deacon Blue, Peg, and Black Cow hahaha! Oh, and let's not forget "Ricky don't lose that number!" ...I love "Steely Dan!" :music:

Another one to jam out with, Donald Fagan's The Nightfly! Turn it up and play New Frontier! That was my track to show off speakers on the sound board in my old shop! With a nice, tight sub, this track hits HARD!

Actually, i mentioned Aja, the album...Black Cow is the best song that SD ever laid down. I am 57 and grew up when music was music...Eagles, Pink Floyd, Allman Brothers, Fleetwood, Doobies...you know, the good stuff

Do you have the JBL system?

No I do not, the standard that comes with the TP and Navigation...

Like I said in the OP, after I finished the front doors, I had the rear doors off, both of them apart and the speakers out in 10 minutes total. This is easy. Interesting thing, with the rear door speakers removed, the tail doors do not work.

Also, in the speaker harness on the rear doors, there seems to be a second set of wires that are terminated in what looks like a clear plastic tube, possibly for a tweeter set up? With the factory JBLs?

I took all four speakers I have removed, pulled the cheap paper internals out, cleaned the frames and now I can see what GoJayBee did with his mods, these plastic frames are a good foundation for installing wood inserts and then going with a smaller speaker, possibly a higher end speaker.

I am planning to work the inserts, I am thinking of running some solid oak thru my planer to 1/4 to 3/8" thick and inserting in the plastic front speaker surround/support. Not for my install, but to see how it comes out.

The rear tail doors looks to be a challenge for the size, these will be worked last.
